Why was the US the leader in the auto industry by far in the 50s and 60s even though European cars handled much better? Why were awful handling extremely huge cars the popular thing in those days?
Because Americans are awful handing, extremely huge people.
Three reasons. The interstate highway system, more space, and our cities were mostly designed with straight roads instead of the mess of twisty roads built up over hundreds of years.

Post-war production was much better than anything the war-torn Europeans could throw together, combined with a rapidly growing population necessitated lots of cars quickly.
America was also still patriotic and people were still wary of foreign products, especially with the Soviets looming over everyday America. Why buy a German or Japanese car when people would report you to authorities for possible espionage?
