A thread for our beloved econobox pocket rockets. Talk experiences, ask for advice and questions and generally shitpost about the Fiesta ST.

>'Back from Le Mans' edition
Of the two hot hatches on display out there - the Focus RS and the Civic Type-R - which do you prefer

>What is a "Hot Hatch"?
A Hot Hatch is a manufacturer produced, performance oriented variant of a standard hatchback, designed for improved handling, increased top speed, acceleration and generally enhance the driving experience.

>Are all Hot Hatches FWD?
No. Whilst most Hot Hatches are FWD, some are AWD or even RWD.

>Isn't FWD shit?
No. Just because you can't get the arse out by stamping on the accelerator doesn't mean you can't have fun.

>Aren't Hot Hatches just for Europoors?
No; with the launch of the Fiesta and Focus ST to joining the MS3 and Abarth in the US, it seems like the Hot Hatch is beginning to take off on the other side of the Atlantic, but Europoors definitely have more choice.

>Is the Fiesta ST actually good?
The Fiesta ST is one of the best small hot hatches on offer at the minute; so yeah they're pretty good.

Thinking of buying a FiST, but I don't really like any of the 5 colours they offer here on it. Wondering if I can get it in one of the standard Fiesta colours instead. Also I drove one expecting amazing things, but it wasn't everything /o/ has hyped it up to be. Good fun, don't get me wrong but it was lacking a bit of that something my Clio had.

I have a question not covered in the first post.

What if someone has a coupe or sedan version of a car with an actual hot hatch variant. Like say an EM2 or ES1 Honda Civic (Hot hatch variant was the EP3).
>>
>>15306295
American sport compacts under 5k:
Dodge Neon SRT4 (2003-2005, sedan)
Honda Civic Si (2002-2005, hatchback. Basically a 160 HP EP3)
Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged (2005-2007, coupe)
Saturn Ion Redline (2004-2007, 4 door coupe)
Ford Focus SVT (2002-2004, 2 door or 4 door hatchback)
Nissan Sentra SE-R (2002-2006, sedan)
Volkswagen Golf GTI (1999.5-2005, 2 or 4 door hatchback)
Volkswagen Jetta GLI (1999.5-2005, sedan)
Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo (1999-2005, hatchback)
Acura RSX Type S (2002-2006, hatchback. Literally a DC5 Integra Type R)

And that's just including 2000+ cars. If you go back through the 80's the list gets a lot longer, mainly thanks to Chrysler's turbo K-cars.

what do you mean theres no competition?

you're racing against other drivers, and other manafacturers. you're car needs to endure more abuse then a typical circuit race, and you race on all types of road surfaces and weather condition (snow, rain, dry etc), not just a smooth tarmac curcuit.
plus some stages can be new/different (though not every event/stage is different then previous years)

a stage will have more variety in the types of corners then a curcuit race going around the same thing.

>>
>>15306767
If it's your DD, or you plan on taking it on trips, Golf. If it's your weekend hoon car, WRX.

>>15306728
I know they're competing, but it's not the same as watching cars physically fight for track space and race position right in front of your eyes. If they did rally cross on full rally tracks, that'd be the shit.
>>
>>15306799
Base Fiesta with no options you should be able to get one OTD for under $20k, it's hard to get it for much less considering the used ones are holding value so well.

https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/667805149/overview/

A lot of people buy from Koon's because it's so cheap, you might be able to get an Out-the-Door (taxes, titling, fees included) quote from their internet sales guy and then shop that one around your local dealers to see if they'll match.
>>
>>15306818
I think the absolute lowest OTD price I've seen on the ST is around $18.5k or so just for reference.
>>
>>15306799
With correct shopping and rebates, under 20k for a new one. I got mine in November of last year right after thanksgiving. 2015 model, end of model year+ thanksgiving sale+ rebates and I was out the door in a base model for 18.5k

welp. everything is fine except for my front right tire. picked up a nail in the outer tread right next to the sidewall and these tires are too low profile for me to repair it. new tire should arrive today then I get to experience the joy of mounting and balancing. I also ordered my accessport last night, so I'm pretty excited for that.
>>
>>15307045
Nice dude, I got a nail 2 days after getting my new tires mounted/balanced. I was so incredibly pissed, and it was very close to being irreparable but I lucked out.

