Hey guys, I know you're not my personal mechanics but I need advice.

I just graduated highschool, and I've been looking around for cars that I can buy for cheap that look/run decent. I've rested my gaze on the 2002 Audi A4, it has everything I want in a car. It's aesthetically pleasing, it looks pretty new for its year, and it's got a nice sound to it.

I found a deal on craigslist, and I want to know if you guys think its worth it. It's a 2002 Audi A4, 5 speed manual transmission. Has 294000 kms from highway driving, and the guy is selling it for $2200 (Canadian)

I've sent him an email since and he says hes a mechanic and he's taken care of it, says there are no issues with it mechanically or physically.

Is it worth it? What are some things I should look out for? I know this is super cheap of me but since Im young, what is a good way I could get him to bring the price down for me?

Thanks a lot in advance

If you can only afford $2k DO NOT BUT A USED GERMAN CAR.
I REPEAT
DO
NOT

>>
>>15247891
It's a used entry level luxury model. An A to B shitbox that likes the taste of premium fuel and costs an arm and a leg for parts.

It isn't worth it.
>>
>>15247909

I only want to put 2000 on the car itself. I still live with my parents and everything so I dont really have any financial burdens to worry about as of now. Plus Im working, so I can afford maintenance and whatnot as long as it's not TOO hefty.

Yeah? No?

>>15247953

Here in Vancouver, used and "for-parts" Audi A4s are all over the market, so finding parts shouldnt be too bad. Not to mention, I've never crashed or damaged a car, so parts isnt a very big concern to me. I just need something that I can daily drive while not looking like a poorfag.
>>
>>15248016
read the following word carefully.
don;t.
>>
>>15248016
>I just need something that I can daily drive while not looking like a poorfag
So you picked a used entry level luxury model. Nothing screams "I'm a poorfag trying to look well-off" like used entry level luxury.
>>
>>15248039
>>15248031

Okay, then what kind of car do you guys recommend?
>>
>>15248059
Some new boring A to B car, as opposed to an old one. That puts you in the safe "remarkably average" bucket. Are you looking to look like a regular person or do you want people to think you've got cash?

Saabs are selling for really cheap, and the B235 engines are bulletproof as long as they've had regular synthetic oil changes and PCV updates (pre-2004 model years)
>>
>>15248085

I want to be somewhere in between. I don't care to look rich, but I want people to look at my car and think "okay, that's a pretty nice car", even if it means doing some modding. Plus, $2000 doesn't give me many options.

>>15248086

If you ever catch me in a civic, just cut my penis off and shove it down my throat, because that'll be the rock-bottom point in my life.

>>15248105

Ehh, no one sells saabs here in Vancouver.
>>
>>15248191
Kill yourself. A civic is what you need. There's nothing wrong with it besides no having much passing power.
>>
>>15248292
Just say no to Civics. Unless it's an Integra GS-R.
>>
>>15248292

On a trip to the grocery store (which is 2km from my house) and back, I counted 37 civics. They're the most poorfag cars to ever be created. I don't want it.

Kys op. Noone is ever going to look.at your $2k and be impressed. For $2k you should just be happy that people don't throw up when they see it. As others said, an old a4 makes you look like a poor tryhard, and they are a bucket of shit.

anon's are unfortunately right

Audi auto boxes of the era are unreliable, and from my knowledge only the 1.9 TDi and 1.8T are in any way reliable.

Mine is the 2.5 TDi V6, pic related is what happened when the fuel pump took a shit, and thats in pounds (UK).
>>
Watch out for sludge.
Parts are expensive.
Control arms go bad.
Coolant flange breaks.
B6 looks really dated these days. Pic related. My B6.
>>
>>15248337

Set the price limit to 2000 and see the difference.

>>15248338

"even if it means doing some modding". There are super basic cars for 2k that you can mod and make look decent.
>>
>>15248191
Jesus fucking Christ you are the epitome of a stupid entitled kid. You have $2,000 to spend and you'd piss on a Civic, which is all you can really afford.

Buy a used jap car that isn't beat to hell. Keep it stock, keep it clean and keep it running well. NO ONE gives a shit what you drive as long as it isn't some clapped out shitbucket. Work and save your money to buy something good later on.

Or you can ignore everyone in this thread and buy that used up Audi. Frankly, I hope you do just so you know what it feels like to fuck up so badly so early in life and maybe, just maybe learn a little humility.
>>

No, there isn't. You will look like a poor fag who tarted up an old banger heap of shit. People may look, but they will be looking out of pity.

