That guy is making 185+ whp actually

Garage Quinn Motors is his YouTube channel

>>15255413
It's definitely not cost effective but it sounds damn nice. This guy built it more for fun instead of a power goal, he has another miata that is turbo. He wanted to see how much N/A power he could make on the stock bottom end.
>>
>>15255430
some idea of fun.
>>
>>15255430
could probably make 230+ with a full build.
>>
http://youtu.be/6s82wkYKtEY

I wanna try to turbo my Miata for cheap like this guy did but I don't wanna drill a hole into the engine for an oil feed is there some other way to do it?
>>
>>15255459
Yeah if it was bored/stroked/high compression on top of everything else

>>15255448
He's rich idk

>>15255467
90-94 have a preexisting port for the oil supply so you would only need to tap the oil pan for the return.

If you have a car built after that you can use a sandwich plate on the oil filter for the feed line or tee off the pressure sender.
>>
>>15255467
you will have to drill into the pan for the drain line.
you can probably use a single outlet oil filter block for the pressure line.

and as far as cheap builds, they are fine for the street and driving like a normie, but if you actually push your car that shit will fall apart.

it's not that expensive to just do it right.
>>
>>15255499
>you can probably use a single outlet oil filter block for the pressure line.
never do this. T off the oil pressure sensor instead.
>>
>>15255509
How come? Not enough oil pressure?

Already had Jackson Racing sway bars, but I bought the Flyin Miata stage 1 suspension for an NA6 with the Koni sports. They're on sale so I got a hell of a deal at 720 bucksish.

Anyone recommend some brakes? I want to get some bigger brake kit and after that I plan on doing power mods.

You could upgrade to 1.8 brakes or NB sport brakes. After that, all you need is good pads, some quality blank rotors, braided brake lines, and that's it.

How much power are you adding? Because unless you're tracking your car, brake mods are not crucial

What does anonymous know off the top of his head about NA8 lifter tick? I've had my 97 for a year and it just ticks sometimes. Some days it does, some it doesn't. Sometimes it does it when it's hot, sometimes when it's cold. Doesn't seem to impact performance, nothing leaks, just ticks. Different oils don't effect it either. I've seen people say not to worry about it, that it's no big deal and cleaning them is a hassle, but you know how people can be.

It is a hydraulic lash adjuster not actuating fast enough because of oil reasons and it is slapping between your cam and the valve. Clean them and it will stop until they get clogged again, don't clean them and it will happen until you clean them

I'd love to do an Itasha style wrap, but I don't know that much about weeb animes. If I had one and someone who actually knew about it came up to me and started talking, I'd kind of feel like an idiot if I knew nothing about it. The only one I really know about is Miharu from Girl's Bravo, which I would definitely do on my car. Don't know if the shop I'm going to would do it either. Part of me wants to just have all the paint work I need done and then do pic related, but I'd rather just change the whole color. Red was the last color I wanted when I was looking for a Miata.

Just get a giant vinyl of big fat cat tats across your hood and if anyone asks just be like I don't know I just like catgirls with giant tits, and then get a catback exhaust and the big fat catback sticker from the sticker general thread with the catgirl showing off her ass

You don't actually need to know anything about what anime the characters are from. If they're just anime girls with tits and ass, people will understand. You could theme you car and just do like anime catgirls or blondes or girls with glasses or monstergirls or whatever

Actual itasha is going to cost you a ton in giant custom vinyl so you're probably better off with putting weeb stickers on every window you can by just finding random anime pics you like and ordering smaller vinyls to go everywhere

It depends on the car.
Once the car is moving at some speed the hot exhaust air can be drawn back under the car along a pressure gradient if a strong enough one exists and literally suck cool air around the hood / through vents and with exhaust wrap the radiating heat may be less important than having a correctly tuned intake length.

For the timing belt there's tons of guides on Google and Youtube. But buy a repair manual anyway because going through outube videos while wrenching is cumbersome. Also stick extremely close to the instruction when reinstalling the harmonic balancer and torqueing the crakshaft bolt. You do not want to damage the threads in the crankshaft.

Retard question, but googling seems to be getting me nowhere.

is there any specific kind of quick release wheel boss/set that fits the MX-5, been looking at NRG stuff and cant seem to find anywhere that says it is or is not compatible with it, something about taking the wheel off when im done with the car appeals to me, also anti-theft
>>
>>15271684
pretty sure Momo quick release hubs fit
>>
>>15271684
You have to buy a miata specific hub if you want to use an aftermarket wheel. The hub will usually have two bolt patterns (Nardi pattern and momo) but you might need an adapter to fit your wheel depending on which hub you get.

