Why are you into cars, anon?
>>
>>15238639
i like driving
>>
>>15238639
Because Rotaries are the most reliable engine on the planet and everyone needs to know.
>great gas mileage
>heaps of torque
>god tier reliability
There isn't a better hobby in the world than driving a rotary
>>
I always liked driving, and somewhere in my 3rd college year I started getting into cars. I have no idea why, just kind of happened. Prior to that I knew nothing about cars and couldn't give a shit.

7 years later I'm thinking about buying my first manual daily driver, either a Civic 1.8L 5 speed or a Scion iM 6 speed. Though I may miss the power my 235hp V6 Sonata has right now. Oh well, my first car was a 103 hp Celica piece of shit.
>>
>>15238639
Don't know, been obsessed for as long as I can remember, probably since 3 or 4 years of age.
I can't tell you why, it's just like that.
>>
First car was a trashed '97 camaro, and being a broke high schooler I did most of the repairs myself while buying parts at the local junkyard.

Since then I've enjoyed working on cars and restoring a POS I can find cheap

Weirdly, I got into cars mostly because I love detailing cars. For me, my favorite hobby in the world is detailing cars and I detail my friends'/co-workers' cars for free. I bought a car I'm proud of solely because I love detailing it and driving it is a close second.

Don't know. I played with Hot Wheels when I was 2 years old, and I play with real cars today. It's genetic.
>>

trying to convert people to the best engine design of all time is bait now? please

Mechanical engineering is what separates man from the animals and cars are a celebration of that.
>>
>>15238639
Probably because my dad and brother were really into them
>>
>>15238639
I had a cousin who would take me racing in his Supra TT when I was young, it's been my dream to own once since.
>>
>>15238691
I can empathize with this fetish.
>>
>>15238639
I love mechanical marvels and working on machines.
>>
When I was around 6 years old I would grab the car classifieds and look through them shopping for my first car that if have in 10 years.

My dad was sort of a car interested guy, he had a modified car we worked on and I fell in love.

But most of all, no car, no highways of Valhalla.

>>
>>15238826
Yeah, Tucson Arizona, we'd drive either to Phoenix or go to Mexico to race, good times.

No, but I know someone by that name who was also friends with my cousin and drove a Supra aswell, he also worked on them.

Why?

Because it's more than you can afford, pal. Supra.

(If you haven't seen The Fast and The Furious ...)
>>
When I was 3 or 4 I would sit on my dads lap and work the steering wheel while he worked the pedals. Whenever we got home from somewhere and drove into our neighborhood, I always got to drive the rest of the way down the street.

Loved it just as much then as I do now.
>>
>>15238851
Right?

The Supra is my favorite car of all time, nothing comes close to how nice they look for me, my dad owned a Honda Prelude and when I first set my eyes on the Supra I thought 'Damn, they look a lot alike, I want that'

My opinion for them went to all new levels when I expressed to my cousin that I really wanted one and he offered to take me to race in his.

>>15238861
Afraid I haven't seen the movie, not much of a movie guy, guess I missed the joke, oops
>>
I think it's a subject that looks pretty shallow for people outside of the "culture", but gets extremely deep once you start to get into it.
First you like some cars, then you get into engine sizes and configurations, then you start to understand about motorsports and start to wrench, now you're addicted.
>>
I have no friends and limited hobbies.
>>
I wasnt a few years ago, I mean yeah I knew when a car was special and such but didnt care much.

Then I got a 1,2 and I just fell in love with driving, it wasnt fast or anything but it was just the feeling of driving.

Just sold the car so thats kinda sad..but now I feel like im ready for something with a bit more power and maybe rwd/awd
>>
>>15238639
I dont care much for driving, but I like working on machines and electrical systems.
I didnt really care anything about cars until I started working on mine.