Congrats on the AP, I'd recommend tuning from Tune+ if you're going to get custom tuned.
>>
>>15307058
awesome thanks for the tip

i dont know what it is, but it seems to me that in the last few months tune+ has gained a ton of popularity.

Adam was popular when he was tuning for MAP (he also owned a Fiesta for a bit so that was cool), but he really took off when he started tuning the EcoBoost Mustang's. He tuned my car almost a year ago (E30, 93, 91, Economy tune) and I'll probably have him do my aftermarket turbo tune as well (whenever that finally happens).

I leased this one. Sold my R32 (pic related, took that as I accepted the money and walked away), leased this and bought a house so wasnt the best time to buy. I pay around £280 a month.

It is great. The interior just feels better than stuff like the Focus ST and it is faster. Compared to the S3 the drive is pretty much the same but the R comes with a lot more as standard and its cheaper.

Can have fun in it and yet I can get 40mpg on the motorway.

I'm split between wanting the Fiesta ST and a base WRX. I haven't gone for a test drive yet but I'm leaning toward the ST simply because I'll be able to get it for quite a bit cheaper, although the WRX is really appealing too. I'm in Canuckistan so both cars are up passed 30k after taxes and shit (before any bargaining though).
>>
>>15311219
fiesta will feel significantly smaller. less power, more nimble feeling, and cheaper after market.
wrx base is obviously lacking in the accessories, and imo it's kinda worth the next level upgrade if you can get it for near invoice, but I imagine that's out of your price range. the main thing that bothers me about the base is no fogs. I'm sure awd would be nice for winters, but the fwd isn't terrible either. follow your heart fag
>>
so there's literally been 0 mention of a '17 model year fiesta st huh?
>>
>>15311236
The next trim level of the WRX mostly gets you nicer lights and I'm planning on replacing pretty much all of the lighting for around $1k probably, so cheaper than getting the next trim level, also don't care for a moon roof.

Is it worth going with the mounttune 215 package or just wait a little while to make sure the car isn't a lemon before going with the next one up and losing most of the warranty?

>>15311243
Well they are developing the '18 model year for early/mid '17 I think so it'll probably just be a rename with some really minor safety improvements that nobody ever notices
>>
>>15311247

Yeah, even though I want to buy this year the Fiesta ST will have the new model out sometime next year and the WRX is likely to have a new design next year or the year after, especially since the 2017 WRX is literally exactly the same other than some upper trim options being available on the lower trims now
>>
>>15311243
The ST200s are out for order over here.
>>
How much fun can be had in a regular, non-ST Fiesta?
>>
>>15312173
Lots. I had a 1.25 before my ST, and you can still have fun in it. It handled brilliant on the twisty roads, just lacked a bit of power.
>>
>>15312173

Also, while I'm asking

Is a regular Fiesta the best handling non-hot hatch you can get in the states?

I'm a poor fag and want something that lets me pretend I have a hot hatch until I graduate school
>>
>>15312220
Mazda 2 is probably worth a shout
>>
>>15312220
It's very fun and nimble, not sure about best handling with the rear torsion beam, but it makes it work. The Focus is also supposed to be excellent, and the base version might be slightly more comfy than the base Fiesta.

>>15311260
Yeah the refresh is supposed to happen soon.

>>15311247
I personally don't care much for the MP215 package, you don't really get much and you're probably going to want more power after installing. But it is excellent if you're really worried about your warranty and want a little more than what''s given to you stock, it's not awful.

My biggest complaint is it's a one time use only product, you can't ever resell it or include it in a part out, and it's prohibitively expensive. I would get custom tuned after a few thousand miles making sure you don't have a lemon.

