This problem is actually easy to answer.

>but for one it feels above my league in the social hierarchy since I'm still a student
Absolutely true.
You will absolutely look awkward in a C126 as a fragile student boi. Will probably look like you're driving in your daddy's car. Also, as student you probably won't be able to keep it running/doing enough maintenance. Tons of people like you failed in the same way.

When you got a bit older and actually look like a grown up dude, it's no problem to drive one of these and not get awkward looks, if you consider some things:

FUCKING DRIVE IT IN THE ORIGINAL CONDITION AND TRIM

If you're from Germoney:

>döner dude
black rear lights, dark blinkers, way too big BLING BLING wheels, slammed, black tinted glass all around.
moderate döner: white blinkers

>motherland blyat
hardware store "chrome" around rear lights and some other parts, some lower than standard, all kinds of cheap aluminum wheels

>gypsy
LITERALLY TONS OF HARDWARE STORE CHROME PARTS ALL AROUND THE MERCEDES.
white or black blinkers, mercedes star in the grill, mercedes star ON THE HOOD, star on the side, star on the roof, star in the butt.
usually in medium to bad condition, mud all around the sides of the car

Again, keep it original with amber blinkers, not excessively lowered or not lowered at all AND CLEAN.
Everyone will think "oh, that guy likes classic Mercedes, noice".

>keep it running/doing enough maintenance
I was told that the 126 is as solid as an S-Class ever came. You're right about white indicators, they do look horrible most of the time. I feel confident enough about my settis to make my next car a C123 though. Should be no problem on my wage as a dual student.
>>
>>15381734
You might be fine then.
Sure, they are solid as fuck.
If the car was thoroughly maintained, it might even need almost no (expensive) maintenance for years but that doesn't mean you don't have to give it some love here and there.

It's a nice car even though only pimps drove it in Germany. Nowadays, you can't really drive a Benz in Germany anymore because it has become a chavvy brand. Only Turks drive them

I found a real nice one. '84 2.3 with 117,000 miles. I'm the third owner and bought it last November from a mechanic who has been servicing it since it was new. And for being in a rust state (PA) it is in pristine condition.

Need to get new wheels though, don't really like these CLK320 wheels that are on now

The North Korean copy is much better

>So when the South Koreans began designing and producing cars from scratch, the dictator Kim Il-sung ordered his minions to show that the North could build cars, too. Except they had no clue what they were doing. The North Korean automotive “engineers” imported several Mercedes 190Es and copied most of the parts with workmanship that made the Yugo look like a Rolls-Royce. The result was the Kaengsaeng 88. Allegedly, it had a four-cylinder engine, no heat, and no air conditioning, and the cabin was prone to fill with dust while driving. Kaengsaeng made several examples, and this one was spotted in the capital, Pyongyang, in 1989. It is possibly the only photo of this vehicle ever taken..

Coming from a 560Sel owner, It's a reliable runner but it will have a few electrical gremlins here and there, mechanically it is robust and very solid. the way these cars were engineered is 80s technology with a touch of 21st century, it's a bit fucked up but for a DIYer you won't have trouble fixing anything in there. there is ample amount of space to work with in the engine bays

You see, Mercedes-Benz has always created -readjusts fedora- the HIGHEST QUALITY automobiles. Performance and appearance; Mercedes cannot be beat there. Just look at the subtle, SUBTLE lines of the body. Whew! -hurriedly adjusts fedora, creating a rat's nest of greasy hair underneath- You see, m'lady, nothing beats a Mercedes-Benz. It's like enjoying a cigarette after an expending session of, dare I say, coitus. Now, if you'll fetch the aforementioned towel, I can provide you with both tonight... -fedora is friction welded onto the mats of greasy hair- -CLASS INTENSIFIES- -UNDERSTATED BULLSHIT INTENSIFIES-

so these cars are good with high mileage?
>>
>>15381383
What's the average price for one of these with ~200k km? They are a bit expensive
>>
>>15405300
Mine is at 206k KM everything has been serviced with frequent oil changes and what not.
I had a powersteering problem in which previous owner put ATF liquid instead of genuine PS fluid from MB, I had that fixed it works like a charm now.
I've got a rough idle problem where the engine shakes even if it's at a correct idle, there's a vacuum leak or something somewhere that will need to be adressed.
when buying these cars make sure the valve cover gaskets have been replaced, they leak on high mileage.
I still got an oil leak, it's not big it drips over night a couple of oil I add some each month for now it doesn't bother me.
if in good condition, you would be able to balance a coin on the engine or inside the cabin.
mechanically wise, nothing "breaks" for no reason. It will give out symptoms and you would need to address it as soon as possible if you don't want it to escalate.
electrically wise, there will be issues that's for sure especially on high mileage cars such as sunroof jamming, windows jamming, some short circuits causing fuses to blow which then cause a certain electrical component inside the car to cease to function such as my climate control, I have no A/C at the moment. the fuse for the A/C keeps blowing up after a day for whatever reason. Like I said, electrical gremlins. but if you take care of it, it will take care of you. Fantastic ride.
In my opinion, these cars will not lose their value in the near future

No, no LS swap that is sacrilege. 5.6 SOHC swap as originally intended by the engineers. Or, the 5.0 DOHC offered in the 500E/500SL.

This is a car I aspire to. I have a 300CE right now and it's a bit beat up. I want to do something like
>>15405183
to it, some big meaty tires and maybe some steelies for wheels, paint in a flat grey or black, paint a balkenkreuz on the sides like a warplane and then maybe do up the exhaust to have 6 pipes coming straight out of the hood.

