>take wheel off to get a new tire put on
>scrubbing away the brake dust/road grime on the inside
>find this

Well fuck me running. Now I'm scared to put it back on.
>>
>>15314458

someone welded over a crack, most likely fine and worst case if it lets go it'll slowly leak out
>>
>>15314458
>scared of a weld on his wheel
You know this is how wheels are made right?
>>
>>15314473
It's a 12 year old car though with the original wheels. No telling how long it's been like that.
I don't want to ruin another fucking tire or something.
>>
>>15314487
How would that ruin a tire ???
>>
>>15314487
>No telling how long its been like that.

Exactly. You've been driveing the car for how long. Its fine stop being a mega pussy.
>>
>>15314487
>the original wheels.
Are you the original owner?
>>
>>15314473
You know this is how cars are made? Welding metal parts together.

The weld isn't very pretty, but it looks solid enough,
>>
>>15314706
I'm aware, just got done welding my car together.
>>
Sand it down and it won't even be noticeable, let alone causing you to sperg out
>>
>>15314587
Second owner with 130k. Have only had it for 6 months.
>>
>>15314706
>Rolf can spot shoddy spot welding from a distance of fifty goats

It's a shit weld desu.
>>
>>15314720
>it won't even be noticeable
It's on the inside of the wheel dummy.
>>
>>15314473

You do know spot welding on a wheel like that is almost always a temporary solution, right? Half the time the wheel cracks again right beside the weld. OP is lucky that the original owner paid a really fucking skilled welder to repair it.
>>
>>15314926
>paid a really skilled welder
Dude fuck right off you don't know the fucking history of this wheel and you're not a fuckin welder.
People weld wheels all the time to repair them, go watch some wheel repair videos on YouTube, done properly it's just as strong as the original wheel.
Literally eat a bullet.
>>
>>15315180

Sorry I pissed you off, tripfag.

Must be great living in a little bubble where you only see the wheel being "fixed" and not what happens when it goes down the road, catches a pothole wrong and the wheel cracks right beside the weld.

Nope, clearly just physically seeing a weld that *looks* good means it IS good, right?
>>
>>15315399
>wheel cracks
>air leaks out
OMG ITS OVER
lmao
>>
>>15315426
>typical tripfag may never be wrong
>>
>>15315426
Jesus Christ you're literally the worst tripfag. Not even Alphonse, gs400cuck or that faggot who had a v6 mustang and his girlfriend had water retention issues could out-shitpost you.

Actually that's a pretty decent weld

there's some top tier fucktards posting in this thread. welding wheels is a no no. if a truck was caught by the DOT with a spotweld on the rim, they would get towed and fined like no tomorrow. those idiots talking shit like hurr durr thats how wheels are made have no fucking clue how wheels are made. first off, when rims are welded, they get heat treated after the weld to restructure the material at molecular level and take off the stress. if this is not done, high rotation speeds under weight + side loads will cause torsion that could make the wheel crack or even explode.
second off, the circumference (and sometimes the entire rim) is usually a single piece of metal. it's born round and whole. that is what makes it so strong and capable of resisting shock loads. once that complete circle part is compromised with a crack (and you ought to wonder what kind of impact made it crack to begin with), it will NEVER be as strong again. you MIGHT be able to unite the material on both sides of the crack with a deep penetrating weld and a significant add-in of material, but then that area will be stronger than the rest, and the rim will probably crack next to the strengthened area. also the rim will no longer be balanced.

a rim shattering in many pieces while you are driving at high speeds, in a curve, or while braking could very well be your death.
>>
>>15316355
oh and i forgot to add this-
stop being fucking poor and buy new rims when they crack. jesus christ, why are welfare recipients even allowed to own cars? if you can't afford to buy a new rim, you shouldn't have the car. buy a bicycle, welding bike rims is not dangerous. or just take the bus.
>>
>>15316355
>>15316368

Don't bother M8. Lots of /o/ will tell people not to use a torque wrench on wheels, why would they be smart enough to tell people not to weld a wheel.

Realistically its only acceptable to weld a wheel if you've got some goofy aftermarket wheels that you need to order or something, and only then as a temporary fix.
>>
>>15316413
I mean, you don't NEED a torque wrench to put on your lugs, but it's certainly better to use one when you have one... and you can get one for $10 at harbor freight
>>
>>15314926
Any welder could fix a crack that size no problem. It's not fucking rocket appliances.

Wow fuck me that is an ugly weld, did the guy even bother trying to wipe that shit off the metal before he tried welding on it?

I would throw that shit in the trash, personally. Looks like some undercut on the right side and pinholes on the left side and just a big inconsistent mess all over. I wouldn't want to be welding on something as critical as a wheel to begin with since it's supposed to be properly balanced and heat treated and made of a single piece. It should at least have been a passable weld.

>>15314473
>>15314706
That's not how wheels are supposed to be made, they're forged or cast.
>>
>>15314893
Implying no penetration. Its not TIG weld material but definitely a fine weld. Not gonna break
>>
>>15316658
Forge and casting still heats metal up to form the wheel, much in the way a weld does.

Also 2 piece and 3 piece wheels are pretty much welded together.

A weld may possibly weaken or change the properties in a section of an alloy wheel, but most of the time you'll never encounter a situation where it would be a problem.
>>
>>15315399

You are more likely going to crack a wheel by riding on low profile run on flats.
>>
>>15314487
the only way to ruin the tire is if that fails and you continue to drive on it. If you have a flat pull the fuck over immediately.

I managed to ruin a tire with a small puncture in it by driving like 1/4 of a mile on it.

One of my winter tires sidewall got fucked up that way. Just slapped a donut inside and it just werks.

Was glancing at Facebook just to conversate with two bros in a chat, and I see some hippie kid mad as shit about his wheels like this, and his looked nicer than this one even, saying he's gonna sue and Shit lol

>also the rim will no longer be balanced.
As if wheels as a whole are ever balanced, right?

I work in the metal industry with machinery under MUCH higher stress than some wonkey ass rim. You'd be amazed what stresses welds can take, even when not done by some super american welder specialist from /o/...

>thinks an extra gram of metal on the wheel will throw it out of balance
You realize the wheel weights they use to balance wheels go down to 1/4oz as the finest, 28g in an ounce.
A fucking one gram of additional metal from a weld isn't going to make your wheel any less balanced than it already is.
tldr. you're a major fucktard.

Try $21.99, just Bought one to do the clutch on my car.

This breaks the studs/separates the wheel under speed/warps the rotors.

Just get them tightly snugged after the rim is fully seated on, then 1/4 of a turn.

I'll bet you're one of those people who tell everyone you MUST torque every single nut and bolt on the car.
>>
>>15314458
>Now I'm scared to put it back on.

If the tire ever goes flat and the tire receives the weight of the car from a sharp protruding bead, that may damage the belts in that location due to the forced stretching/cutting action of the protruding weld.
>>
>>15319216
you're talking of truck steelies her, on alloy wheel you can go to the half gram for the static balancing, and 5g to the dynamic.
>>
>>15317155
Google heat effected zone, and post weld heat treatment. There is a very good reason why what the other anons about the wheel cracking again around the weld is true.

Paying full price for anything at China freight
>shiggydiggydoo
They were just on sale for like $9.99 with a coupon.
Hell the even 20% they run almost all the time works on most shit if you can't wait for a "sale".
>>
>>15314458

Metal fabricator here, looks fine, no sign of stress breaking beyond the weld so it has done its job. Could have/should have been dressed back for cosmetic reasons, but structurally you've got nothing to worry about.
