Having problems with my rm85, it always has to be crash started from a large hill to get it to start after long periods of being out of use. However once it's been started as long as I let it idle once a week it starts on first kick?

I wan't to get it sold but want to try fix this issue beforehand any ideas?

Can someone tell me how the hell I am supposed to be gripping the throttle? Do I go from a neutral angle? I can't get enough leverage to go WOT if I do that.

Gripping it from the top feels weird too, now I need to crank my wrist all the way up to roll off the throttle.

Running into a lot of problems with this simple aspect of riding. I also noticed I do some weird shit when down shifting/revmatching where I hold the throttle instead of rolling off completely. I think i might be too tight or some shit.

Ahh. Very good than.

Idk. Maybe it's just the kind of cat he is. Some kind of fancy expensive French breed. I got him free and all he does is chillax and drink my bourbon when I set it down
>>
>>15332395
a little bit? maybe i should try more aggressively

>>15332416
bottom end shouldn't be going out, had a full service / rebuild by a bike shop a year ago when it lost compression. shit was expensive. It's not vibrating any more than since i've owned the bike, still hauls when it's running. It's the first 2 stroke i've owned, my other bikes would always start with no worries regardless of time away from them.
>>
>>15332436
you are holding onto the handlebars too tight, you arent actually supposed to hold yourself on the bike with your hands you hold on with your legs.

as far as not being able to use all the throttle, grab a second hand full and turn it all the way, wheres the problem? im assuming you don't have a 1/4 throttle (old bike)
>>
>>15332436
i usually got just above a natural neutral.
so if you natural angle is 3 o clock i grip at 2 o clock and readjust if i need sustained higher throttle
>>
>>15332445
yeah put a new spark plug in it, since it was rebuilt did the bike sit for an extended period of time without starting?

If it did the bearings in the bottom end would have formed a layer of rust while it was sitting and that sediment is what is causing the spark plug to foul, otherwise you are running dirty fuel clean the fuel tank out and run a fresh batch of no less than 32:1 through it.
>>
>>15332436
You can swap on a throttle tube from a different bike with a larger pulley so you don't have to turn it as far to go from 0 to WOT.

As for gripping it, you should rotate your hand forward before gripping it and going WOT so you can turn far enough. When just cruising you will probably want to grab it so that your hand is in a neutral position while holding the throttle at cruising speed.
>>
>>15332436
Try holding it with thumb and index finger for a minute and when you are tired of this bullshit your hand will naturally fall into an optimal position.

thanks will try that. it's a ninja 250 (2005) so not that old. i don't know what the fuck the problem is to be honest. it feels like the throttle loses responsiveness but it could be a combination of the fact that my hands are constantly numb and fatigued from gripping it.
>>
>>15332470
yup, the clutch also sticks together from moisture sometimes which requires you to drop it. alright will pop out and grab a new plug hope it helps! cheers

Well, yeah, you will need to hold it wot most of the time, so you may as well adjust your grip to be in a neutral position with open throttle.

KLR 650 or Ninja 250 for a first bike? Used for city and highway commuting, occasional interstate trips. Off road would be fun, but not necessary.

The KLR would probably be the better choice. I think they're about equal on the highway, but the KLR is probably much more forgiving and isn't something you'll grow out of.

That said, the KLR isn't great on the highway stock, but there are two really simple things you can do to change that.

Madness

>>15332909

>>
>>15332935
The first thing you'll need to do is the "doohickey mod" if it hasn't already been done, but that's unrelated to highway performance.

Basically there are two key mods for highway performance on a KLR. The first is known as the 22 Cent Mod, which basically involves using a pair of washers as a spacer for one of the carb needles or some shit like that. The other is changing the front sprocket from the stock 15 tooth to a 16 tooth for a higher top end at the expense of low end torque.

>>15332927
>>15332938
>>15332939
>>15332975
Thanks everyone.
>>
>>15332987
Additionally, because it's an 08, it's going to consume a shitton of oil. That's just a flaw inherent in the bikes made that year. The only real solution aside from topping off the oil regularly is to get a 685 or 705 kit. They're each a few hundred bucks, not counting any labor or machining costs, but they not only solve your oil problems, but they also give you a lot more power which makes highway performance much better.
>>
>>15332987
and the often overlooked perk of cops will pretty much ignore you on all counts
>>
>>15332995
How often, roughly, would I need to top off the oil?

And this would be my first bike. I decided for sure I wanted one in December, so I lost 100 lbs and started working two jobs for the summer to afford one(college student.)

I'm mentioning this because I can't say I have any experience working on them, and would like to take that into account when I decide for sure.

>>
>>15333009
That's something you'll have to figure out as you ride it. Keep a quart in your panniers or something.

Honestly if you're new to working on bikes, the KLR is probably the best possible choice. It's a really popular bike with a single cylinder engine with only one carb. It's not only really easy to find information online, but parts are easy to come by as well for the same reason. No matter what you encounter with that bike, someone has already posted about it on a forum somewhere.

The fact that it's just a single cylinder thumper with a single carb also means it's stupid simple to work on.

I was going to buy one as my first bike, but the guy I bought it from sold it before I got there despite a previous agreement, and I was so pissed that I ended up buying a cheap Katana 600 instead on impulse. I really regret that decision.

Could use a little HELP /dbt/

I found a '05 Kawasaki KLR250 on CL, listed as a "2006 Yamaha KLR250", seller told me he got it from a lady who doesn't ride for $2000 because someone owed her $4000. He's firm on $2k to get his money back because the bike is too tall for him, I'm fine with that. He sent a pic of the VIN from the title. Bike has 7k miles, chain looks a bit rusty and the rear fender has a small piece broken off, couple zip ties above it. The bike looks clean otherwise. He said he'll trade for quad or other toy but not in a rush to sell.
Should I be concerned? I assume the year/make error is because he's not a bike guy, and it's not like a wild obvious scam story. Might be checking bike out tomorrow.

lol, sorry hotshot ;)

$2000 doesn't sound crazy but i'm in canada and we pay a lot more for bikes

i bought a complete wreck of a honda 500 that was repainted and the tires were too rotten to even test drive that turned out to be a dream bike

but it all depends on your confidence/knowledge and how much you're willing/afraid to lose

the klr (klx?) 250 is a pretty bomb proof bike that can take a lot of abuse

is it super cheap and beat up? (might still be a good deal)
does it look pretty good and is super cheap for inexplicable reasons? (be more wary of this)
is it okay looking and a decent price? (probably a safe-ish bet)

Thanks, I'd say it's okay looking and decent price. I want to learn some wrenching and not worry too much about the cosmetics but I'd say this one is probably a safer bet than some other dual sports I've seen on CL.
Since the seller doesn't ride it and it's my first bike I just need to be sure the engine is working. I'm fine with learning the maintenance to freshen the bike up but I'm not looking for an 80's bike money pit ordeal.
I've downloaded a bunch of manuals and hear these bikes are reliable so maybe I'll luck out.

Die while proving yourself courageous and fierce in battle (basically something that would warrant the medal of honor, not just dying in battle like a loser), and be chosen by a valkyrie.

Keep in mind that Freya gets first pick of the chosen slain though, so the best of the best go to Folkvangr to spend their afterlife with Freya and her cats. Valhalla is actually just a consolation prize.