>>
>>15248809
Nothing wrong with an Audi. Just an old, piece of crap base model isn't very impressive or reliable.
>>

Nothing wrong?

How about, being nothing more than rebadged VWs with an upmarketed price tag for fools like OP that want to "look rich"?

>>15247891
lol dude...no.
>>
>>15248841

Im not implying. Its reality.

Vast majority of audis are plain vws with different clothes. Only a small percentage has been made to received exclusive engines has to pertain the idea to the plebs that audis are exclusive. And that small percentage is nowhere near significant in the whole number of audis circulating.

So nah, they're not special in any way and in 99% of cases they're nothing more than a vw with a different set of panels and plastics.

Which some entitled schmuck was tricked into buying thinking it was special.
>>
>>15248862
I never said they were special. They are nice cars though. And plenty are different to vws.
>>
>>15248881

No.

Plenty are not different to VWs.

Plenty are exactly the same car underneath the metal and plastic with a different format.

The perceived "niceness" is pure marketing ingrained in your mentality.

Any other product that had the same characteristic without the same amount of marketing audi had and you would refuse to pay a cent more for a "fake" superior product, which as it turns out is exactly the same.
>>
>>15248895
dude don't try to explain to an audi owner how their cars aren't on the same tier as bmw or merc. we all know.
>>
>>15248910

You may know. And good for you. A large number of others don't and act as if they're somehow superior.

I'm yet to realize, having owned vags and working with vag cars for a life, what makes some people truly think audis are in any way even comparable to mercedes.
>>
I'm not sure why people have a hard on for low level beemers and mercs either. The compressor mercs were shit. 4 banger BMWs are shit and leak oil like its going put of fashion. i had to do timing chains and vvt gears in a 2012 turbo 4 banger merc the other day, with impeccable service history.
>>
>>15248921
marketing and leather famalam.
>>15248932
That I don't get either. In the US at least all they ever gave us was the 318 and BMW quickly learned that was a mistake. The kompressors permanently ruined Mercedes image for me.
>>
>>15248387

>epitome of a stupid entitled kid

Dude, I just want to buy myself a decent looking car, I don't know why the fuck you're sweating so hard. If I was "entitled", I'd have been complaining about how $2000 isn't enough to buy a decent car (oh wait, that's exactly what YOU'RE doing, you halfwit.)

I happen to give a shit about what I drive. I have friends that I meet up, and summers coming so I'm gonna be meeting broads that I don't want to be picking up in a fucking 2002 honda civic, thank you very much.

We've established the fact that I won't buy the audi. I'm just asking for some alternatives that are at least decent looking cars with some luxury to them.
>>
>>15249587
None, you retard. You have $2k, by a reliable Japanese shitter. Anything else will make you look like a tryhard loser. Girls don't give a fuck what car you have anyway.
>>
2001-2004 audi petrol engines often do that thing that we call "inhaling false air" which is noticed by it running unevenly. Very common, check for that. Oil ventilation tube can freeze up in winter leading to a buildup of pressure and sudden loss of oil.
Always check alignment and breaks.

The 1.9 diesel is the best buy. The 2.5 TDI is a death sentence.
>>
>>15249874
This. My dad had a A4 1.9 tdi for 12 years and never had a problem. My first car was a 2004 golf IV with the same engine, torquey enough and runs fucking fine. Virtually nothing to do on that engine.

Used to own one for 4 years, pic related, 2.5 tdi fwd
Power steering leaked badly, coolant was slowly dripping somewhere, car had some weird camber issues which was wearing my tyres out, worn bushings etc, and the worst thing - the multitronic tranny failed
Not worth it desu, i'd suggest a BMW E36 or E46 for simillar prices

Buy Ford, GM, Dodge, Toyota, or Honda. You don't sound like you can afford high end maintenance.

"nice looking" is all aesthetic. You should buy a car based not only its looks, but most importantly it's functionality and cost of repairs. An anon earlier showed what he had to pay when his fuel pump went. If you had a vehicle of the ones I presented, you would've paid1/4th that price.

German cars can be reliable, but they need to be taken care of THEIR ENTIRE lifespan to make that true.

>>
>>15252365
Girls genuinely don't give a shit about your car as long as it's not disgusting or unless it costs six-figures. And even in the case that they do like your car, that's just the foot in the door; you can do the same thing by just dressing nice.

