sup guys

ive got a 1981 Toyota Hilux 4WD, i replaced the rear axle seal today. old axle came out with next to no effort, after changing the seal the axle wouldnt go back in. threw a flashlight in there, some plate with RN stamped on it is blocking half of the spline hole in the bottom like the picture.

it looks like the axle is supposed to go through that plate but it doesnt line up at all and the plate doesnt move, it doesnt match anything on my Haynes book for the rear axle. anyone know wtf it is? i dont want to have to take the whole bloody rear axle apart now. thanks

Did you only pull one axle out or both at the same time?
The spider probably fell out of place, try sticking something in there and moving it back into place.

Just pull the other axle and pull the centre. There is something there that's not meant to be there. From memory, some Toyotas had a weird oil baffle or something up the axle tubes, looks like this has become dislodged.

only the right rear was leaking so i only pulled it, i tried sticking a bar to move that plate but its stationary. which makes no sense since the axle literally slid out when i removed it

im actually an automotive mechanic myself, the truck doesnt run because it needs a new carb so im doing this in my driveway instead of work. ive just never seen something dislodge in a diff like this

bleh i knew it would come to that, might just have to rip it all apart. thanks for the info guys, might be an oil baffle. i'll just pull the other axle and the center this week