I could totally buy right now:
560SEC
500SL
600SL
190E Cosworth
560SEL

But what I'm really saving for is a 500E W124. I really like these old Benzes, they just push all the right buttons for me.

>>15405421
My 312K mile C124 has a stumble/stall at sharp throttle inputs, we are looking at it currently but I am pretty sure it is either the FPR or O2 sensor. God damn I need to get that thing reliable again the warm days are slipping away and I need my damn pillarless (with all 4 windows and sunroof working) to putz around in. I also leak oil, think I have the beginnings of some sort of gasket leak? It's only right on the outside near the exhaust and the oil is always a clear light brown no signs of water/coolant. I also need to do my PS fluid, it looks like a lightly creamered coffee ATM.
>>15405517
Look for rust. Everything else can be replaced and repaired easily (ish) these cars were designed to be serviced and repaired not disposed of when trouble arose. Head gasket leaks on anything with a cylinder bank larger than 4 (AKA don't worry too hard about the V8's but the I5 and I6's do check, though my I6 has not given me too much other than above) check the PS fluid as it is often neglected. Make sure idle is good because the EFI is a pain in the dick to diagnose. Cracked dashes are common. As are broken odometers.

Pic related is mine when I bought it 2 years ago. Few rust spots all over but nothing horrid..Though I haven't checked under the plastic trim yet..*gulp*
>>
Realistically what would be the best petrol Mercedes engine to swap into a 190E for a reasonable price? looking for a step up above my 2.6
>>
>>15407907
The M104 DOHC I6 in either 3.0 or 3.2 displacement. That will be the biggest most powerful Benz engine you can fit into the 190. You are lucky you have a 2.6 as they 2.3 will need additional modification to fit an I6 as the 2.3 is an I4 and doesn't mount the same.

You could also put in a 3.0 DOHC turbodiesel from a 300SD W140 and while it would hardly be an upgrade in the power department it's still cool as shit.

If you want to make the wrong choice, there have been many many Toyota I6 swaps as well.
>>
>>15407907
Oh, now looking up the M104 variants there was apparently a VR6 version, the 2.8L that I was not aware of. Though it's hardly a Mercedes engine, the bottom end was apparently made by VW.

There is also the V6 that came on the later W210 if you want to go that route. I am not sure if it would directly drop in, though.
>>
>>15398021
Got my driver's license on one, I have mixed feelings about it, it's just not special or interesting.
I know I'm stating the obvious, but the W124 was so much better in every single way, I'm glad my father had one back in the day.

wat

There are three basic M104. Of course all of them inline six.
3 litres KE-Jetronic
2,8 and 3,2 litres HFM

plus two AMG versions
3,4 litres KE-Jetronic
3,6 litres HFM

I would not go for the KE.Jetronic engines. The HFM 2,8 and 3,2 engines are very cheap in Germany. I don't know what the prices are elsewhere. The mechanical part of the W201 engine swap is easy, as the M103 and M104 blocks are very similar. The electrical part is more difficult. If you want to use an original ECU which I would recommend, go for a early one without immobilizer.

>>15421843
Yes, I believe that is the other modification. Though I don't know if you should hae to move the core support. I think it's actually more what you described and that's the reason why it's harder to fit an I6 in. I don't think it has anything to do with the core support, or if it does, that's not the hard/big blocker that you will run into. But yes, I believe you are more correct than that other anon, I think I read that too and it sounds familiar but I am not sure.

Also guys, I just noticed something, I think.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Mercedes-Benz has ever made a car with pop up headlights or any type of actuator that exposes the lenses/covers the lenses.

Headlight wipers don't count, I'm talking like covers or flip up lights..

If anyone knows of one that does have flip ups let me know I'd love to see it but I have never heard of or seen one...

>>15422421
It would be severely underpowered, even with the turbo. The pillarless coupes from this era are extremely heavy, heavier than their four door counterparts. At least this is true for the 124 coupe. I looked up curb weights and my 300CE is very close (like within 100 pounds or so) in weight to a 4 door S-class. It was higher curb weight than the wagon or the sedan with the M103. The only ones that were heavier than the CE were the 500E and the LWB E, for obvious reasons. So, couple that with an engine that is "adequate" for the 123 and throw it on a next-gen 126 and you're probably going to have a bit of a dog.

For more fun, put that engine into a 190E 2.6, or maybe even a 2.3, that should drop right in, but the real engine to swap into a 190 is the 3.5L DOHC I6 Turbodiesel from the 300SD W140, that would probably knock your socks off in a 190. Less power than most petrol engines but gobs and gobs of torque.

>Brutalist

Nope. Brutalism as a term was coined in 1966 to describe a building designed in 1949, but built in 1950. However, the first 'true' brutalist buildings like the Unité d'Habitation were not built until 1952 and onwards.

I owned a 79 240D. The car was fun, in the sense that it was so hilariously slow and turned worse than yacht. It got a ton of attachment. Went to a bar and a bunch of hicks loved it, told me to never sell it. Jokes on them, I sold it for $500 to my cousin. After you've driven it for about 5000 kms, it definitely gets old and you don't care for it anymore.

During the Holocaust, the Nazis has essentially mobile gas chambers that recycled exhaust gases into a box in the back where they would put prisoners. Maybe he's trying to recreate that.

Damnit if they would just raise the tire profile, lift it 2 inches and fix the retarded camber on the back wheels and get rid of the stupid speedhunters sticker I would be in love with that car.
>>
>>15434661
Drives me nuts that a car with a windshield sticker saying speed in it is not properly set up for it. Change it to stance hunters.
