While the pre-1967, no-holds-barred import scene played a hand in fostering the development of cars like the Corvette, a complete lack of any regulation probably isn't a good idea. I'm not saying the 1967-1987 period was perfect; gave us lots of lovely things like "having to add on those damn catalytic converters we were trying to avoid in the first place" and "big ugly battering rams for bumpers", but at least getting a foreign car was possible.

It's illegal to import them you dipshit. You can't legally have one until they're 25 years old. THEN you can import one. If you must have a Skyline, import an R32, or buy a V35 Infiniti G35 and swap the badges.
Overall, the hype of this car far overshadows the reality of it. Skylines are Japan's Ford Mustang. It's not really anything super special but fans talk up the car so much to people who can't have them and therefore can't call them out on their bullshit
