Legit question: is the saying "when in doubt, throttle out" really true?

Does it apply to FF and RWD?
>>
>>15383818
No. It isn't. It's a sure fire way to get the less experienced in more trouble.
>>
>>15383844

So just let off the throttle and counter steer then?

Honestly worried if I were to get a real car with real horses and I let the back end go.

TL;DR cadance throttle/brake is what you want, depending on the situation and drivetrain

Think of it like this: a set of tires has lost traction? Well, what can you do help the situation?

If you lost front end traction, don't niggerstomp the brake (anymore?), and be gentle(r) with the steering. You will probably have to momentarily unwind the steering wheel some amount (again, that is dictated by the specific car and situation), ideally keeping a bit of braking applied (obviously not too easy in real-world scenarios, but it's what you should aim to do), to maintain the weight transferred to the front tires (therefore getting more traction), BUT without overloading them. If you lost rear end traction, carefully apply throttle (cadance throttling, although not as smooth as proper throttle modulation, still works) and, if FWD/AWD, you generally steer where you want your 9 second Civic/SoccermomUV to go. If RWD, mostly steer to correct the pendulum effect of the slide and keeping the car from Equinoxing, don't touch the brakes until the vehicle has settled down or you're lolEquinox'd because of weight transference

Now, I advise you take this with a grain of salt, since my only experience is limited to *way too many hours* of being proffeshunul racekar drivur in GTR2, rFactor, and Richard Burns Rally, and my real-world experience is limited to sub-200 whorespower cars. I also have experience with only one AWD SUV and one FWD shitbox, so I don't have much to say on dynamically unfucking AWD/FWD platforms, but if I remember correctly, I have applied everything I mentioned in my post, even just as a proof of concept, at least a couple times

In any case, I suggest you read Bob Bondurant's books on performance driving, and maybe even police and pursuit driving, since they're easy to come by. If not those, then reading any book from a proper author with experience in real-world scenarios is the way to go. Even if it's just a handbook, it's absolutely worth it

It's the fish eye lens.

That being said, I still don't think he was going 95. No way he would have made that corner at all if he had been. That was a 25 mph turn, taking it at 95 would have put him straight into the cliff wall, not skidding into the inside of the corner.

Dude just doesn't want to admit he's a shit driver.

Just got back from work, literally just happened:

>at intersection, making a left
>car approaching, so I'm in the intersection waiting for that car to pass
>subaru driver behind me gets impatient
>tries to pass me on my left to go around me
>crashes head on with car that was driving through intersection

my phone died while I was at work, so unfortunately no hilarious pics, but holy kek, if only the subaru owner died..

The problem with Subaru's AWD drive system is: the engine hangs in front of the front axle. This creates a high moment of inertia and a FWD-like 60/40 weight distribution. When not on the gas, it reverts to FWD-like handling and braking characteristics.

>>15387560
Although that certainly isn't a positive point drivetrain-wise, I'd say the real problem is the driver not knowing what to do when the vehicle starts doing shit he/she/xe doesn't expect it to do, and all they aim to do is BRAKEBRAKEBRAKE and they end up Equinoxing

Also, many people put get way too much confidence from the seemingly magickal, almighty All Wheel Droive system, thinking it'll save their inept asses from their fuckups
>>
>>15387560
>When not on the gas
The same could be said of any car

If you don't make use of separate wheels being used for braking/steering and accelerating in an FR it handles like an FF

The only case argument here is something like an MR or RR that naturally pivot the wheels but suffer instability as a result,

STI's weight distribution is more like 58/42 as well, and you can change that with moving shit around inside if you really want to.

Honestly people who whine about understeer or FF handling just don't know how to drive them at all, my experience has been neutral handling to mild oversteer on command in all except the middle ground medium speed corners were mild understeer rears its head.

>>15387560
What's a good front engined AWD system in your opinion? Genuinely curious.

An awd setup with a transverse engine might place the engine a little further back, but there's an issue with connecting the transmission with the driveshaft to the rear wheels.
The transmission is not in the center off the car but next to the engine and at a 90 degree angle. ecause of that the transfer box that connects these two is considerably less efficient than in a car with a longitudonally mounted engine. (pic is a Mondeo 4x4 transfer box btw)

Which is why fulltime 4wd with a transverse engine is pretty rare.

Part time systems like haldex are much more efficent and capable enough for 99% of the customers

in my opinion the focus RS has the best awd system. at least it can transfer 70% to the rear. which is pretty damn good for a transverse setup
>>
>>15388366
He locked the front wheels when he realized how badly it's understeering. Don't feel bad it's a classic Subaru philosophy of understeer is safer than oversteer!
