Classic car discussion
Post classic car pictures
Blogpost about classics and trucks

A classic car is an older automobile. The common theme is of an older car with enough historical interest to be collectible and worth preserving or restoring rather than scrapping.

Your weekend homework: go to
http://www.highdefforum.com/car-forum/115098-muscle-cars-1962-1972-a-675.html
and bring something cool back

Extra credit: work on your car and post a before/after pic

/ccg/ i've come to a point where i want to dump a 350 small block into the front of my Corvair.
How retarded am i?

desu the Frunk actually has a lot of space.

if I recall correctly, my dad who is a corvair buff from way back, said that is the most common mod they used to do back then. of course it would have been a 327 in those days.

Typically they mount them in the back or where the back seat used to be but i'm not trying to deal with a SBC sitting right behind my head or the plumbing to send coolant all the way to the front.

My real question is, is there enough physical space to put a 350 SBC crate engine in the Frunk? You should axe your Dad for my me anon.
>>

sorry. I forgot to mention that he passed away last year when a jack stand failed while he was underneath.

actually it was a dairy crate but those things are pretty strong.

Air is thinner at altitude meaning you will run richer than at sea level. You may need to jet down or lean your carb out slightly to compensate. Some factory carbs had mechanisms to read outside air density and tune back fuel but that most likely isn't what you have.

No longer cost effective and sensitive electronics have failed while a bureaucracy needs to spend more money.

Because in the 70's truckers were notorious speeders and cops never forgot. 44 tons of shit can kill a lot of people.

more like 365 at the wheels probably. makes an earth moving amount of torque.

my 300 made 170hp gross in 1965, which probably equated 115 at the crank, which meant like 88 at the wheels. today, i'm lucky if it is making 60 at the wheels.

I can't wait to put a 351 in here

I keep toying around the idea of painting the truck but I think I will wait until I am done modding it. my problem is, I have a dent in the hood that drives me crazy.

I wish I was in single digits.
Is that same engine bay dimensions as 65/66 mustang?
I always wondered if you trimmed down the shock towers like they did on 69 boss' (but slightly more for you) and either did the tiny coil overs that are mainstream now, or did the modified McPherson strut setup like on the fox bodies (with stand alone strut and spring moved between lower control arm and frame) if you could keep a lot of the "factory" parts with just slight reinforcements.

Fortunately it's so hot right now that I probably won't be able to shoot paint for a few weeks anyway, so I can take my time and do it correctly without being tempted to half ass and cover everything in 10 coats of build primer

Our cars made it onto the floor because we were good ( my buddy did one car- EVERY vacuum line was hand-bent stainless tubing). That car was totalled doing 150+ through the desert on the way to its second year at sema when it blew a tire- owner said "hey pull over and unload I want to drive in".

Top alternator bolt broke in half on my galaxie today, sheared completely flush with the head. Gonna be a bitch to get it out. I am parting out my 4 door donor car now too if anybody needs some third gen nova parts in SoCal. :)

Subframe should be gone this weekend. And bumpers and front bench seat are also pending sale.

DMV was requesting a CHP inspection, and didn't allow me to get the title or put it on non-op. So fuck those bitches, I'm not giving them anymore money. Parting out, then probably scrapping.

I come asking for advice. Would buying a running, but rusted-to-fuck Galaxie for $700 be a bad idea? I already saw it in person, and it drives, but the rust has me concerned, and I don't know enough about older cars to know if this particular model is worth it for the amount of rust it has. (Mostly floorboards and door trim are rusting through.)

To be honest, its only 700 bucks man, if you've got the spare cash to keep it on the road go for it. It looks better than I thought it would. I expected the bottom of the doors to be completely gone kek.

If it was any more I'd say fuck no, but this is great if you want to learn how to weld in new sheet metal, its a four door so they aren't really desirable, but you can do whatever you want to it without feeling guilty.

i find the easiest part of fixing a car is the engine as its easy to source, bolt on and done in steps with good troubleshooting advice

the hardest part about any old car is its rust. Welding in new floor pans, sanding it, bondo, making it flush or prepping the entire car for paint is the shittiest job for me. If it were up to me i would wait for a clean rolling shell with interior and source my own engine+trans, but for $700 its really not a bad price

the only thing about that 390 is, and I am probably right, is that it's a 2v 390. that was more of a "daily driver" spec 390 with a 2barrel carb, lower compression pistons, more restrictive heads, more restrictive manifolds and a milder camshaft.

Sold the subframe today. Guy buying bench seat flaked out, go figure. Car will be practically free when I finish parting the rest out.

Now I just need to figure out how to move it...

I'm thinking either

Foldable HF trailer (for motorcycle us when done)
Boat wheels
Or making my own wheel contraption.

Maybe I can manhandle it too. How much does an old steel body car weigh? I figure I can weight up the back to help with leverage, then it should be as easy as just holding it at the right angle and rolling it.

Might need the trailer if i sell the rear axle though. I got very rough asphalt too, so nearly impossible to move around and cant use those moving dollies with the tiny wheels

they were rated with gross hp, and they wanted to sell cars. this is a 67, not when the big insurance scares where as deep.

it probably made like 230hp at the crank at most, more likely 190. think about a cvpi, sohc, fuel injection, better flowing manifolds, better flowing heads, and it only makes 215 at the crank. get real meng, I love the muscle era but that's a bunch of ish.