And for two grand you're not gonna be able to get anything fancy that won't run you thousands in repair bills. You should get a decent condition Corolla/Civic or a less-than-decent condition Lexus. You have only two grand and this is your first car. Buy a commuter car, and then later when you can afford something nice, buy something nice.

Also, those Audis are junk. Unreliable and no more luxurious than the Passats they're rebadged from.
>>
>>15248921
>vag cars
>>
>>15249587
So you want to impress girls. Different ballgame now, son. The car won't score you any more points but you can still lose them in this round.

Clean is king, here. Discarded food packets and shit will put chicks off. A filthy shitbox will not impress, either. Your 240SX rice rocket might be cool to Miguel and the lads, but girls just see an old deathtrap. The A4 would be suitable here, if you could afford to maintain it. The previous owner is a mechanic, meaning he isn't bled as hard since he can wipe his own ass. A cleaner, newer Camry or something would be just as effective in this round.
>>
>>15252576

You seem to have forgotten that I've just turned 18. Meaning I'm pulling chicks 16+, and they're not crackwhores either lmfao. My friend owns a 94 325i and they're digging it just cause it's a BMW. As long as it has brand name and it roars, they fall for it.

>>15252614

I guess when it comes down to it, I could possibly get myself a clean civic or an accord, but N E V E R a corolla. Corollas are like the ugliest cars ever invented in my opinion (yes, uglier than the Pontiac Aztek and the PT Cruiser.) They just scream "IM A CHINESE LEARNER DRIVER", especially in vancouver.

>>15252808

But I can't really get a newer camry with $2000. My friend drives a 2014 camry and it looks nice, but the thing costed him 22 grand. The thing I don't understand is, aside from basic maintenance fees that come with EVERY car, what's so bad about owning a german car? Like I understand sometimes parts wear out because of usage, but unless I actually pull off some stupid shit, won't the car run fine?

Fun engine to drive. Great noise (for a diesel), good mpg, loads of character and the torque makes it feel fast even though it certainly is not, but complete dog shit on the reliability front.

Seems like every time anything goes wrong you need to take the whole front of the car off.

Almost 300.000 km. for something that isn't an enthusiast car that has been carefully looked after is a disaster waiting to happen. I like the A4 but let's be honest, it's just an european shitbox with absolutely no chance of being either a classic or an investment, so people just do basic maintenance to keep it more or less running and that's it.

If you want an A4, the B5 looks far less dated and is arguably much prettier. Since it's "older" you can find them cheap so you have money to spare. If you want petrol, go for the 1.8 Turbo because NA 1.8 is as slow as a fucking turtle and, the rest of the bigger engines are just shit. If diesel go for the 1.9 TDI. Don't even go fucking NEAR a 2.5 TDI or you're gonna kill yourself.

Nevertheless, if you spend only 2k on an euro luxury sedan, set aside another 3-4k for the next two years. If you've taken good care of it after that, it will probably only be general maintenance for quite some time.

I'm not an ugly autist, but in this day and age, your looks are only the entry to whether or not you're attractive. An attractive guy can go from an 8/10 to a 6/10 if he drives a corolla. That's just how it is, I don't make the rules, nor do I think it's fair.

If you honestly think that the car you have is the only factor in pulling hoes, you are sorely mistaken.

This is coming from someone who is just a year older than you are, you'll learn soon son.

Based on having read this entire thread, I can tell you without a doubt that anything you find that is both

>within your price range
>appealing to you

IS WITHOUT A DOUBT TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

But you're going to rationalize buying something that will turn out to be a giant pile of shit / pain in your ass.

Might as well stop wasting time and get it over with.
>>
>>15253316

Of course not, as of now I'm not looking for a girlfriend. I just need a summer car so I can pick up a couple of chicks for a night and then move on and never talk to them again. After summer ends and I get into university, I'll settle down for a decent chick.

This might be a good place to start:
http://www.hondaproblems.com/trends/transmission-failure/

The 2000-2004 models are affected by the recall and the one you linked is a 2005, so it may not be affected, but it's still quite risky.
>>
>>15253328

Not really, no. I'm finding lots of cars but I'm taking my time to find one that's ideal. I just bookmarked a mint 2004 Mazda 3, a 2004 G35, and a 2000 Prelude.

I'm picky because I have time to dealhunt. I wont be buying a car til maybe a month from now, just keeping my options open and seeing what kind of cars I can find.

