What rx-7, if any should I get as a first car? The only reason I'm considering it is because I live just miles from a rotary specialist shop and don't want a Miata. But what are key differences of the FC and FD? Should I get the newer rx-8 for better reliability?

Probably an fc or fb so when you fuck it up you won't be losing much of an investment. If you take care of the cooling, oil, put premix in it, it should be reliable as a piston engine.

Yeah this isn't my first car technically, my uncle has let me drive his Silverado since I got my license. So basically I legally lease it, but this is my first car that I own. I'm not completely stupid with cars as I've helped with a 25th anniversary z28 camaro full rebuild. So I know I'm not a genius especially with rotaries but I'd like to eventually be one.

in america you can only get an fr-s/brz. gt-86 is offered elsewhere. same car mechanically, difference will be in badges, bumpers, interior, and styling.

Look for one with the 1.2L engine. The 13B won't be as easy for someone new to that shit to work on.