>>15312158

>>
>>15312236
How has reliability been so far? I haven't really seen any issues other than some hose clamp issues that all ecoboosts seem to have and the obvious rattles for a car of this price point.
>>
Can anyone recommend a good winter dd? Something happy plowing through snow and salt that won't rust out in a year. I've been leaning toward a Mazda3.
>>
>>15314683
It's fine, but I'd recommend getting a custom tune. Mountune's in-house tuner Randy is supposed to be excellent, and I believe you get his tuning services with the purchase of a Cobb AP through Mountune USA (if I recall).

There parts are high quality, I use their RMM and their front splitter. Their intercooler is a bit small for the aftermarket options, but still does a better job than stock.

>>15314740
I've had no issues with the '15 and I'm custom tuned with most bolt ons. I've only had to change the oil, and the tires were getting worn around 15k miles. Everything I've read about the '14 and '15 has been rock solid, I think the '16 might have an issue with the AC Condenser and has a few other minor differences from the previous years.

Currently sitting around 23k miles and I'm doing the brakes next.
>>
>>15314896
Thanks for the answers m8.

Have you noticed any brake fade or really accelerated brake wear from the "torque vectoring"? If I really wanted to I could only disable that by turning off the ABS right?
>>
>>15314908
Not really, the stock brakes are really good enough for the car (most autocrossers are sticking with the MotorCraft Fiesta ST pads since they are so good, over Hawk HPS 5.0 or similar). I honestly don't really notice the brake torque vectoring all that much driving it around town, and you can turn off/put into sport mode the stability control (which is what's really noticeable).

Changing the brakes/fluid at around 25,000 miles seems pretty reasonable for brake wear, and I don't drive it gently.
>>
>>15314927
That sounds like a pleasant surprise, hopefully I'll be able to do a test drive next week and go from there. I've noticed pretty much all of the STs around my area were manufactured around August of last year so hopefully I can haggle the dealerships down a decent amount.

Fiesta fit all of these needs, and it's still quicker than your Mustang. :)

Most people just watch the YouTube reviews that are pretty favorable, Fatt Marah did this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbcj-zE7gBw

He owned one for a while with pretty unbelievable numbers, running a 100 octane tune, tuned and dyno'd by Cobb (who gave him all the parts for free in exchange for the promotion I believe). The community was pretty skeptical and eventually he sold the car to a guy on the forums, though I'm not sure if it ever got independently dyno'd.

Just general hatchback red pill would be convenience of a sedan with extra storage, while maintaining low weight and pretty good power/weight ratios.

The biggest complaint is generally the FF drive train, though there are several AWD variants.

how does someone get better at driving?

are there advanced courses, or even training instructors that do things like this?

for example, I could never Park close enough to a curb, especially in new cars, how do I know how close I am? even parking, I don't know how much room I have in front of me or behind me.

even highway driving, certain people have tricks with who is where at certain mirror positions.

how do you get better?
>>
>>15324286
Just practice driving m8, gotta just have a sixth sense for these things if you don't have an auto parking car or whatever.
>>
>>15319524
I see you post your FiST often on here. I'm looking to get one, but I have some worrying concerns. Maybe you have some insight.

What is the aftermarket like for this car? The one I looked at had a cobbshit intake and exhaust which makes me worried that it might have had the ecu flashed. The intake wasn't properly bolted to the engine, and the added size caused the engine cover to not fit. The bastard who owned it even put the shitty cobb badge on the back.

Also, the brake vectoring. Does it tear up the brakes pretty bad, or is everyone over exaggerating?

Overall it seemed fairly nice for a shitbox, but I'm not sure its worth blowing 15 grand on when there are alternatives.
>>
>>15325684
http://www.fiestastforum.com/forum/forums/55-Fiesta-ST-Sponsor-Forums

That's a pretty comprehensive list of vendors, there are some more, but most of the part manufacturers have a presence on that board. Aftermarket is good and growing, lots of good options for custom tunes as well.

Cobb products aren't *terrible*, I have the same intake on my car and the engine cover definitely still fits if it's properly fitted (unless maybe it's a MY16 with a 14-15 intake? I've heard there's weird fitment there). Their exhaust is a fairly popular mod as well.

