This is all the GT86 had to be. This is all it needed. Here's the template.

How would you spec it out so that it's still cheaper than the current Toyobaru while still offering around the same ballpark.
>>
that's an okay looking bar of soap.
>>
>2zz ge
>barebones interior, something like a old stock Honda type r model
>windy windows
>ac optional
>ps optional
>passenger side mirror optional
>electronic locking mechanism optional, otherwise just plain metal key into ignition
>>
>>15204985
congrats, you spec'd a car that would be a financial failure
>>
>>15204994

kinda like a frs :)
>>
>>15204985
heh

keep the airbags, tcs, anti lock brakes, stability system?

you little pussy
>>
>>15204934

>>
>>15205006
Holy shit you're right, just have all that shit optioned out
>>
>>15204985
Two doors With the transmission and rear axle it has now.
Of course have a loaded option because but also have a lightest base model.
Good bucket seats.
>>
>>15205017
backseats optional
>>
I honestly wonder how cheap something like >>15204985
>>15205006
>>15205017
would be to produce.
Just a coupe already existing toyota chassis, paired with an already existing engine. The only thing would be the RWD. There would be nothing fancy that could break or would cost money to develop, no weird partnership with Subaru.
>>
>>15204985
It's not the 80's anymore buddy... Nobody aside from car enthusiasts and /o/ autists would option a corolla like that.
>>
>>15205000
Best year in the US for the FR-S I think was 18K units? Mazda has NEVER sold 18,000 MX-5's in a year. Closest I think is just shy of 17K units back in 2006

Granted I'm not a FR-S fanboy, but it's hardly been a financial failure, it's shortcomings were elsewhere

>>15205038
To get it past crash test safety, about 12-14K. You already have cars pushing the price basement on the market right now and that's about as cheaply as they can be made.
>>
>>15205038
plus the 2zz ge is a tried and true engine with good tuning potential that wont blow up or start falling apart if you try to do anything to it a like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h63qv9ScdXI
>>15205045
the point isn't whether or not everyone or nobody takes the bare bones model (and there will certainly be poorfags who do that) its that the options exist and being able to have that optioning freedom again to pick and choose each detail on such a cheap car, plus those extremely cut back no options models would save $$$
>>
>>15204994
We just want a two door lift back corolla with rwd and the only power options standard are in the engine. Yes I own a brz but I want a mundane car that I can drift for 15k new off the lot. And I understand why it will never happen. That's why we are having a "whatcha want thread" let the anons dream

>Questioning a customers choices

I bought a slightly used brz and brought it to autocross 3 days later. A dealer in my area won the gt350r lottery and ran his allotment the day before he sold it with a markup. It's a performance car. Drive it pussy.
>>
>>15205120
Airbags, traction control and abs mandatory.
>>
>>15205128
the "new car so i can skid it round some cones in a parking lot market" is a small one.
personally i wouldn't build my business around it
>>
>>15205057
The problem is bare bone model cars aren't very profitable for either dealerships or manufactures, they don't sell in high numbers and are the least valuable to most people buying first or second hand.

So why would Toyota for example want to invest lots of money into a car focused at a financially poor target audience or minority car enthusiasts? Historically both groups are proven to buy used cars because they offer a better overall value in multiple aspects.
>>
>>15204934
if they slapped a shitty little turbo on the brz it'd be /perfecto/
>>
>>15205143
Why do people buy the gt86 over used cars?

Unless I'm thinking it wrong, when they option out a car the stock build would be the bare bones model and then they'd just add whatever options they requested
it wouldn't really be a
>I have a gt86 type R or gt86 LS or gt86 XRS
but just more how cars use to be done
>i have a gt86 no passenger mirror but electronic locks , abs, ac, and ps
>>
>>15204934
Looks like a forte koup
>>
>>15205142
Yeah that's why you build like 10% as strippers and the majority just 2door coupes with normal corolla engines and offer awd. market the rwd as the gt-s. It could be built up as a premium or the xrs option with no boxes but stereo and fog lights checked. Awd sells like mad, hardcore tools get the xrs. Casuals get the gt-s and Toyota has a drift car to show off at formula drift that isnt a faked fwd TC.
>>
>>15205188
Huh that's interesting
>>
>>15205163
>why do people buy the gt86 over used cars
isnt that the question of the day
>>
>>15205200
Because it has to be sold new to be resold used? You realize most auto brzs in my area are driven by grandmas right?
>>
>>15205212
but what if you just didnt buy a gt86
>>
>you will never live in a world where this exists and you bought it new for cheap and just thrash it
>>
>>15205215
You would have to drive a boring shitbox. What if the government mandated you buy a Yugo? That is about as relevant to the discussion. I want a 2 door rwd corolla. Fuck it gimme a rwd startlet reboot.

