Anyways to my question.. i'm fixing some surface rust on car. i've sanded down to bare metal, should i put primer on and then body filler over (with a bit of sanding ontop of primer before putting on body filler), or just put body filler ontop without primer?
will it hold good with primer and then body filler?

you guys have any thoughts on straight pipe exhaust systems?

i want to replace my muffler and resonator with straight pipes rather than buy an expensive exhaust system

i know i'll need to replace the cat to get significant performance gains but this seems like a good start and i'd like to improve my exhaust noise over stock

i cant really see why people would drop a few grand on exhausts when its just some piping

How do I jack up my car and ensure my body doesn't go splat on the concrete?
>>
>>15263523

ya dont buy that car

>>
>>15263531

use jack stands

then take off your wheels and slide them under your car just in case

>>
>>15263461
Regular turbo.

99℅ of modern diesel vehicles are turbo because diesel alone does not produce much power at all.
>>
>>15263529
>significant performance gains
Unless your car is well known to have a horribly restrictive exhaust you won't see much gain from stock
If you do have a horribly restrictive stock exhaust you will need to retune the ECU to get good gains

>improve exhaust noise
It will be louder yes. Not always an improvement though.

>expensive exhausts
Because many after market exhausts in the price range you are thinking of come with new performance manifolds and are made from stainless steel that's harder to bend and weld. Also bends in exhausts have to be mandril bent to retail their circular cross section.

I need some help finding out the appropriate tire inflation pressure for my tires. The sticker in the car says the tire size dimensions should be P175/70R13 82S and the front tires should be at 32 PSI, while the rear ones should be 29 PSI. The problem is the car has 185/70R13 86T tires in the front.
>>
>>15263076
The problem is your truck doesn't have much power in the first place and your AC compressor is old and from the R12 days. Given that you probably have a huge power draw that your compressor takes to even spin the thing.

It's just old and tired but if it still works don't fix it.

What primer are you using?

Epoxy filler can go ontop of primer, while just about any other type of filler should go on the bare metal

>>15262673
If you've removed all the bolts and you're sure nothing is holding it back; sledgehammer. The fuckers can sit fucking HARD

If you're planning on reusing the rotor; put a block of wood into the brake disc so that you dont hit the metal directly with the sledge. If you still need more power then you can try "balancing" the piece of wood ontop of another piece of wood on one end, while the other rests on the cap that covers the wheel bearing, as then you'll be free to use your tard strength

Also make sure that, if its on the rear, that the parking brake shoes aren't slightly engaged and is holding it

Did you even grind and neutralize the rust before you did that?

>>15264715
I did, but didn't grab a photo. Its the third time I did it on this car so its not longer really an option, as the steel is now so thin that in a few spots I've gone through to the cork-like material inside of the steel

Its just to make it look "acceptable" before selling it, the fenders, doors and so on will have to be replaced if one wants it rust-free
>>

>>15261856
Let it dry, then vacuum up the loose bits. Use a dry nylon brush meant for household cleaning and scrub the rest off. It should get it clean enough.

I have a 2002 subaru outback LLbean edition. Bought it used in mostly excellent condition (few dents, electronic magic rear view mirror didn't work, and a few cracks on the plastic in the center console). I recently ticked it over 180,000 miles, and I'm starting to smell a bit of what I believe to be antifreeze burning. I've heard about this, and subaru's problems with headgaskets in the past.

My question is, assuming it's not just a leaky hose (haven't diagnosed that yet), and is actually a gasket, how balls deep do I want to go with this? Just replace the gasket, or take it to a specialist and get the engine fully rebuilt, cleaned and pretty?

I honestly know nothing about how the other parts on these engines hold up, so I figure, if it's at all likely that there is something wrong, or soon to be wrong, with the crankshaft, or anything else, I may as well bite the bullet and get it done now. This car has been great, and I'd love to keep it till 250-300,000.

