Probably would be a piston engine, basically whatever available.
I don't think even an ls1 would fit. Maybe a 4.3 or a sub 300cuin v8

You would have to re-wire it front to back by hand for the electrics to be reliable. Re-do it all from scratch. But you plan an engine swap anyways so it shouldn't be much more difficult, just time consuming.
GM 60* V6's are popular swaps with Midgets. The engines are decently powerful, small, easy to work on and have decent aftermarket support. Grab a 3100 or 3400 from a Chevy Lumina or Pontiac Grand Am. Use the T5 transmission from a 1982 to 2002 V6 Camaro. Flywheel and clutch from a 1982-1994 F-body

Also, keep in mind that GM's 3800, while having a similar name, is a completely unrelated engine that only shares the transmission bolt pattern.
The 3800's firing order (1-6-5-4-3-2) gives it a shit sound while all the 60* V6's make a glorious noise with a good exhaust since they share their firing order with Nissan's VQ engines (1-2-3-4-5-6). It you wanted the 3800 you'd be going into uncharted territory as well as choosing a harder to work on engine for a tiny car with an already small bay.

That looks way to professional.
I was just going to slap some shit together on the cheap
>>15325214
How is that any different? They are the same firing order essentially, just ones backwards.
Actually, now that I think about it, would I even fit? I'm 6'5"
>>15325266
I'm 6' and while not that tight, a few extra inches would be a serious squeeze
It's also not very wide, so if you're fat as well you'll have trouble fitting for sure
>>15325249
It makes a huge difference in the sound.
The 3800 is also a 90* engine that is literally an all iron version of the Rover (coughbuickcough) V8 minus 2 cylinders. The 3800 is heavier than the 60*'s and due to the angle, is nowhere near as balanced. Being a 90*, it's also a lot wider than the 60*'s meaning that it would be harder to work on than the 60*'s in the MG's engine bay.

and a bonus:
DOHC 60* V6 with a custom exhaust. Unlike the 3800, the 60* engines can be built to rev.

Jeremy Clarkson is 6'5 and he fit in one just fine.
You couldn't do any racing in an engine swapped MG, you would be limited to open track days. Are you really going to go through all the trouble/money of putting together a car that you can't race? Obviously not and this is just another daily "what if I engine swapped this car even though I've never wrenched before I have a $700 budget" thread. A great track car is a car that has a class to run in with a full grid many weekends out of the year, is reliable, easy to build, tons of parts availability, and is a good driver, so a Miata, that's it, it's the only low budget track car. If you want to be special and unique go race vintage after saving up $30-40k

Yeah but that's TV and they have had to modify cars for them in the past.
Still o the fence on it, I just see pre-smog MGs all the time for cheap, but I don't have money right now.

>engine swapping a Midget 1500
That's actually a really great car once you get the rubber bumpers off. You don't need to swap it; just get those useless pieces of rubber off the front and rear, tweak the suspension, and just tune the engine.
Even though it's a track car (and wouldn't need them anyways), the rubber bumpers on the Midget are pretty useless. At least the MGB is big enough to take something of a hit; they're just dead weight on the Midget.

Oh. It doesn't have an engine or transmission.
Still, look around for one with them, and you'll have a capable little go-kart as soon as you get the bumpers off and lower the ride height to original specs. The Midget is light enough to not really need much more of an engine.
