The gears aren't always in the same place sometimes you need to pull a lever, pull up the shifter itself, or push down the shifter to get into reverse. The layout is also different depending on the number of gears also, and reverse isn't always on the same side. Also when someone is trying to figure out how to operate your car, they don't really want to fuck anything up.

a buddy of mine bought a CR-X with a switch that killed power to the ECU. Eventually as well his ignition switch started to fail and wouldn't crank the car over. Since the car was a cheap pile of shit we basically took one of those clamp-on thumb button starters for bench testing engines and permanently wired it up to run his starter. The switch for the ECU power was in the little coin tray to the left of the wheel and the thumb-starter was in the center console. None of it was apparently visible and the little ECU switch was even hidden behind some gum wrappers and shit