>>15253337

That was informative. Thank you.

My brother is mechanic and he literally says audis are overpriced vws. He works with them and knows them in and out. Thanks to him i realized that my favorite car (s5) is no more. You can buy the SAME vw parts for like up to 5 times less if you know where.
Even bentley use vw parts here and there. But the audi is the epitome of it. Its pretty much the worst car brand you could get for the money
>>
>>15253370

Volkswagen Jettas are ALL over the market here, but I can't get over how fucking ugly the headlights are.
>>
>>15253378
Which generation? I know the 4th gen Golf and Jetta/Bora have interchangeable front ends.
>>
>>15253227
If they're impressed by an E36 it's probably the badge. And that evaporates the moment they figure out its a 90s model.

I know the game you're after well. The "car grrrrls" are impressed by two doors and sloppy shifting. They also think a RX-8 has a piston engine. The prospective gold diggers think a BMW means money. And the average girl? Well, you're right about ugly shitboxes. Plain, clean and reliable is the course of action there. Trying not to fuck up, as opposed to trying to impress. Of course, if you're attractive enough lots of shit is overlooked. A mate of mine manages fine in an econobox Hyundai of some sort. Another is still a gibbering autist in his newer A4.

>Mint

That's why I prefaced my post by saying I had read the entire thread.
You don't have the knowledge or experience it would require to know whether or not this is true.
Both craigslist and almost any car lot are full of TIME BOMBS.

Being told that the car is in fantastic condition is NOT a good indication that it ACTUALLY is. You could buy a car with severe frame damage because you don't know how to identify poorly done bodywork.

Don't even get me started on things that wouldn't even be seen by a mechanic you paid to inspect a car before purchasing it.
EVERY USED CAR PURCHASE DONE BY ANYONE is a gamble on the part of the person buying it, and the odds are not in your favor at all.

so again,

IF YOU LIKE THE CAR, that's almost a guarantee you shouldn't buy it.

Good luck bud :)

>>15253387

1st-4th gen are all hideous.

>>15253389

LOOL see I like you. Yeah, economic cars are doable, but the only time you'll find a nice looking econobox is when it's like a 2013+. For example, I wouldnt mind driving a 2014 sentra, but a 2003 sentra is disgusting.

>>15253408

Gee, thanks man.

>>15253420
How about a Saab? Unique enough to be cool, old enough to be cheap, nice and helpful community, strong engines, and pretty comfy.
>>
>>15253446
Saabs are decent, but there aren't really any cheap ones on the market here. They usually sell for 4500-ish.
>>
>>15253472
Ouch, where I live (on the other side of the Atlantic, granted) they're like the cheapest, most prevalent interesting cars and they frequently dip below 2k.
>>
>>15253485

Yeah, I mean here in Van, it's only rich asians and white people who drive BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes, so you usually don't find any of the older cars (that aren't riced as fuck)
>>
>>15253370
And what, praytell, is the vw equivalent of an s5? I'm a mechanic also, but your brother is a fag.

So many shitters in here that don't realise not every single Audi is a rebadged VW

There are shit Audis and there are good ones. Basically if its a model that gets Haldex rather than Torsen its just a fancy VW.

I'll accept that theres no such thing as a reliable Audi however.

OP, if you're in Vancouver, have you considered a Volvo? RWD, turbo, can be cheap enough to run (subjectively to a fucking early '00s Audi), and can haul all the bitches you need in comfort.

>>
>>15253654

It's too old looking for me. When I say I want a clean looking car, I mean I want something that's pretty new at least. That car is pretty far from new.
>>
>>15253217

I'm really going to regret to writing all this out for you when you turn around and don't listen to a single word. If you want a old ass Audi that you'll fight your parents over when you try to stick them with 1500$ repair bill, be my guest. But since you're talking about what makes you "cool" and what's going to help you get girls, I'll let you in on the secret: girls are easy. Yup. All of them. That holy vaginal cavity you've put on a pedestal? They start handing that shit out for pizza and beer the second they turn 20, cause they realize their time is short and women age worse than men. That's my theory anyway.

But back to the main point man, 2000 bucks in Canadian isnt worth gerble shit. You obviously haven't looked around the used car market at all if you think you're getting a "nice" car for that kind of money. Anybody that sells you an Audi, ANY Audi, is trying to fleece you with a falling apart piece of shit.

