How possible is this, truthfully?
>>
Pretty easy

Small shitboxes usually go for that much
>>
Pretty common, they almost always have some sort of serious drivetrain problem though but many still run.

if you live somewhere that doesn't have inspections then it is 100% possible
>>
Impossible unless you expect it to break down every month

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/5614522589.html this actually looks cool

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/5619212959.html obvious scam

Are these typical $500 beaters?
>>
>>15207840
Dead simple in the UK. Running, viable cars with an MOT and months of wear on the tires go for down to £100.
'Part exchange to clear' from smaller dealerships, bought off people who just want rid of their old car when buying a newer one and don't want to deal with actually selling it.
And that's advertised price. Can probably go in and offer them £75 and walk off with the keys, because it's worth less than the space it's parked on.

this seems like it just needs a new alternator.

>obvious scam
Why?
>>
>>15207990
There is literally nothing wrong with it. You could sell that for at least a couple thousand.
>>
>>15207840
I'll sell you my piece of shit car, it has these problems

1. Front suspension is blown out
2. Exhaust leak in the flex pipe
3. Needs oil changes
4. Needs transmission fluid changed (NOT FLUSHED) and the filter replaced
5. Could have spark plugs replaced but that's not a big issue since they were replaced 40k miles ago and the engine is stronk

oh, and the rear passenger tire keeps losing air on cold days. Only on cold days though, wtf?
>>
>>15208039
>flex pipe exhaust
people actually do this
>>
>>15208039
I just want to know if it's even possible to get a car that is working or needs work that doesn't cost a lot to do yourself for $500.
>>
>>15208229
No...not to have it said and done its going to cost 75$ to change the title plus tags...so your looking at something for 300$ and finding something for that will be almost impossible to start with if it even has a motor
>>
>>15208229
Generally it's one of four things
>very high mileage but looks okay and runs okay, odds are something serious and big will break soon
>runs great but body/paint is beat up (this is the general go-to for poorfags since mechanically, it's fine and often newer than the others)
>looks great but has serious problem
>old or ugly model that nobody really wants but is actually pretty great (the geo metro/twingo phenomenon) Saw an 85 Tercel sedan the other day for $500 that was in immaculate shape.
>>
>>15208039
>front suspension

That's literally like a $200 fix

Everything else you listed is a meme
>>
>>15208268

that seems like this http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/5617532552.html

it looks so fucked that it's comical. only 100k miles, clean title, no """known"""" mechanical issues

I just bought a cressida for 400 bucks yesterday, needs a shift solenoid but it's a drifting machine

I also know where a running 68 c10 is for sale for 400 as well

>>
>>15207840
you can get an old rust bucket truck for that here in WA. the interior will probably smell like mildew and it wont be a very reliable rig, but theyre easy to get running right and are way better than walking

me and a friend picked up two of them one weekend and did some softcore demolition derby stuff with them. was good for a few laughs. we just scrapped them when we were done.

they are a bit harder to come across these

I'm also in the market for a winter beater and car that has something wrong with it that's worthy of learning to fix, since I want to get into cars. Can't find anything for less than $1200 on CL. anyone want to rate? Mostly looking for a truck or SUV so it can also double as transporting shit if I ever need to do that.

400€ which is about 500 or so USD for a 1986 2.3 fuel injected NA shitbox.
No rust whatsoever, absolutely nothing mechanically wrong in the powertrain and nothing keeping it from passing inspection.
Steering was extremely light, probably because the power steering pump was fucked one way or another. Didn't leak fluids so I didn't really care. Perfect for hektik winter skidz. M

Both my cars have been $400 volvos. No ragrets
>>
>>15208403
I really like that Mitsubishi on there, look around for a good sale on tires and you'd be all set for a while, just make sure it's not too rusty yet, NE winters will eviscerate your steel.
>>
>>15208279
It's not a meme, I stopped driving it at 5k miles and the transmission fluid hasn't been changed in a long time. Transmission has 70k miles on, engine has 215k. It was my pizza beater so it runs well enough. I suspect it also has a fuel pump problem somewhere since it sputters and is hard to start when it's REALLY cold but once it's warmed up it's fine.
>>
My '98 civic was 500 bucks and only had two owners

Has 245k miles and runs tip top, misfired when I first got it but was onl old ass spark plugs and wires

bought this in february for ~250$, apart from alternator belt replacement and not working passenger side power window everything is fine and still runs, and is fun as fuck to daily. And it runs on lpg so to compare i get like 65 mpg.
gods machine
>>
My first car was $500.
>My uncle's neighbor pushed a 1984 Nissan Sentra out of his garage
>About a month went by and grass was growing up around it
>Walked over and talked to him and asked him what's wrong with it
>Said it needs a clutch - it was his mothers car
>78k miles & garage kept
>He started it up & revved the motor
>Had small engine knowledge and I tried applying that to the car - told him it sounds like a strong running motor
>Virtually no rust anywhere
>Gave him $500 and pushed it to my uncles house as the clutch was toast
>Pedal had zero resistance
>Bought a Chilton's manual & started looking at it
>Clutch pedal wasn't moving anything under the hood
>Clutch cable clamp loosened up and the cable slipped
>Readjusted the cable and put 43k miles on it before the timing belt went
>Sold it for $800

It was slow, ugly, and extremely reliable. I drove it like I stole it throughout highschool. Buddies and I took it all over the state the summer after junior year. Then we went to Florida for spring break in it after graduating.
>High 40's for mpg despite the fact I drove it hard

I didn't have any automotive knowledge when I owned the car. Friends were into trucks and they helped me replace worn suspension components.
>Replaced shocks / struts
>Brakes & calipers
>Tie rods & ball joints
>Replaced worn/dry bushings
>Tune up
>Tires

For a $500 car it survived 43k HARD miles. Everyday first and second went straight to & past the redline.
>First would take me to 25mph at 6k
>Second would take me to 65 at 6.5k
>6k redline

Topped it out at 136 going down the bridge with wind behind my back.
>Sounded like a little tin can airplane
>Thought it was going to shake itself apart

Before I knew anything cars were a lot more fun. Was a lot less afraid of something breaking. I didn't really like the car because it was ugly so I didn't care if it blew up.
>It's a lot more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow
>Buyers remorse with my 13 Mustang GT

>flex pipe exhaust

Came factory stock.
>>
>>15208677
It's a 2000 hyundai elantra, there's a little flex pipe just below the header that apparently rusts out easily. It only took 16 years for it to happen.
>>
>>15207840
one perfectly running, albeit rusty, geo metro
