I'm going to check out the bike later today.

Anything specific I should look out for?
How about mileage and timing chains and shit like that.
I can't ride yet so I won't be able to drive it.

There's not really much that goes into maintaining them. Look up how a side-draft or CV carb works and you'll get the general idea. Here's a diagram.

It's not the exact same but you should be able to figure out how it works if you actually tear into them. Just remember:

Flooding out generally means your floats died. They're plastic and since ethanol is in all gasolene now they get eaten away over time. They're like $15 to replace.

Running lean usually means gummed up jets (holes from the fuel bowl into the little tube that runs into the engine). This can usually be fixed by draining the float bowls (there's usually drain plugs on them) and spraying them with carb cleaner until the bowls are roughly half full. Then just prime the fuel system again and run it until it stops running like shit.

That should fix virtually all carb issues. If none of those work then you need to actually tune the fuckers. This can entail a multitude of things:

>Float height adjustment.
You'll need a tool to measure this. Every shop manual tells you the procedure.

>Idle A/F screw adjustment
These are usually covered up by little caps with a hole in them. Drill them out and put a wood screw in, then grab screw with pliers and pull out the cap.

Turning the screw out richens A/F mixture at idle, turning screw in leans out A/F mixture.

>Carb sync
This consists of you setting up the carbs so that all the butterfly valves open at the same time on every cylinder.

There's two ways to do this. You can either use vacuum gauges (there's a million different ways to get these. You can buy a $900 set of testers or make your own), or you can do like I do in my half-assed garage mechanic way and bench sync them, which basically consists of using something like a feeler gauge and setting them up so they all open the same.

Congrats, you're now a carb wizard.

Cheers mate.
>>
>>15242538
>forgot pic

Also, make sure the rubber pieces that connect the carb to the airbox and the engine aren't cracked or leaking air. If they are then your A/F mixture will be thrown off, your fuel will not feed correctly if it uses a vacuum-fed petcock, and your fueling will be atrocious because it'll fuck up the air velocity in the venturis.

If you have trouble getting the rubber tubes back on (as expected, they're a bitch), I suggest the same thing I use to put my dick into your mom's ass: Vaseline.

KY Jelly also works since it's meant for use with sex toys and thus won't fuck up the rubber.

>If you want one then import a CBR250RR from Japan or Australia
I'd love to do that, but the only information I can find about importing is "lol it's hard and expensive." Surely there are people who know the legal framework who can wade through the bureaucracy properly and reasonably quickly.

I see old 250RRs for sale in places like ausfalia and NZ for hilariously cheap. Like 2000 USD cheap. I've already got that in my 300R as it is. Some ZX2Rs are kicking around too, it seems.

I don't know why I'm so in love with the idea of a tiny, tiny I4. The sound they make is just fucking gorgeous. Will the NTSA even allow these to be imported? Where do I start?

I have a question for hopeful gurus of /o/.

I've taken a course on biking, and I have a few friends with many years experience riding.I've heard some contradictions about something;
Which way do you point the handlebars when you're leaving your bike.

Course said all the way left, and yank the bike back to ensure stand is down. Supposedly making the bike as low as possible, and spreading weight out as even as possible.
Also been told that you should point slightly right cause bike is most stable when upright.
I understand that on certain inclines, you should not point bars downhill. I'm uncertain about this all now.

so tl;dr,
which way do you point handlebars when you're leaving your bike?
>>
>>15242693
Whichever the fuck you want. It really doesn't make a difference. If the kickstand is going down the kickstand is going down. Bar position isn't gonna do shit to save it.
>>
>>15242693
On my bike it doesn't really matter. Straight or to the left depending on the spot. Never to the right though unless it's in the garage and I need to get by it in a tight spot.

If it's 25+ years old its just a bit of paperwork and whatever fees which is easy enough. 15 years if you're a canuck. You'll probably have to ensure it has correct emissions equipment for equivalent release date and you'll have to swap out the gauges.

The biggest hurdle is actually shipping it here, because it's expensive as fuck. Cars are around 5k~ish minimum to ship, so motorcycles may or may not be cheaper depending on the importer. Insuring it might be a pain in the ass as well, so keep that in mind.

One thing is that she is quiet top heavy not sure if that will make a difference
>>
>>15243425
Might I ask where you are? I'm setting off very early to avoid rain on the pass so I can make a detour and still get to Aosta in time for tea.

What are the limits of engine braking? Like how can I know how much I can engine brake before the rear locks? Is there some graph somewhere or do I just learn it with each bike?

