It's a porsche, they're fairly reliable cars compared to others in the same price range. The thing with the Early 2000's 996 911 are the IMS bearings. There's a lot to read on what to do, might as well get started now:

no, unless yes.
>if you already have a drivers license
get an international drivers license, it basically says that you can use the license from your country. This means you won't have to take a test or take a shortened test on U.S. road laws before you can legally drive.
>you can get them from AAA here, idk where in your country
>they usually look like little books
then get a P.O. box so you can set up insurance and register it with a state, usually the one you'll be buying it in
>shop around, state laws vary widely

>if you don't have a drivers license/ can't get one in your country
you'll have to get one here won't you?
>pretty easy but again varies by state
>my state lets you use a p.o. box on your id as mailing address but you have to carry around a little brown piece of paper with your real residence on it.
>can't buy guns without the brown paper either
>also yours may say something like non-resident

Thank you, all that information was really helpful. I'll be in Texas and as far as understand getting things, like insurance, there is a bit easier since they cater for all the people crossing the boarder.

I also know some people that live in Waco and Wichita Falls, so I'll get some local info from them.

Buying a car? Yes. Registering it and getting the title to the car? Probably not. Doesn't stop the illegal Mexicans from driving though. They find a way.
>>
I've got low profile summer tires. I recently picked up a nail in the outside tread about a half inch in from the sidewall. Every shop says its not repairable, or that they're not willing to do it. I doubt my ability to repair it correctly myself.

So, I've ordered another tire from tire rack. I'm about 1/3 of the way through the tread on my tires all around, and I don't want to buy a new set yet. My question is this: which position do I want to put the new tire in? My front right is what's punctured, it's an FF vehicle.

Thanks.
>>
>>15298408
Fronts wear much much faster than the rears in an FF car so put the two tires with the most tread in the front.
>>
>>15298408

>>
when it comes to brake pads, which is better: metallic/semi-metallic or ceramic? what kind should I use on my Ranger? thanks in advance senpai
>>
>>15299424
depends on price/value and what exactly you want in your brakes...

>do you care about brake dust
>do you often tow/haul stuff with your ranger?
>are you just slapping on pads, or are you going to do a full brake job?
>>
>>15299424
also what is a good brand? should I just get the duralast from vatozone or find something else?
>>
>>15299444
I care about brake dust to an extent
Occasionally haul stuff like lumber etc but never tow anything
just slapping pads on. I might try bleeding and adding fluid and all that, but I'm not sure because I only plan on doing the front brakes for now
>>
What does Honda's V-tech actually do?
>>
>>15299480
it kicks in
>>
>>15299468
I mean honestly if its just the front pads, then I would go with the mid-range brand of whatever your local parts store has, not the cheapest economy shit and not he $120 shit either. Also make sure to grease caliper pins. I can't remember on rangers they are floating right?
>>
I'm absolute normie with pretty much no knowledge of cars except what some of the basic parts do and how to drive one.

What's the best way to go about learning more about cars and how they operate?
>>
>>15299480
Its vvt. Glorified vvt just like skyactive vvt.
Vtec is older early vvt though. Vvt gives higher acceleration through quick rpm gains. Vvt stands for variable valve timing. Vvt also is in nearly everything made after the 90s.
>>
>>15299485
this
>>
>>15299468
>>15299504
or just order like motorcraft ones off rockauto for cheap as shit...stock pads...
>>
>>15299507
>>15299480
This is wrong. VTEC is not VVT.

VVT adjusts cam duration for optimal performance across the rev range. VTEC is variable valve lift, which kicks in at a certain RPM and acts as a secondary cam profile which opens the poppet valves on the cylinders a larger amount to flow more air and fuel into the cylinder at higher RPMS for increased efficiency and power.
>>
>>15299526
>increased efficiency and power
pick one
>>
>>15299506
Own a shitbox that breaks all the time and forces you to fix it.

Alternatively start by doing basic maintenance on your car. Brakes, oil changes, etc. Shit stupid grease monkeys can do. Then if you ever wonder what X is on your car google it.

You just build the knowledge over time. Cars are complicated machines with numerous parts. For parts like differentials and gearboxes my best suggestion for learning resources would be those old 1930s training videos on youtube. They do an absolutely amazing job showing you the working principle behind the part/setup and show you exactly how they work in an actual car.
>>
Whats the cheapest functional wideband o2 sensor w/ gauge out there? And then whats the nicest looking one?
>>
>>15299526
Anon your description of vvt sounds more like vvt-i.
>>15299535
Its only efficiency.