Worst case scenario I don't like it and just buy a HT version and swap parts I guess?

I ordered the TCI front end this week, going to figure out what gearing and width I'm gonna need and get the currie 9" under way. Pretty excited, but not sure if I should just tub it while I'm at this point so I can fit a tire wider than my dick on it. 225 I think is the max right now.

>>15376160
The TCI kit welds in so it would be a mess to move it to another car. Tubbing won't get you much clearance without relocating the leaves to the inside of the framerails and making new rear mounts. IIRC the rear end width mounting surface to mounting surface is 58"
>>
>>15376183
I meant the engine/trans/axle. TCI is not reversible.

Rear is narrower than that, but relocating the springs isn't a big deal either once youre already in that deep I'd think. My main concern is not doing it and then getting it all together and hating it because the 225 won't hook at all and then having to take it all apart again.

I haven't purchased it yet so who knows, but the plan for this is a 427w which even on a bad day with a hydraulic roller will be around 450ish to the wheels. Doing the suspension and brakes before I even mess with the engine build. Don't want this thing to be a death trap.

You're closer to one of my dream builds than you think. I actually did a short post about it further up. Take a 61 or 62 Buick Special Wagon, turn it into a pickup, put all the subframe kajiggers and floorpan from a first gen Tempest in it, install the transaxle and suspension from a C5 or C6, implant a supercharged Rover V8 crate engine (simply dropping in an LS or other completely unrelated modern V8 just feels wrong, and there are one or two companies that sell recreations with most of the faults taken care of). It would be fantastic.

>buying a classic car with no title

How can I easily register an older car that doesn't come with a title? The one I'm looking at is coming from Alabama and they say you don't need a title for old cars in Alabama. I can't find anything supporting that, but I know Georgia is like that for 1985 or older. The state I'm in needs a title no matter the age. They say I can just bring in the Alabama bill of sale and that will work. Are they right or will I have to pay more than what the car's worth to get it legal?
>>
>>15378470
Ga resident here.
All you need is a bill of sale with you and the sellers signature, the correct vin number, and the selling price/trade offer. And two forms of ID.

If there's any problem, like mine when they couldn't pull up the vin, they'll give you a vin verification sheet.
Then you go home, call the non-emergency police number and ask to get an officer out to verify your vin off your car. He will fill out the sheet and you bring that in with everything else.

i like the look of the Parisienne better, but the Rambler is such a nicer, cheaper murrican car

I love the big tires on the rear. Must just float down the road.

Would this work in a state that needs a title? The car is a 1980 Triumph, so I dunno if it still counts to the current title system with the current VIN system being newer than that

Finally time to start body work. The trunk used to pop open easily with the turn of a key, now it's stuck. Any tricks to poping it open besides sticking a super long extension through a hole behind the seat to unbolt the latch? I've tried beating the crap out of it already.

might sound stupid but have you tried locking it and unlocking it?

Oh man, this thing is literally glued to the road. Very little body roll, too. Floats pretty well on muddy puddles, too. Not sure if that's a good thing.

Hmmm delicious mud. Some of it actually seemed to get into my ignition system. Engine was misfiring badly so it kept stalling if I didnt give it any gas. Above 1500 RPM it didnt misfire anymore. After a few miles the water that must've gotten into my plug cables seemed to have dried off and everything ran fine since.

>Forget to cut out license plate last post.
Ahw fuck it. Fun fact: it kinda fits me. It didnt take me 3 seconds to match the letters LKZ to what in Dutch translates to lazy cunt-bag.

Not sure what the trouble is, I checked my vacuum seals thinking maybe my brakes were starving the engine, but they seem to be fine. I can't even idle anymore without my car dying on me.

i need to know where i can snag that pkmn decal at. it's so cheeky

i just have the brakes left to do and this thing should be ready to go. they're as spongy as hell and no amount of bleeding is making a difference. gonna start by replacing the MC and see how it fairs.

So I'm gonna try something stupid

With the gearing I have, I could run the 1/8th mile in first gear all the way through, I barely get up to around 5800 RPM through the traps.

I'm thinking this would be alright for bracket racing, I wonder how consistent this shitter will be

Right on. I've seen this in action a few times, the classic cop suddenly doesn't give a shit about the law because "I had one of these when I was your age, I loved that car." scenario. Another reason to DD classics (except for the counter scenario where they hit you're project with a vehicle inspection and you're fucked).

What is that fender trim piece that runs off the grill about?

Some 69's have it or they don't, was it a part of a luxo option or something?

Then buy a '70s luxury barge; they have many of the modern conveniences, more modern parts yet are easy to work on, go for next to nothing, and are a great starter vehicle.

$1,500.00 can buy you a decent classic car to wrench on.

I had never seen a '68 or '69 without that trim piece until you mentioned this. I wanted to say that they're factory and you've probably only noticed it on partial restorations but I've found multiple examples on Google Images of very restored '68s and '69s without that piece (pic related). The body panel itself is still molded for that piece but the actual trim isn't there. Weird. I wonder if it only came with the SS pack.