>now I feel like im ready for something with a bit more power and maybe rwd/awd

What worries me most about the hobby is how lazy it's getting. Now you get these 'car enthusiasts' with fwd automatic diesels who think their car and fandom deserve the same respect as say, an e30 m3. They have no passion.
>>
>>15238986
You have no passion you're just going along with the crowd
>>
>>15239013
nah he's right
>>
>>15239029
Why? Can't people enjoy those cars?
Trying to get the most out of a people mover is pretty sweet actually.
>>
>>15239013
You don't find it convenient that these people only have 'passion' for things that are readily available at their nearest dealership and fit perfectly with their non-car lifestyle?
>>
>>15238691
Read that as "derailing" at first
>>
>>15239029
You have confused "constantly having to mend your shitbox" with "passion"

First because of necessity and second because of auditory aesthetics as well as visual. I like the feeling of driving a car, how the mechanical pieces work with eachother and around eachother. I crave the freedom my car provides me because I didn't grow up near public transportation. They're a fucking marvel and too many take them for granted. One day I hope to worship at the altar of the almighty V8, but living in socialist denmarkistan makes that venture rather cost-prohibitive. Unless you're either a drug dealer or a rich boomer.

Will motorsports ever have such superior design again?
>>
>>15239047
You don't find it convenient that "people" like you only have 'passion' for things that readily give street cred at their local car meets and fit perfectly with their car subculture's aesthetic and lifestyle?
>>
>>15239084
I don't think you've ever been to an actual car meet. Probably just something very specific and circle jerky like a honda meet. People who are only passionate about things that don't require any effort are just lazy.

>>15239076
When they figure out how to change 6 tyres and 6 sets of pads in the same time it takes to change 4 I guess.
>>
>>15238889
Same except for the friends and hobbies part
>>
I like cars.. but I hate the car scene as most people are faggots who think they're cool or better because they have a 'nice car'.

Also car meets are full of manchildren who start drama
>>
I like machines, and I find them interesting.

I might just as easily become fascinated with antique sewing machines or something.

But you can't climb into a sewing machine and bang gears on the back roads.

> Unless you have a smart car. Then you can climb into a sewing machine.
>>
>>15239195
Same. That's why I don't go to meets.

Even the phrase "car scene" makes me cringe.

I just appreciate the work that goes into engineering cars. Extra points if it's a good car. (Well designed, good looking, fun to drive.)

And that feeling of driving on a twisty mountain road. Better than sex.
>>
>>15238639
Because I like driving, and I like driving cool shit that looks cool and feels fun. That's about it.

>>
When I was a kid, I had a bunch of hot wheels cars and lego car sets. My dad and I would watch F1 and Nascar on TV and play Gran Turismo a lot.
>>
I saw Initial D, and I'm a weaboo.
>>
This is going to sound bad, but it's true.

I watched Drive and started liking the thought of driving. My dad flipped cars back in Hungary so I basically grew up around them, didn't think much of them at the time but it came naturally to me post-Drive.

three reasons:
>environment
it's the culture we live in, especially in the U.S.
>necessity
I am a poorfag, and wrenching is not a luxury it's a necessity
>hoonage
driving is fun.

I think a more apt question for you to ask is:
when does the experience of using/owning an appliance become more than that?

>be young me
>maximum safe and cozy feels was bombing the highways in my parents vehicles
>always old shitboxes and trucks
>be grown up me
>never own a vehicle more recent than 1996
>vast majority are shitboxes and trucks
>friends raising their kid
>sure way to make kid go to sleep is bombing the highways in their vehicles
get 'em hooked young

Aesthetics. Saw a car show in Japan when i was young. Then was involved with a series of like 9 car accidents from ages 8-21 (Never being the driver) completely fucked me when it comes to actually driving cars.

I do think it was my dad's fault, although he doesn't understand shit about how a car works.

Living in SE Michigan my whole life probably helped a bit, but I never really cared about cars beyond "they're pretty cool" until I ended up working as an engineering intern at an automotive company (now graduated).
I appreciate them more now for the work that goes into them, but I'm still not hardcore into cars (the mechanics still elude me, beyond the basic stuff). I really enjoy driving though. I may not know much about working on cars mechanically, but driving has always been enjoyable for me.
