Is God Hand's technique sound?
I consider God Hand to be the most skilled opponent of the series who didn't rely on supernatural force to compete.
The questions I have, however, are:
1. Is the concept of driving solely with one hand, with the other constantly on the shifter a more efficient technique if one is at an advanced enough level? Would forcing yourself to drive with one hand train you to steer more smoothly?
2. Is resting your hand on the shifter detrimental? I've heard conflicting opinions on the matter.
3. How does one cope with extreme turn angles steering with only one hand?
Is there any merit to the theory?

My friend told me The point of Initial D was that if your car is RWD, and you have the skill, you can beat anyone. FWD does not have this advantage and must depend on its specs more.

The level of skill you would need to drive with one hand is pretty high, and if you were at that level of skill it would still be a handicap on how good you could drive with both hands on the wheel. There's a reason the really high end performance cars come with paddle shifters instead of a stick, your hands should always be near the wheel.

I haven't watched the episode, but I can tell that that "technique" is complete bullshit. In fact, professional racecar drivers don't do this. If anything never taking your hand off the shifter will make you slower since now you have one hand not doing much of anything instead of being actively engaged in steering the car.

@1, it's no more or less efficient as long as you're not missing optimal shift points because you hesitantly avoid steering with one hand when the conditions call for it. It would make it harder to manhandle the steering and naturally incentivize you to avoid getting the car too far out of control. It will also train against the first thing I mentioned, in that you should know how to handle the steering just as well while upshifting or downshifting into corners.
@2, if you aren't exerting any force on the shifter I don't believe it'd be bad for the car, but I'm not mechanically knowledgeable enough to say if leaving the weight of your hand on the shifter at all is detrimental to the transmission. As for general safety, two hands can handle extreme situations more effectively 100%, but shifting or lack thereof can also cause losses of control or aide recovery, so it's not a good thing to ignore if you have the ability to shift.
@3, you don't really, which is why they made a point that he had extraordinary four wheel drifting technique that minimized countersteering and made it possible for him to only use one hand in all circumstances.
There's merit, though nothing prevents you from learning to drive essentially the same way with two hands and also driving as well with one hand during shift points, plus you have more control in the case of an accident or mechanical failure, so you probably wouldn't see it employed at a racing school over standard techniques.

The AE86 wasn't exactly supertuned when you consider the fact that every car it was up against was also supertuned.
The TRD Racing engine makes something like 240hp, other than that the car just had close gear ratios and tuneable suspension of some description - never mentioned to what level the suspension was altered.
Most of those changes wouldn't do anything for a driver unless they were skilled enough to make use of it.

I drive one handed. The only time I drive two handed is when I lightly lose control on a dirt road and that's more out of fear so I can brace myself than control. When there's hairpin turns I simply grab the wheel at different points according to how much I need to turn it.
