What does /o/ think of interior lighting? Thinking of installing some, the custom setup I've priced out is around $40.
Looks terrible in any car, blue being the worst color by far.

OP asked for an opinion, I gave him one. Blue light is also objectively anti-comfy (the wavelength keeps people awake as its associated with morning, this light is also emitted from computer screens which is why you're told not to use it before bed), if you have to use any light then yellow-orange is best.

Also OP, you're overpaying. You can get a 5m reel for 15-20 and just wire them with whatever spare 1-1.5m^2 you have around and some VHB if the chinese tape doesn't stick well enough.

I'm spending 22 on a 5m reel because I want rgb lights. Don't have any wire laying around, have to buy that. Then I'm wiring lights for the backseat as well, so I need to buy rgb extension wire as well. I'll have some more left over for projects later on though, so that's a plus.

General Motors some years ago commissioned a study for interior lighting effects while the car is being driven. It was found that certain amounts of bluish light (not all blue) with a bit of sharp tinge (not necessarily white but a sharp reflection would do) had significant statistical benefit in keeping drivers more alert in dark environments where the only roadway light is from the car's headlights.

How do you hook this up to the car's system?? Dont want to be dependent on external batteries. Without saying, that means it turns on when the car is on and can be turned off during daylight.

I got mine that had a 12v car adapter. I just ran it from the port in my center console (ignition/on position activated) and under the trim to the passenger side. Ran it across the dash from there. Pretty simple to do.
EL wire isn't super harsh, but is bright enough to be seen well at night. The little converter puts off a high pitch noise, but if you wrap it in a piece of tape or hide it in the glove box you can't hear it.
If you want something simple but bright af buy some cold cathode tubes. I have 2 red ones under my dash in my mustang and they're great. Just make sure they're tucked underneath something and not completely visible, because that's ugly amd ricerish when your lights are visible