>>15205260

>>15205200
>>15205215
>>
>>15205266
what i was arguing is instead of buying the current gt86 new you could just buy a used car because seriously the gt86 is such a pointles car if you live in america and maybe even other places at its current price
>>
>>15205274
You are arguing with a owner who doesn't agree with you. It doesn't matter what you say, I like it. I'm glad I bought it and it is not a bad car. It's the nicest car I have ever owned and I don't know why you have any issues with me thinking that.
>>
>>15205273
To be fair, most car companies aren't keen on taking many risks right now/sell to the lowest common denominator.

Toyota killed Scion mainly because millennials buyers didn't "feel" it had the same reputation for quality as Toyota, even though any half educated car person knows they are the same thing.

The success of marketing crossovers to millennials is why the next Z car from Nissan is going to be one.
>>
>>15205301
I also drive valet so I know what the other cars out are like. I also can't get them so i could have a busted z4 or my car. Guess what I pick?

They should build it with a chassis that doesn't need a tubular rollbar and market it as "safe enough for racing" and have one wreck by getting rammed off course and have the driver get out a get into one that doesn't have numbers like the Nissan commercial. Fuck millennials. They don't know shit

You can tell what way the wind is blowing when the design chief at NIssan said, on record, that they company only has room for 2 sports cars, and the GT-R will always be one, and that the next Z car needed more "revolution than evolution" aka "we are gonna build whatever we can shovel the most units of"

>>
>>15204934
>RWD
>2ZZ
>>
>>15205054
>miatas sold for over a decade
>FRS for barely three years

You have to look at percent incline and decline over time to really judge something like that, otherwise you would have to be comparing the first few years of production of the mx5 only with what info we have now for the FRS, which would of course be immediately skewed by the differences in car culture and the average auto buyer of the time.

I say this as a fan of nothing, I'm not even really in love with the new toy I own right now. It will however be very interesting to watch the future of the GT86, especially after the brand roll-in. The market for new vehicles is in such a bizarre flux right now in emerging-trend setting areas like modern high population city centers, and when you couple that with a manufacturers seeming uncertainty about a specific brand model that has never been produced before, it makes forecasting nearly impossible.

OP has a render of a modern corolla coupe, its platform is strictly fwd.

Or a small supercharger

250rwhp in this car with some sticky tires and lightweight wheels would be nuts.

I might buy a RWD Civic Si if that is what you are getting at OP.
>>
>>15211738

you could, you know, add your own. you get a pretty awesome package and with a few thousand you can build it to be as quick as you want
>>
>>15211738
the engine literally cant handle it, if you try to do tuning it'll explode
you will dump way more money then the car is worth into it
>>
>>15211680
The mustang is just too large of a car and the genesis doesn't feel all that tight to me.

This is why differences exist, because not everyone likes what you like. A miata would be fine but I don't want a convertible, and unless I'm mistaken the civic type r isn't sold in the US yet, nor is it RWD.
>>
>>15205006
All three of those things are federally mandated. You cannot sell a new car in the US right now without airbags or stability control, and stability control requires ABS.

I've owned and driven a lot of cars, and the 86 imo is a great car. I'm probably a little biased because I own one.

This car isn't for everyone though. You need to think about what you want out of a car first. Don't buy this car if you hate downshifting or rev matching. This car forces you to be aggressive, but the more you push it, the more fun you have.

The fixed hard top and extra seats are a nice bonus too.
>>
>>15216208

I had been looking at 350z's before I even knew about the BRZ so I was kind of after something more fun than some lame family sedan but nothing I was gonna have to dump a ton of money into turning it into a racecar.

I feel like the 86 platform is something semi reliable and fun that's worth tinkering with eventually and that's all I wanted
>>
>>15216208

It really depends on if you would rather buy new or used.

I've heard that the 370z is a big improvement over the 350, and those are getting pretty cheap too.

If you're thinking about an 86, I would wait until the refresh is released in September. There will most likely be a lot of improvements to the car, and the torque dip eliminated.
>>
>>15214260
Seriously, why the fuck do you guys always complain about car manufacturers not catering to you anymore when you're just going to whine that a $2000 used Honda is a much better deal even when they do?
>>
>>15216280
Looking at used almost exclusively, trying to stay under $25k usd

Which means I probably won't be picking up a new one in the fall, and I don't know if my shitbox will last until then anyway
>>
>>15216170
Its not legitimate shit but its not the greatest.
If you're deadset on getting something new for whatever reason, the 30-35k coupe market is pretty small and dependent on what you need. Just understand that youre getting something slower than a miata for the tradeoff of better practicality.
However if you could buy used you definitely should. For 30k you could get a 370/g37/s2k/cayman s

Only on a track, with the brz having handicap tires. It's actually quick with the same tires on it. And the stock tires are gone in less than a summer if you drive aggressively. Also if you want to buy a brz budget 500$ for summer tires. Both the 350 and 370z are 2 seaters only.