Seeing how shitbox/poorfag/cheap cars of today are typically 90's models, is it true that it 10 years poorfags like myself will drive 00's models, and if so, what cars in particular are going to age well(?) enough to fulfill that role that 95 Civics etc fill today?
>>
>>15295276
I have a 2003 C4S. Pretty reliable, some stupid quirks, but nothing that will prevent the car from running and driving reliably.
However, if you've never owned a RR/MR car, this would be a bit of a leap. Maybe get a shitbox AW11 first to familiarize yourself with the platform so you don't hurt yourself/someone else.

I got a ticket the other day and on the ticket it says I was driving a Nissan Titan, but I was in a D21. Can I use this to get out of it at all?
>>
>>15300039
depends if there are any other witnesses or circumstances
also if you can leave reasonable doubt as to where you were at the time

my bro crashed his Austin mini on a rainy day
and although the police officer listed the vehicle as an Leyland truck
because the crash was thought to be the result of reckless driving he could not get out of the ticket
>>
>>15300058
The ticket was for ignoring a construction zone sign and using a closed road, two cops found me and my friend parked up there.
>>
How does one actually go about mixing oil with their fuel in their RX-8?
>>
>>15300071
sounds damnable
only in cases of parking fines have I heard of poor signage being used as a defence
and even if it can be shown that the signage was poorly placed or otherwise obscure they might argue ignorance of the law is no excuse

outcome will depend on the discretion of the officers and court
luck might give you only a warning and a reduced fine

If I had to do it alone and the seller wasn't from a good neighborhood and/or he seemed sketchy I would meet at my bank, during open business hours, I would get a cashiers check / cash and do the exchange there in the building. Title transfer, bill of sale, and cash to hand.

>Eclipse GSX 1999
depends

a new like new, mint one is a 10/10 car (if you don't buy into the drivetrain meme).

2 littre turbo with 220 bhp and 0-60 in 6.5 seconds makes it stupidly fast for the price. it's certainly the best bang for buck.

the biggest downsides are the fact that finding one that hasn't been fucked to the ground by poor mods and "lol no maintence" is like finding a double rainbow.

you can probably leave most miatas in the dust allready.

honestly, racing depends more on the driver than the car most of the times.

Complete noob question: I bought a bike and manual says to use "any fuel with at least 87 octane rating".

Does that mean if pic related are my options, I could put anything except diesel and LPG in it?

If there's some leftover fuel of a different octane rating in the tank, will I be kill?
>>
>>15300964
>87 octane rating
That means 97 for yuro, so 3rd option in pic
You wont be kill, but it wont be as efficient and have the same power output.
You can put a lesser quality fuel but only if you dont have other options.

This weekend I realised my front tires look a little like pic related (not as bad, but they're dry/cracked as fuck)

How badly should I replace them and should I just replace all four?
>>
>>15301009
I've waded a bit deeper into the manual and noticed the English part says "min. 87 R+M" while the German one says "min 91, Forschungsmethode".

I guess I'll ask an attendant when there.
>>
>>15300367
You can use a caliper compressor or a table clamp to push the pistons in, no bleeder crack needed
>>
>>15301014
If they are dry rotting, that means they are also hard, which means significantly less traction.

Replace all four.

What color is it?

Do you have a buffer?

If no buffer I suggest a high-grit polish for small scratches in the paint, going over the whole car by hand with it won't really do much. If you have a buffer and are really autistic about it but paint isn't too bad, I'd go with a meguiars polishing compound, buff the whole car, and then go across it with meguiar's mirror glaze.

If the paint is really scratched up I'd use Meguiar's rubbing compound prior to polishing.

Hey, so I live in New York State and I own two cars - one for winter and the other for summer driving. The past three years I've transferred the plates between the two cars, and just recently I was told that when I move plates, the old car's inspection sticker becomes invalid. Is this true?

Also, winter car's inspection is due every Nov., while the summer car's sticker is every July. This year I've been late and just today got the papers, so the transfer will be done later this week. My concern is the inspection sticker - is it still good, or do I need to go get a new one immediately?

You'll be fine as long as you don't drive like a jackass. So, be extra cautious in the winter, brake early, ease into both accelerating and braking, and for the love of all that is good, clear ALL your windows and the even the snow on top of your car! (hood, roof, trunk). Nothing worse than me driving behind a car with a ton of snow on the roof and it blows back into my windshield.