As far as being tuned, that's hard to know for sure. I'll say the OTS Cobb tunes are conservative and I wouldn't worry too much about buying one that had been running one as long as the driver seems reasonable. Though I probably wouldn't buy that combination of car from a vapelord.

New base model Fiesta ST's are going for 18.5k-19k out the door, so keep that in mind as well.
>>
>>15325684
Oh, and brake vectoring isn't really noticeable. Maybe ever so slightly, but you can fully disable the stability control, or put in sport mode to let the tail hang out a little more.

I'll be doing my brakes/fluid soon at 25k/miles. The stock pads and brakes are sufficient for the car and are excellent (though they do get HOT). Brake fade is not tremendous, but on a heavy track day in the middle of summer they can become a problem. Several vendors are offering brake cooling ducting now, not sure how effective they are.

I'm not done tuning yet, so it's hard to say realistically what I'm making. I'd say I should be somewhere between 350 and 400 whp when all is said and done, but the limit is really the fueling at this point. The only option currently is port injection, which is pretty expensive. The stock internals are only good up to about 350-400tq anyways, so if I want to go any higher I'll have to spend lots of money.

No, you are actually wrong.

torsional rigidity has everything to do with how the frame is constructed. You can have a hatch or sedan built to be very rigid or not so rigid. There is nothing intrinsically about either design that lends itself better to torsional rigidity.

The body is part of the frame in these cars. all the extra bends in the sheet metal around the trunk area in sedans makes for a more rigid body and thus a more rigid frame.

Yeah, I get what your saying.

It's still incorrect.

And to be fair, even if you were correct something as simple as a stiffer antiroll bar would rectify the problem.

Of the two the FiST is far more buttoned down than the FoST and as a result can enter and exit corners like it's on rails. The FoST has a bit more torque and usable space, but also a comically high turning radius and some shitty toque steer.

Personal opinion is the FiST since I think you're less likely to go flying off the road in one and it's usable power is more practical than the FoST since it doesn't cause your car to pull one direction or the other.
>>

RMM is easy for anybody to replace by themselves even with no prior knowledge about working on cars at all.

and yea, I've thought about different wheels. I used to hate those, but they've grown on me a bit, so idk what I'm gonna do in the future. I might get new rims for summer and use those stock ones for winter tires

Jelly of that cornering. I'm very interested in seeing who the RS Buyers Market is. It's such a shit steep price for a Focus, and people are already justifying the cost.

Got a 2005 Mk4 GTI back in September and have put 6000 miles on it since. I love the thing. Even though the interior is crap and it weighs 4000 lbs. Seriously though The one that I bought has two ashtrays and no cup holders. I had to buy the inserts for them. I've bought a roof rack for it since this pic.

FoS reporting in. Still thinking on if I ever do want to get a cold air intake and the tune. Still waiting for a good time to put the springs and shocks from an ST in.

The focus wins in the track battle but everyone says the fiesta is the one to get because it feels better. Try em and decide.
>>

Mkiv gets 26-27 highway. I get maybe 23 in city, stop and go traffic, and highway on my way home from work. Can't speak for the mkv though I imagine similar since same engine.

So, I'm torn between the Abarth 595 Competizione and the Megane RS Trophy. Would consider the Fiesta ST but my mate let me drive his for a few hours and it didn't feel as good as the base Abarth and I'm not a huge fan of any of the colours except Storm Grey on the ST200.

What should I go for?

My mustang has the magnetic and it's so nice. I get a fair amount of compliments from people too.
>>
>>15335608
I wish the Fiesta came in Guard Green, I probably would of chosen Magnetic on the 2016s though. :(
>>
SO I did some comparisons, looking at my budget and at what's available (withing some set limits) and here's how my options look:
http://www.zeperfs.com/en/match1328-4366-2672-3962-2493-1488.htm

All in all, I'm still into Megane RS Cup/Trophy Cup(so probably 250/265HP).
The BMWs seem to be more susceptible to being stolen and service costs will be probably higher, not to mention daily MPG.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?
>>
I know its alot to ask but can anyone post pics of the Fiesta ST in each available color?

Kinda busy atm so i cant do it myself
>>
>>15336168
The Megane RS Trophy produces 275HP, not 265.

