Yes
I always see them get stuck in the snow and their shitty little FWD can't do anything about it. So if you live somewhere where Winters are heavy definitely look elsewhere. If not then do what you want.

at least that 1.4l turbo is pretty reliable and easy to get power out of with a tune....?

This is true. Toyotas are good tools, but horrible "Cars". They hardly ever experience any major mechanical issues aside from normal wear, but they're very, VERY boring.
