Looking to start an na race engine build
I want to keep it na, so I'm looking for something with relatively high torque for good gains through changing cams, valves, porting
What is considered high torque for a 4banger? What is a good engine for this?
Is torque even important? Should I be going for revs instead?
Build a SD4 Iron Duke
20valve or gtfo
..so 4age probably because it got a largish aftermarket.
Or look into Toyota 3rz-fe motor..
It's 2.7 litre so one of the largest displacement 4cylinders available.
Torque or low rev torque is not important for 4banger race engine.
Making a large usable power band is.
Get it built for revs
Use good cams
Port the heads
And use ITBs
Starting with a Honda or 4age will be your best bet. Honda cheap parts and factory 9k redlines and 4age for 5 valve heads. Both can make great power in race guise

4age can't make shit for power
3sge can at least make 200hp+ without needing a rebuild every 24 hours

What honda engine would you recommend? >>15207063
The 4age sounds good, the 3sge might be a bit expensive for me

K series are popular for a reason, you can use a k24 block with a k20 head and get really good power.
B series are also popular and cheaper. Bolt ons for a type r engine make a reasonable gains and Ecu is really easy to sort through hondata or k pro

>4cyl
>good torque
Pick one.

The BEAMS 3S-GE costs the same as a Blacktop 4A-GE, look em up on eBay

B series? Man, this just makes me sad. Rip old Saab engines

What will the engine be doing? That helps determine what your powerband should look like.

>3.2L 330 hp version
Good god. That's six cylinder displacement.
And it's making over 100 hp/l with push rods.
Impressive
Explain why it must be a 4 cyl.
