Never Wrenched...
Want to wrench...
The question is where to begin on the hardware side...?

What is a decent starter kit set up of tools & cost $$$, from Harbor Freight to Snap-on that will get a job done with out trouble for a fair price?

Get a craftsman 240pc tool set with the 3 drawers of sockets, get an angle grinder, half inch earthquake impact, air compressor, set of large impact sockets, breaker bar, channel locks and vice grips of varying sizes, punches, chisels and hammers.
All that and you'll be off to a good start.
>>
get a 100(?) piece craftsman tool set that has sockets, ratchets, wrenches, and a few screw drivers. Pretty good for basic jobs.

I think some trip already made a tool guide, forgot to save it

I have a Craftsman 174 piece set that I guess is now discontinued. It would be perfectly fine for a new wrench with the addition of some pliers.

any advise on welders? did some a few ago mostly oxy, suppose it's all wire core off the shelf / HDX on sale now for simple jobs?

cheap tool set. I've been working with a cheap 100+ piece tool set with 1/4", 3/8s ratchets and a set of end wrenches. I've used this for every mechanical job I've done for the past 7 years? And a lot of that is professional work. Works fine.

Other big thing would be a torque wrench. don't buy a cheap torque wrench.

May as well pick up a volt meter in there too.

TIME SAVING TIER
ratcheting end wrenches
cordless impact driver

Get one that can do MIG, flux core is fucking shit
220v unit if you're welding thick ass shit like axles and frames.

missed that...
dont wanna repeat & amplify whats already been.

just looking for sound advice

cheap 120v mig is fine for most mechanic stuff. I wouldn't suggest a welder for starting out, they are more expensive than every hand tool you need combined.

Lincoln and miller both offer really nice entry level multiprocess machines now. The lincoln is significantly cheaper and on sale right now, 210mp? I believe it is.

What's a 1/2 way decent mig set up go for ?

Lost in this territory.

Check out garage journal tool truck thread 2.0.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=249851

Excellent tools without the mark up.

No but it's handy to have both. Air for the tough stuff and electric for the fiddly or hard to reach stuff