Another bit of advice about buying used cars: dealers and most people are pieces of shit. The guy that tells you he's a mechanic and all the miles are highway doesn't even change his fucking oil and is trying to offload his debt. Some of those guys are legit but you need to be sensible and match up the value of the car with the price.
>>
>>15253677

At this point I want to explain to you it's not even worth buying a car for 1500$ US. But it is worth it if you are really smart and only buy something in great condition. Hard to find for 1500 bucks. You should save 4 or 5k to be in the level of car that you want. You know what people charge for their fucking 2006 civics? Dude, you literally have blue book value for like 2000 model civic. You said you were looking at a Mazda 3 and somehow that's more luxurious? It's a the same shit in that price range anon! It'd econobox jap shit, they even share the same parts! No girl is watching you cruise by in a fucking Mazda 3 going "DAMN I am so WET right now, good thing he doesn't drive a Corolla" a car universally lauded as better Japanese economy car in every way.

Girls care if you can buy THEM some shit, anon. Some good food, a movie, a concert. The car isn't gonna help you that much man. Being responsible with your money will get you a lot farther. I'm 23 and trust me man shit hasn't changed on this front.

There's also the 850 and 1st gen V70, which are FWD but come with an awesome sounding inline 5 engine. They also look a bit more modern than the 940.
>>
>>15253688
>>15253677

LOOOOOL I fucking loved every second of reading this. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. However, its not only about the girls. It's also about how I feel driving the car. I want something that feels good to drive and that I can actually enjoy driving. I'm more likely to get that from a Mazda 3 than from a Corolla. I'm willing to compromise for reliability, but like not too far.

>>15253690

Ehhhh, still. It looks like something an old man would drive. Not to mention the whole wagon look isn't exactly my thing.
>>
>>15253723
Yeah, it does look like a brick on wheels, which is quite fitting because they're tanks, but I can see how some people don't like it.
Wagons are based as fuck though, similar handling to a sedan but a fuckton of room to haul shit.

Also, if you can find them, the Audis from before they had letters in their names (80, 90, 100, 200) can be had with near indestructible inline 5 engines. It's just that everything around the drivetrain fails over time. Those are the only ones I would outright recommend, because muh rally heritage.
>>
>>15247891
They use plastic propellers for water pumps which is so stupid since Camrys have steel blades
>>
Ok I just got rid of my b5a4. I've been an Audi and BMW for a while now. Let me tell you HOW IT WILL go. Timing belt, water pump, tensioners better be done with plenty more miles and paper work from a reputable shop. Or you'll have to save up to have that done. That's at least 800-1000 USD. Control arms. Fuel pump, ( I ran into a gas station one day and came out and car wasn't running, fuel pump died ), wheel bearings, tie rods, CV axles, o2 sensors. I could literally go on. Audis are great and fun cars BUT, you will get drained throwing money at it, and b6 Audis are just at that age where everything and I mean everything will need to be replaced. Like everyone is saying GET A CIVIC or some cheap car. Better yet a Toyota. This seller is selling you a bucket of problems. "I'm a mechanic" is code word for i don't know shit. I bet he doesn't even know the timing belt service interval for this car. Also another thing about Audis is they are a total pain to work on. I have an e46 325 which I can do most thing on, my Audi, either needed to be on a lift. Or put into service position, which means the whole front end gets ripped off so you can access things most people with other cars can.... Without tearing the front end off. Pass up on this. Don't go buy a BMW either that too will take all your money. My A4 was fun, but over two years of owning that particular one I'd say it literally spent 4 months of those two years not on the road due to repairs. Most people never take care of them so at 165,000 miles you're taking stuff off that was from the factory.
>>
>>15253794
very rugged quattros indeed. Those old ones can take beatings most cars can't
>>
>>15249587
Tbh OP here in my town people are all trying to look rich and we were ranked the poorest city in USA. My drives a 2002 Black Audi A4 1.8t and bitches think he's loaded (he's drug lord son)

Oh fuck, that's actually super clean. I found a 1999 Solara for $1899. That's perfect.

I also found this. http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/rds/cto/5623173116.html

What do you guys think? Aside from that, what are some good, cheap, 4 seater convertibles I can look for? Should I even get a convertible?
>>
>>15255724
>Z31
Will drive you mad to work on even in its N/A trim. This would be hair-pulling enough to consider the A4 a sensible choice.

>Should I even get a convertible
Well you won't be doing any racing in it. Might be fun in summer or something.