Hey all

Got this deep-ass scratch on my car. Goes through the paint and serrated the panel itself a bit too. I messaged a detailer to see if he could do something, and all said and done he told me it would be $550 to fix it, detail the exterior, vacuum the interior, and apply a layer of CQuartz.
Am I getting ripped off? Should I just go to a body shop to get it fixed, or is a detailer fine?

it's 'polyester resin' filler. the parts atm i'm just filling so they don't come back, aswell to make it look like there hasn't been any rust there (it's in the floor area of car) so it looks better for when i try get it registered. they're in the interior too
is fibreglass filler best to use for any parts? i haven't used it yet, but the polyester one i've used is easy to shape and make it 'look' better, but i've read it's not as durable

People use polyester resin a lot to make shapes from moulds and so on for the reason of exactly that; being easy to shape. Not as solid as you'd want when put ontop of metal tho, especially metal that might corrode slightly more and make it lose the "grip" it has. I'd suggest going fibreglass

I've used Plastic Padding Fibreglass Filler in the past on other cars with good results, and currently using it to patch up my trailer before painting it over, and that shit is durable as all hell

It's the same idea, but diesels can handle much more boost because they don't suffer from knocking. 8psi is quite a bit for gas, I've seen semies running more than 50psi. Gas turbos need elaborate computer controlled waste gates and stuff for safety, diesels just have a simple mechanical nozzle.
The EMD-645 series locomotive engines have a nifty clutch-driven hybrid turbocharger setup, but that's a totally different thing.

If the compression is good and it's not using oil, the bottom end should be OK. On the other hand I think you have to pull the whole engine out to even do the heads on those cars, so you might as well at least have a look inside.

DOT5 is the only weird one, it's silicon based. Other than that a lower spec car can use higher spec oil. Just put DOT4 in both, it will not hurt the LS400 and you don't need to purge the old DOT3 if it's still clear.

Can cam timing being off a tooth cause a system rich code?

I have a shit 4.7 ram and I threw a new head on and it runs great now.

But after a while it throws a system rich code. At idle, the o2 sensor on the replaced head lags behind of the other a bit, meaning it is definitely rich.

I'll have to confirm the o2 sensor is Good and proper still, but it may be the cam timing or just a shit injector.

It runs perfectly, pulls hard as hell proper, but the exhaust note is a tad off at idle, but only system rich, no misfire codes

Today when I got into my car to drive home I got in the car, turned the key to the acc position and the wipers and all that came on (it was raining) but when I went to crank the car over all the electrics died immediately and wouldn't come back on even after trying a few times. I popped the hood, verified that the battery connections were good but didn't actually touch anything, and when I tried again the car started and all the electrics worked fine. Any ideas? Thought this was kind of weird, I wonder if I didn't get some water under the hood somehow. I also had a weird problem a few days ago where my head unit completely died and my seatbelt/handbrake light came on but the car kept running fine and that issue also fixed itself after a few seconds.

yea, i bought some fibreglass one today instead
so far i've only used the polyester one on spots where it's been penny size surface rust

with the spots rusting again, so far with polyester i've been using rust converter (with down to bare metal around the part, just bits in the actual rust spot still have a tiny bit of rust), then priming (and sanding it coarse) then putting the polyester over, then i was going to put primer again over that and put paint ontop.

with the fibreglass, do i just do the same except no primer before the filler? is there anything i should put on over the rust converter, and could the rust converter stuff interfere with the fibreglass filler (after it's dried)?
>>
>>15273945
>>15264688
also this primer is white kngiht rust guard all purpose which i only just used on 1 spot. the other spot before i used acrylic primer
i read to use acrylic primer online
>>
>>15273945
Nah, just put it right ontop of the rust converter. Just make sure the converter has properly dried