This one is Spirit Blue, which I don't think they offer in the US
>>
>>15336380
IIRC, you've got the RS Sport (250HP), RS Cup (250HP, stiffer suspension, LSD, etc.), RS Trophy 265HP and later (post lift) RS Trophy 275HP.
>>
>>15336414
There was the RS250, which had a Cup variant still with 250HP, then it was updated with the RS265 with a Cup, and it's been facelifted recently, and now they're all RS275s with Cup, Trophy and Trophy-R variants.
>>
>>15336466
Ye, that sounds more refined.
But there's also Limited RS Trophy (265HP).

Anything in particular I should be on look out for?
I'm most definitely taking it to a service station for a checkup and only looking for non-accident ones (so, taking someone who deals used cars for first look).

Sup anons.

Just tested a Focus ST2 yesterday. Salesmen led me to an empty industrial park and told me to run free with it.

Man what a blast. Punchy and agile. After cross shopping I think I finally found my car.

Planning on putting in my order for this later this week.

My gf just bought a 2006 Mini Cooper S and it's a ton of fun. I'm almost torn between my miata and her hot hatch but they're both a ton of fun to drive.

It made me want a supercharger for my Miata

I'm tempted to trade in my FiST for a Diesel FoST. Is this a good choice? Car is used as a Daily Driver btw.

Had a quick look at one of these today. It has the same running gear as the current Clio RS, except this actually has a 6 Speed manual. What the fuck Renault?

I almost got a Mk4 instead of the Mk5 y'all replied to. I like the Mk4's face a ton but the overall styling and tunability of the Mk5 made me go with that.

Yea it''s metallic
>>

it's such a nice color. something more flashy would be nice, but at the same time, it really makes the car look super low-key, which I really like

So lately I've been thinking and I'd like some input from a thread where people seem to have a lot of info and passion about quick hatchbacks.

I've got an old car that's falling apart and it's about time to sell it and move on. I like the Fiesta, I've enjoyed driving the few I've had the opportunity to do so.

The Fiesta ST was really fun, but is out of my immediate price range. I have however found a used hatchback Fiesta SFE for bang in the middle of my budget. I would like to purchase this SFE, then spend some time and money upgrading it to be silly fun. Maybe not Fiesta ST tier, but as close as I could get it over, say, a two year period.

I can buy the SFE outright and spend some of my salary on mods in the coming months. Does anyone have any anecdotal or informative experience with the SFE and modding?

Thanks

>>15338960
Are you looking for something that would be a fun DD or do you think you would start getting hooked on doing HPDE and autocross events? Also what's your budget and general location? You'd be surprised what the car loving neets on this board can find.
>>
>>15339000
Dem trips

I would be using this as a DD that also has some "sleeper" potential with the only real visible modifications being the wheels and the ride height. I very much enjoy the idea of a zippy little 1 liter mated to a 5 speed manual.

My cash in hand budget is 14k. This will be enough to grab the SFE. If I cut down on what I'm putting into savings for a few months, I could have about 3 grand to play with in three months, all of which I would happily throw at the car.

Ideas?
Thoughts?
Questions?
Concerns?

Thanks.

I don't know much about the USDM Fiestas. What engine does it have? Aim for one with a 1.0 Ecoboost. And a manual.

Also, as far as mods to make it fun; I know nothing about the aftermarket for these cars, but I would just slowly install all the handling bits form the ST, like wheels & tires and suspension and shit. And get yourself some bucket seats.
>>
>>15338960
You can get Mountune upgrades for the 1.0 Fiesta. Apparently, it's very good upgrade for the 1.0 engines, or so I've been told.
>>
>>15339860
I like the SFE a lot, but at $14,000 you can find a used Fiesta ST for $1-2k more and you'd be much happier modifying that going forward.

Who's got two thumbs and payed almost 40k for a Golf? This guy right here. Still jelly of the RS in this thread, I had one on for a MSRP deal but when it got here the dealer decided to add on another 6k when I went to go pick it up. I'm definitely not complaining though I absolutely love this car.