I used a Daikei hub (which had both common bolt patterns) and a Personal wheel (which has a Nardi bolt pattern) and it bolted up fine.

How bad am I destroying my car by keeping it up there? It redlines at 7K so does that mean I can safely run it between 4-6 without making it blow up? What are the dangers of this? It's nice finally being able to enjoy my car and not think it's not a shitbox but it makes me nervous.

Also the exhaust has always sounded really high-pitched and buzzy unlike the other Miatas I've heard. Like really loud high pitched. I see that water leaks out where the pipe that goes from the cat meets the muffler. Is this an exhaust leak and could be causing this noise? Should I just replace it with a cheap ebay catback?
>>
>>15278741
You're not destroying it. Are you wearing stuff out faster? Yes, but you bought a Miats. It's a fun car that was meant to be driven this way. As long as you're not ripping it all day, everyday, even to the 7-11, you'll be fine. Maintain it, don't worry about it. And enjoy.
>>
>>15271684
Bruh. You need to buy a hub first before you get a quick-release. NRG does sell hubs for Mazdas, and you put the quick-release onto that. If you don't have power steering, you should probably stick with a wheel that's 350mm-360mm, but you won't get extra legroom if that's what you're after. If you get a smaller wheel, you should probably not buy the short hub as you might want the steering wheel extended a little more towards you as it can block your view of the gauges - my first Miata had a shitty generic eBae 320mm wheel (with no quick-release) that blocked my view of the top half of the speedometer/tachometer. Just something to consider. But yes there's a few guys in my club using NRG hubs/quick-releases.

If you have a factory exhaust it should be dead silent. If water is coming out of your exhaust then yes you have a leak. If you want to confirm pour some soapy water on the spot where you suspect a leak is and run the car. Any escaping exhaust will make the soap bubble up.

You're not destroying your car by reving it to the power band. Just keep up with the maintenance and you should be able to drive it hard regularly especially on a stock motor. All the previous owners of your car most likely have beat on it.

Okay guys I have a predicament. There is a bone stock soft top manual '91 Miata near me at a roadside dealership. It's not advertised anywhere and it's parked off to the side. There are very few things wrong with it. (Leaky radiator hose, needs some paint, radio). The guy said in its current state he was going to ask ~$2500 for it. Around here, that's a fucking deal. The few Miatas that are around me have big problems or are very overpriced. The next closest ones are three hours away in Chicago.

Now, I just got a new job. Literally just got my first paycheck today. I do not have the money for this Miata right now. Maybe in a couple weeks I will and I'll have to just pray my shitbox Sunfire stays alive and no one buys the Miata.

My question is, do I jump the gun and go for a bank loan to scoop this Miata up? He doesn't do financing or anything like that, he wants straight cash for it. I'm on the fence because if someone scoops this up before I get the money to, I know I'm gonna kick myself. I KNOW taking out a loan for a 25 year old Japanese sports car is a bad idea though. I know someone that has been working on cars for years so he could probably inspect it to make sure it's in the condition the dealer says it is, thus reducing risk.

I've been pining for a manual NA miata for a few months now and now that this opportunity has presented itself, I don't know whether to make the stupid decision or not.

Help.

Just do it. I don't know how much you make, but even if you don't make shit you should be able to pay off a 2500 loan in full in a couple months. Even if you have really shit credit, if it's really a better price than everything else you're good.

I bought a 90 this week and payed the dude $300 to drive it to me and it was still 2k less than anything local. Just do whatever makes the most financial sense in the long run.

I'm pretty for it and opposed to it at the same time. Part of me doesn't want to take a loan out for such an old car that is only a want and not a need right now and take on a debt I normally wouldn't have to.

The other part of me sees this as an opportunity I'd love to jump on before I miss my chance. I'd be genuinely disappointed if someone else bought it before me.

I make a comfy amount, especially with my living condition, and average over 50 hours a week. I'm not sure why I'm apprehensive about it? I know for a fact I'll be able to repay the loan pretty easily. I think it's kind of the 'stigma' (?) that loans have? And taking one out for this would be 'wrong'?

I'm going to go talk to the guy tomorrow and zero in on a more exact price and consider what I could do from there. Maybe if he just holds it for me that would be great. He's trying to sell things though and if I just don't show up again and other people come by to buy it and he denies them then he misses sales, so I'd understand if he refused to just hold it for me.

I'll see how I feel about this tomorrow.

I took out a $3500 loan for a motorcycle because my bank was being a dick about my funds and I payed it off literally the next day. Unless you get loans from a sketchy place most of them can be payed off early at no down side.

