GTR owner here, i don't get the hate for the vette. Yea it's slower and the 35 is older, but there's more to a car than lap times.
I've never driven a vette so i can't say what it's like (aussie here) but it looks like it would be fun, so why are people so desperate to hate on it?
Fuck the haters, buy what you want to buy. It's not like it's something stupid like stance, it's literally a small gap on a track and be honest, are you going to go track?

Going mid-engine in the Corvette would be a good way to separate it from the Camaro. The muscle/pony car class has improved a lot in terms of handling and could start to close the gap if they don't continue advancing the Corvette too.
Plus it'd leave more breathing room for GM to produce some stupidly fast, high-priced special edition Camaros, the way Ford does with Mustangs... as well as sports cars under their other marques.
Considering what GM has accomplished with the FR Corvette, I can only imagine what they could do with the MR layout... though I imagine they'd bump up the MSRP quite a bit too.