Use the filler as you normally would, and let it harden properly before sanding. Always use wetsanding last to get the surface as smooth as possible

twingo is great value for money in terms of equipment. You'll get sunroof, power windows, power mirrors, split rear seat, remote locking for the price of bonestock [put any shitbox here]
1200cc with 4 cylinders beats all 3 cylinder and 4cyl 1000cc base engines of competition. Reliable, economical, proper sound.
Easy to fix if you're skilled, cheap to fix if you're unskilled (like any other shitbox except obvious lemons)
So practical, can serve as only car in a family, including furniture shopping and vacational camping
Has actual devoted fanbase that is not a Stockholm syndrome support group
If you're cheap/poor twingo is basically your only chance to keep based instead of beeing cucked.

meme is a meme, but rational reasons are stronger

I'm looking for a new (to me) car right now and I'm considering getting a cheap miata to see if I enjoy manual cars. DDing a manual isn't bad in light traffic. Heavy traffic is a bitch but I usually just take the long way anyway. It's not impossible or anything, just gets tiresome. I'd say if you encounter more than 30 minutes of stop and go traffic per day you should consider having an automatic DD.

How would you approach tightening down lug nuts on a wheel of a vanilla 4 door sedan?

Just a lug wrench? A torque wrench so you can set the lugs at manufacturer specs of torque?

>>15278531
tighten them, incrementally, by hand (with a ratchet) tightly close to spec.
then put the car on the ground and torque them to spec with a torque wrench.
both in a star pattern.

if you know the torque spec, but dont have a torque wrench you should be able to get close to it just using your brain.
you know how long your ratchet is and you know what 60lbs or whatever it is feels like.

any big box store brand with a lifetime no question asked warranty is fine. go look at them, sears, lowes, homedepot, and hold them. craftsman is a perfectly fine choice for home use.

you can start with a basic 100-150 piece set that has all ratchets, sockets, deep sockets, and combo wrenches, screw drivers, etc dont go too big though, you only want the basics from these sets.

the rest you should buy as you need it / in small sets.

grab a cheap torque wrench, a breaker bar, plier set, and rubber mallet while you're at it.

that will be 90% of your tool base right there.

get some socket trays too, pic related. otherwise your shit will be everywhere.

Some temperature gauges are not linear, they stay in the middle over a fairly wide range of real temperature, then shoot up above a threshold. Makes the coolant system look better then it really is. It's not a big deal for it to be a bit low, but why not just keep it topped up?

Quite a bit less, the boot is shorter and the interior is about 4 inches narrower than the 9-5. The 9-3 sportcombi is still pretty big inside but the 9-5 estate is vast.
>>
>>15279179
It smell like it's running really rich, and the oil is black almost immediately after adding.
>>
>>15279202
Alright. Would the 9-3 still be ok for 3 adult (non-American :^)) passengers in the back? Or would it be a bit tight?
>>
>>15279172
How the fuck did that take 12 hours. Its like 10 bolts on any car and maybe 1 or 2 or are in extension only land
>>
>>15277246
OK less stupid question.

The top of my receiver is 19 inches off the ground, and the top of inner portion of the trailer hitch is about 15.5ish inches off the ground

If a 3 1/4 drop brings the top of the ball to right about the top of the receiver, 19 inches, does that mean I need a 6.5ish drop?

Or do I need to account for how much the trailer is going to lower my vehicle?
>>
>>15279258
Depends how far you're going, it'll be cosy for the one in the middle but I think you'd be OK
>>
>>15279411
I see I see. Planning on taking it on occasional camping/road trips. Not sure how often I'd end up with a full car then though.
Hang on

Australian? If so why can't I find a single 9-5 wagon past 2003?

>20 years of old oil/dirt mix forming an 1/8" layer all over
>trans housing blocks 2 blocks so had to use Dremel to grind down a sliver of housing to get smallest socket in there
>subframe blocking the oil pan from removal
>have to undo all of that

Fucking nightmare
>>
inherited one of these with 200k miles and $700 in fees owed.