>>15283274
Taking a loan on a 20 year old car is completely retarded if the monthly payment puts a huge hardship on you. If it doesn't, who cares? People view loans way too negatively. If the car is $500 cheaper than any of the others around you that you'll be able to find when you do have the money, you'd have to have a really shitty interest rate to not come out ahead by taking the loan.

Spending way more without a loan isn't saving you money in the long run. If you find a really good deal take it while you can.
>>
>>15283430

Wow thanks a lot for your response. I didn't consider that I would still kind of come out ahead even if I did take the loan if I compare it to the few others in my area that I would inevitably have to choose from anyways.

Now do I lock down a price with the seller or do I just try to get the $2500 loan first and say "I have cash right now"? I feel like it could make sense to do it in either order? But I'm leaning towards discussing it with the guy first.
>>
>>15283481
i'd go with the loan now and say you have cash
you can keep what loan money you don't spend on the car

Don't take out an auto loan, for an amount so low you'll get shit financing offers. Apply for a personal loan for that amount, put $500 down and you should get a pretty low rate. Do it man, I was on the fence about mine but I bought it and never looked back
>>
>>15283663

Yeah I don't think they would give me an auto loan anyways, right? I don't see a bank/financing place saying "oh yeah sure here's money for a 25 year old car".

>>15283563

This kind of makes sense to me, but I'm afraid I'll have too little and he won't accept it. Then I'll have a loan to pay and some money and no Miata. Maybe that's alright though since I wouldn't be that far off from his price if that does happen. I can also sell my current shitbox for some money if I do get the Miata. Also I need to make sure on the off chance that he hasn't just sold it and they guy hasn't picked it up yet.

Just got this thing a couple days ago. It's my first car purchase, and the first Manual car I've ever driven. Took me all of 2 days to learn how to driver her, drift her, and race her. I've already won my first race against an NA, but I'm not really gonna be drifting or racing often. I love this car just as my daily driver, so I'll only punish her occasionally.

Wish I could have gotten an NA, but I couldn't pass up the deal on this NB. All in all, what do you guys think of 2k for a 172k miles, mechanically sound NB?
She's got some issues that need a little work, but it's mostly just minor inconveniences like the left window doesn't go down and the power steering/AC doesn't work(I don't mind the power steering, it's actually kinda nice, but god dammit I need my AC here in texas.)

Gonna be going to Richardson to pick up a cute girl that's down here with her sister to visit my buddy from work tomorrow, so I'm glad I got this car when I did. I don't really want to be driving my mothers 2012 Ford Escape anywhere anymore, and the Excursion drinks too much gas to do anything in.
>>
>>15285150
Oh yeah and the only thing wrong with the power steering/AC is the belt broke. I've already bought a new one to put on tomorrow, but I'm gonna go talk with my mechanic(Conveniently enough, also the guy I bought this from) about how I'd get the AC to work, but not the power steering. Mainly just because I like the power steering gone, it gets me more in touch with the car and feels great, but I've heard it drains power, and I kinda need all of that I can get, even if I don't take advantage of it often.

I have a low whine noise that sounds a bit like a belt when I'm at about 1500 rpm in first gear, but anything above that seems fine.

Power steering uses almost no power unless you're in a parking lot cranking on the wheel. At most it saps 2-3 hp when you're really cranking on it. If you really don't want power steering, you should do a proper delete
>>
>>15289852
Ah sweet. I really don't like it though, so I may just get rid of it. I took some 30mph corners today at 60 or 70 and it just didn't feel as fun. I liked feeling what my front wheels were doing, and having to put some force into the wheel.

I've got bigger problems right now though.. Flashing check engine light is on, and I got the code read. It was p0300 or something, dealing with multiple misfires. I can't get my mechanic to fix it until next weekend though, because I'm broke as shit trying to pay 200$ a week to get this car payed off in less than a month.
I haven't been able to stop driving her since I got her, it's really upsetting that I can't take her out anymore.

Early NBs are notorious for the coil packs going out. I don't recommend replacing the coil with another oem one. Fab9 sells a coil on plug conversion kit that is $300 and has way more longevity than OEM. It's plug and play too
>>
>>15290944
is that 300$ for everything I need to replace what's in it?
I'm not that experienced with fixing cars. My NB is the first car I've worked on myself, so that being said is this a job I can do myself at home?

