If you run winter tires year round, even the studless ones, they generally get to whining if you don't rotate them every couple thousand miles. A wheel bearing noise disappears in that whine.

Never heard my first wheel bearing, tires were so loud. Replaced bearing, got new tires, everything nice and quiet. Didn't hear my second wheel bearing, even with the new tires. Only noticed when I was doing an oil change and found I had 1/4" up/down play in one of my wheels.

Though this is also an older car that's generally fucking loud at highway speeds anyway.