Everything is in good condition except for the (auto) transmission, which is starting to overheat when driving long distances on hot days. It is closed and has no dipstick. I don't want to flush it in case there is shit in there holding it together

would swapping the transmission be a nightmare? should I just get rid of this ASAP?

Thank you for your time, I appreciate it.

What is the sportiest car I can get that comes with a tow hitch?

Looking to buy a car. Im young and my dad wasnt a big car guy so naturally I dont know much about cars either, and I need help.

I used blue books to punch in what I needed -- AWD/4WD, under 10,000$

I found a used 2007 Infinity M35 with 78k miles listing for 9k.

What would your opinion be about this situation? With the same constraints what would your decision be?

Early or mid 2000's Audi S4. AWD, available with a 6 speed manual and with a V8. I've seen a few with the B5 body style go for under $10k lately.

How much did you lower your car?

My 1988 Mercedes Benz 300E runs like shit under 2000rpm but above that it runs perfectly. What should I do in an attempt to fix this "feature"?

you can retrofit a towbar on most shit that comes with a proper big engine, vette included

most new big sedans comes with a towbar option aswell. saw a brand new M5 with one a few days ago. but those are fucking expensive aswell

Something in the shift linkage is fucked.

If I buy an aftermarket timing belt and water pump from a good brand, can I extend the service interval? I don't want to spend $500 every 60k.
>>
On my '05 Envoy the cruise just stopped working. I checked the brake lights and none of them are out. Is there a cruise control fuse? I took a look but nothing stood out. No errors on the OBDII either.
It's not even an intermittent thing, it just said 'I quit' and so it did.

I'm trying to find a replacement for my whole exhaust system on my citroen BX,
It's compromised of 3 parts:
-The tubing from the manifold to a horizontal silencer
-The horizontal silencer
-The end muffler

In the pic I've rounded down my choices for the part that goes from the manifold to the first silencer, is the thicker part of tubing I marked in red an expansions chamber? Why is it not present in the walker tubing?
What brand do citroëns OEM use?
What part will affect performance/sound?
Is this better/worse than straight tube?

Surprise surprise car makers often use many of the same suppliers as their rivals for parts
>>
>>15279405
I depends on what your carrying and how heavy, with some items like cars on flat bed trailers its better to have the trailer slanted back anyways, and your safety chains are going to hang down a bit anyways so it may just be better to keep the drop at a minimum

>>15278676
That's a question for a f150 focused forum, but my guess is no.

purely financially speaking, is it ever better to lease or buy a new car instead of buying a used one?

the argument being that maintenance on a used car will end up costing you more

>>

That's really only if it's a car that's guaranteed to have mechanical problems, it's more often than not better to get a beater toyota corolla or geo metro or something highly reliable. Leasing should never really have to be an option

What does it mean when your engine dies after starting say 1 out of every 10 starts, but you can start it back up again later? It still idles at normal RPM.

How can I learn to drive a stick if i don't know anyone who drives stick?
>>
>>15282866
Go to a dealer and hope they let you test drive, watch yt videos to learn the basics. Or go to a driving school
>>
>>15282866
Watch a video on youtube, read an article. When you buy it drive it around some suburb or empty parking lot. It takes maybe a couple hours of practice to be good enough to be safe in traffic.

The hardest part is going from a stop and taking off in first gear and if you ever fuck that up in traffic the worst that happens is people behind you get mad for all of 3 seconds it takes to try again.

Going to get my first relatively new car.

Been looking at honda civics, mitsubishi lancers and Mustang GTs, i'm pretty sure I'm outting the GT from the get go because of insurance costs.

What do you guys think is a good choice?

any recommendations?

here's a lancer i'm looking at.

So I was changing my timing belt, tensioner, water pump in my civic. For some reason I decided to take the tensioner off and forgot about it when I set my car to TDC. My cam gear is good, but my crank gear is off like 5 teeth. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Yeah, I know my shit is covered in oil, thats why Im changing the seals.