>>
>>15291014
Awesome man, thanks. I'm gonna talk with my mechanic, and if he thinks that's the issue I'll drop the money when I've got it.
I'm so impatient about getting her fixed because I honestly can't stop driving her. The only things that can keep me out of that seat is lack of money for gas, or something goes wrong with her. Miatas are something special.
>>
Being 6' 4" I wasnt sure I would fit in a Miata so I went to a local Mazda dealership to test drive and sit in a ND. My legs were a bit cramped (consistently brushing against the wheel) but my headroom was OK. I'm too much of a poorfag to get a new ND though, so can anyone with the experience tell me if the NA/NB seating dimensions are similar?
>>
>>15291664
NA's pretty much the same, especially with a foamectomy, NB is slightly worse. The really bad part about room in a NB is the fucking doors. My knee always bumps into the fucking door handle and unlike the NA, you can't easily swap in a new door card. That and the retarded gearing is why I no longer have a MSM and now have a blue NA6.
>>
>>15292079

If it was flat on the NB then my 6'2" non lanklet self would have more room. I took of the door panel to grease the window motor and sat in it and thought fuck wish i could just leave them off.
>>
>>15292079
Elaborate further on the retarded gearing
I thought NBs were practically fixed head light NAs. Is that just a MSM thing?
>>
>>15292193
MSM has a 6 speed and a 6500 rpm redline. NA has a 5 speed and 7000 rpm redline, but fuel cut is at 7200. Non MSM NB has either a 5 or 6 speed and 7000 rpm redline.

The reduced redline of the MSM plus the short ratio 6 speed makes for a really weirdly geared car with a lower top speed than the normal NB and bad freeway manners.

there are some NC owners that post

spring and shocks go so much farther for the NC than sways, especially for a daily

the stock springs/shocks are tragic honestly, and sways on stock suspension is weird on the NC, it doesnt do as much as you'd think because the dampers are just that bad

love the copper red btw
>>
>>15293604
Normally the sway bars are the first mod to do on the NC, right? I dont have money to purchase new coilovers, but I would have some to get the Tein springs to install them on the stock Bilstein suspension, would this be better or I should save for new coilovers?
>>
>>15293717
NEVER put aftermarket springs on fixed dampers, as a different rate and height can fuck things up. Coilovers is by far a better option, buy a set of Meister R.

Just installed H&R swaybars on my NB, car feels very direct and it feels like the body needs more stiffness now. Raced some old blue Audi wagon, he had no chance what so ever in the corners, but smoked me on the straights, as expected.

i'd say the first thing is usually coilovers/ springs& shocks or exhaust.

those 17s look great with 5mm spacers all around & a lower ride height

yea the teins are too low for their spring rate and will rape your dampers
i have an old set of tein springs in the shed that did that to my NC

this to be honest
>>
>>15293989
Thanks, I will go for the Meister R coilovers after the new sways (i already give my word to the guy whos selling them to me) and probably after that the exhaust, personally I wont use spacers, I also have a Impreza STi and the guy that I bought the car from had installed the spacers, they messed up with everything (they werent so height), so I think I will pass with that.

Around $4-5k if you get an FM kit, with shipping. You're not gonna run boost higher than 12psi with that option though, expect 200-250 hp at best. I'd personally aim for around 180hp for reliability. You really should look at forged internals for 200hp+ on the stock block.

QLD. That's my plan right now, got a bunch of mates who are into MX5s who usually hit me up when there are good deals just seeing what other options there are. Not really in a rush so i'll probably wait for a cheapy $7-800 one to pop up one of these days.

Because the hardtop looks bulky, so if you paint the hardtop + a-pillars, you will notice the low bodyline more and less of the bulky bubble on top.

Yeah, I've actually been looking at these konigs in 15x7, but can't justify the purchase yet though. I'm currently at the cheap/free mods phase, once I save up a bit roll bar, coilovers, and rims are next

How much would it cost to get the zipper on my softtop fixed? The top is too tight and the zipper is not aligned. Where can I take it, an upholstery shop?

I think your numbers are a tad conservative, honestly. Stock internals are good to ~260-280 if you don't beat on the thing all the time. I'm pushing about 9.5 PSIG (stabilized, spike to right at 10 if I slam the throttle down above 3800RPM or so) and it just fukken goes. FM Hydra kit (serial port? Really? But whatever, it works I guess.), GT2560 turbo, intercooler, oil cooler, blah blah. This is on a NB2 1.8L.

That's the crank angle sensor, cas. The one you need to replace is this one, it's a 5 minute job. Front of the engine, to the left.

No prob, it's a pretty common mistake since cps can be either crank or cam position sensor. Good luck with the fix, it's a $40 part, so you should be fine