If FWD cars have their engine power going to the front wheels, then why the need for a transmission tunnel and floor shifter? There's still the exhaust going underneath, but does that in of itself warrant a tunnel?

As an example, let's use a Ford Focus sedan - not trying to come off as "sporty", but rather a friendly little car to get from point A to B. If this is the case, then why not build it with a column shifter and eliminating the tunnel?
>>
>>15308815
FWD cars don't have tranny tunnels, they have exhaust tunnels. Some fwd cars that have higher trim options that include awd may have slightly bigger tunnels. The shifter in fwd cars use linkages that go forward to the transmission, have a floor shifter for a manual car is much more comfortable. Automatic cars retain this shifter location to simplify construction.

>>15308832
Alright, thanks for explaining!

An i6 aka straight-6 has 6 cylinders all in line with each other, a v6 has two banks of 3 cylinders, this creates a v shape, hence the name. The degree of slant in this v configuration can be one of several choices, 60-90-120, this has to do with a few different things. The degree angle affects the balance of the engine because the stroke of each piston, on a v6 opposing cylinders fire off starting from one end of the engine to the other but only one cylinder at a time. This causes the crankshaft to receive odd vibrations especially at high rpm. It also has to do with where the crank throws are located on the crank shaft, its complicated read up on it. Inline engines have 2 cylinders firing at the same time, this causes both sides of the engine to receive vibrations that cancel each other out. The 90 degree v6 comes from when car companys chopped off 2 cylinders from a v8 in order to save money. v8's are typically 90 degrees, as it inherently works with that many cylinders in a v shape. 120 degree v6 are extremely rare I think Ferrari made some, they are very wide, so they need a wide car, not very ergonomic. 60 degree v6 were made to make v6 packages smaller, so they added a bunch of counter weights to the crank the smooth shit out. Straight 6 are inherently balanced because of the firing orders, v6 have to be designed to be balanced and even then arent as smooth. V6 is still amazing though because of small packaging and what not, and they still can rev high.

I know you can purchase stand alone TPM systems that come with a control module you keep inside your car. Honestly just check your tire pressure every week by hand, really not that hard.
>>
>>15308815

fwd cars have a rod or linkage going to the trans in the engine bay, the shifter is on the floor just because thats where people are used to it. some cars like mid-00's Civic hatchbacks and Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix had manual shifters on the front dash vs the floor
>>

THAT IS A BIG MYTH, YOU CAN CHANGE OILS AS OFTEN AS YOU WANT.

Just make sure when you change over to get as much possible out. So you aren't mixing oils. This is more applicable to when you are going from conventional to synth, as you dont want conventional detracting from performance of synth. Make sure you let it drip for a while and change your filter. Go purolator they are they best.

Honestly it is a great looking car. There are just some fucking shitty problems with it. The manual tranny is shit if you make anything over 400hp, unless you want to drop 4-5 grand on a built tranny. Get an auto gsx, do a few little mods to the tranny, clutch pack, valves, etc. and you are golden for like 800hp or more. Either tranny just get an fp manifold with a bep housing hx35, and just enjoy that shit. Easy as pie to make power and great fucking looks, just make sure your front ball joints are good and keep your suspension in good condition, grab some KYB AGX and have fun cucking everyone.
>>
>>15299480
Wow people are not very will informed, V-tec helps the cars efficiency, there are two sets of cam lobes on the cam shaft, one has low lift and duration used for efficiency, one has larger lobes and longer duration, used to make power at higher RPM, like when you need it, when you floor it to pass some one on the highway you will make more power to do the higher lift. the mechanism work on oil pressure, once the engine is spinning a certain rpm, it causes the oil pump to create a certain amount of pressure to force the higher set of lobes to activate.

My buddy has an sw20, it is really a cunt to work on, just cramped as fuck back there. Great looks though and feels like a go kart. S13 is magical though especially the coupe version. Sr20 is good for like 400hp at most then you have to resleeve and thats a lot of money. 3sgte only needs new internals though so that could be a bonus if you want to make like 5-600 hp

Could just need a head gasket or could need an engine. It depends on how badly they overheated it and how long. Plus there's a reason it needs a head gasket. Usually because it overheated from a clogged radiator, loss of coolant, bad cooling fan, etc.

Personally I'd plan on it needing an engine. Most people beat on cars until they won't go anymore and there's no reason to think this one would be any different.