>>
>>15243807

you blip the throttle while downshifting and then you can engine brake by keeping the throttle closed. Or do you want to brake with the clutch lever???LIke downshift 5 gears and break by enganging the clutch??

are you retarded?
>>
>>15243813
>Explain to me exactly how you think engine breaking will lock the rear wheel.
If you drop a gear or two you can lock the rear wheel.
>>
>>15243837
It doesn't lock though, it merely spins slower than the bike is moving.
>>
>>15243837
>dropping one or two gears gives you a piston seizure

'no'
>>
>>15243813
Well, I am a beginner so forgive me if it sounds retarded, but I was taught in MSF that it's fairly easy to lock up the rear wheel if I engine brake too harshly. So I want to know what the recommended RPM range is for engine braking
>>

you were taught bullshit desu senpai
>>
>>15243412
>Implying the gs500 is shit
As a learner it's pretty great.
Even once you get off it's fairly decent.
>>
>>15243848
I don't think you understand the concept of engine braking.

It's not an extra brake, it's just the force of squishing air inside the cylinder(s) slowing the bike down.

If you close the throttle the bike slows down, that's engine braking.
>>
>>15243848
it varies greatly from engine to engine. just go try it and get a feel for it.

I am a new rider and this morning I was driving around this vast parking lot of an abandoned Sam's Club, popping over curbs, parking blocks, making turns around 20mph and annoying the the camper-travelers and long-haul truckers and hobos camped there. I was constantly slipping a rear wheel on broken glass or used condoms and shit.

How to increase one's confidence in taking corners? I feel like I take corners during normal driving really slow, faster then cars do, but still sedate. When I tried pushing what I thought were my limits, I always feel like I'm gonna lose traction if I lean too hard and wipe the fuck out. I had to stick a foot out to catch me from dropping the bike hitting broken piles of malt liquor bottles and slimy grocery bags and shit.

No really, find a backroad route or like some rural roads where there isn't much traffic and just ride them. The best way to get confidence in corners is to do them.

I come now, humbled, to the collective hivemind of that which is /dbt/ with a question.
.
What cup holder should I get for my bike?

I'm already working on a patent design bendy straw that works WHILE I'm riding. It's good for any 1 inch screw top opening beverage. So you can enjoy a cold pepsi, sprite or hell even water.

I'm an excellent engineer, except I'm cheap. I'd engineer a cup holder but my standards are too high and it would cost me 100 dollars for materials and shop space rent. I could wait till school started in fall, then I'd have free access to the school's shop but by then summer will almost end.
As for the bendy straw, I just hot glued a silicone bendy straw to a 1 inch bottle cap.

I don't know man, it has done nothing but rain since spring came about. We get 3 phases in summer:
1.) Rain, more rain, still wet, okay more rain
2.) Hot, humid, guaranteed heat stroke if you wear gear, if you wet yourself before going out even
3.) perfect weather only happens for 1 hour of a drivable day (where it isn't dark and where it isn't rush hour)
I say dark is not drivable because we have a lot of drunk drivers.
>>
>>15244736
True. I'd never ever live in the south. We have beautiful days in the spring/fall that make it all worth it
>>
>>15244733
Man, I wanted some of them fries and the burgers seduced me.
Can't have both as I need to watch after my expenses now that I am jobless again.
>>
>>15244740
Yeah, sometimes riding is just miserable. Having to stop every 30 minutes to get some Gatorade because I've sweated every mineral out of my body. But fuck if I'm going to let some old guy out-ride me.
It's funny because we wonder why skin cancer is so common, but you see the old guys wearing nothing but shorts and a wife beater, partially bald, baking in the KY heat, sitting in traffic. They don't give a FUCK
>>
>>15244736
This is basically what its like here in Massachusetts. I made the mistake of thinking I could get in some good riding time between the hours of 5AM-7AM during the weekdays...biggest mistake of my fucking life. It's basically rush hour traffic.

The only time I can get the road to myself now is early mornings on the weekends, and even then it can be difficult.

And this is assuming it isn't raining, snowing, or 40F with a windchill in June like it was this morning.

hate this fucking place

This might be true for motorcycle manufacturers but let's not be silly, """M8""".the metric system is built on arbitrary lies, miscalculations, peasant revolts, French meddling and bullshit just as much as the glorious, human-scaled and relatable imperial system. Base-10 is a fundamentally flawed numerical system anyways.