Theres not really any casual, inconsequential way to blow a head gasket. Its really fucking bad. Like literally the only thing worse is the engine grenading itself, which, ironically, engines like to do after they blow a head gasket and the idiot driver keeps driving at all.

The only time you should consider buying a car with a blown head gasket is if you plan on swapping in a new motor.

Well the mechanic I had said it was the tensioner that was bad. He said the chain and everything else was fine. I don't drive the car because I don't want things to get worse. I took it to the Dodge dealer and tried to pay the $110 diagnostic fee just to be sure that the tensioner is what needed to be changed. The dealer calls me and says that the car needs to go to the "heavy assembly line" or something like that and that costs $660 off rip once the car rolls in. Just to take the front part of the engine to see the timing chain. Another mechanic didn't even diagnose the car. He just looked at the engine and said "it's fucked up". Then he said he has to charge me $1700 to check the chains. After telling him no, he calls me later saying I need to change the engine which will cost me $2200 plus 2 year warranty. I told him to kiss my ass and go fuck a wrench. Wat d/o/?

what's a middle engine, exactly?

an engine in the middle

usually the middle of a car is anywhere between the wheels, so a Corvette is mid-front and a Ford GT is mid-rear, but in both cars the engine is within the wheelbase, so they are both mid-engined.

Normal cars usually put the engine over the front wheels, Porsches and Deloreans have the engine over the rear axle or behind it. Audi likes to put the engine ahead of the front wheels because it makes for forgiving handling.

>>
>>15308894
Almost got it all

An inline engine will be more balanced due to the relative motion of the pistons, i.e. one is moving up, one is moving down. These cancel out the inertial forces on the engine.

With the pistons in a V engine, there is a component of horizontal velocity relative to the engine's center of mass, and the motion of the other pistons do not cancel this horizontal motion out, resulting in vibration.

not really, only straight sixes and v12s are inherently balanced. this is due to the firing order

an inline 4 cylinder is not inherently balanced and needs counterweights

it doesn't matter if it's a v or inline or a w, all that matters is the firing order in relation to the cylinder count

That's when you're meant to downshift. Otherwise you'd either shift into the correct gear before braking and blow your engine, or stay in a high gear whilst braking to a halt and stall the car.

Generally I downshift while braking at the opposite engine speed of my upshifts. If I'm upshifting at 4k rpm in second and end up at 3k rpm in 3rd, I'd downshift at 3k rpm in 3rd and end up at 4k rpm in 2nd.

I have 12 volts at the hot wire(s), but the ground pulse isn't coming through. If I ground them manually, they do fire, and the ground wire(s) are continous back to the ECM. I have correctly timed spark, so the CPS is working (I think? Unless there's a seperate Hall Effect sensor for the injectors.) Throttle position sensor is working correctly, so it shouldn't be in "flood clear" mode.
>what I suspect
Either there's another condition that prevents the injectors from firing, like the "flood clear" mode that's currently active, or the ECM is jacked.

I have very little white smoke coming out of my tail pipe, does that automatically mean head gasket leak? Haven't seen any other symptoms like milky oil or coolant loss.

Is there any negative effect of adding stickers to the underside of the hood?
I own a brz and intend to do all that modding with it, but dont want to ruin its pure aesthetic.

I want something cheap, fast, open top and can tow a small trailer across rough terrain at negligently fast speeds. I have $10k. What do?

Was thinking a beat up F-body or old corvette. Maybe with a slight lift.

I have an 88 mr2 with what seems to be a bad piston ring. I did a compression test and all cylinders came back okay except cyl 3 with 150 psi and cyl 4 around 130 psi. Spraying a little oil brought cyl 4 back up to about 150.

Anyway I don't have a lot of mechanical experience. The most difficult thing i've done is rebuilding the distributor. What's the cheapest way to fix this issue? Pay someone to rebuild the engine? Buy used one off craigslist? Buy one from an importer? Try to rebuild it myself?

Thanks in advance.

To clarify compression was
175 175 150 130(up to 150 with some oil)

None of your options are cheap.

Simplest way would be to buy another known good engine.

Possibly keeping the old to rebuild and or improve, if you have enough spare time.

Heat from the engine will degrade the stickers more quickly and make them more difficult to remove.

Maybe a complete swap or just a set that only coils the front.

Some special models of corvettes actually did not come with a tranverse leaf spring

Okay, when you rev a v8 engine like in a Mustang, does the engine move with the transmission from side to side or is just the engine?

Not the op, but offsetting firing orders does smooth the engine.
