You heard it here folks, it's time for another /mtg/ Miata General!

Got a new dashboard that's not cracking installed today..I don't have a picture yet but eh, here's a meme. Any who, I finished installing the dash and getting everything hooked back up only to realize my gauges no longer work...I think it could be the new wiring harness but what should I check?

Before you remove the wiring harness,
> 1 Check to see everything is connected properly to the wiring harness and grounding is not an issue.

literally can't see any of the suspension in that pic.

You're right though look, they like total garbage... Refinished the control arms last year because they were rusting. Upright wasn't nor was the caliper. No point in making that shit pretty if it's not rusting and it's structurally sound.

The fuck out of here with ricer painted caliper bullshit.
>>
>>15199242
Fuel grade won't see an appreciable increase or decrease in mileage. Pretty much solely around town 20mpg is about right. My 1.6 was low 20s around town, averaged 27 combined, 32-34 highway. The 1.8 I swapped it with is a bit lower highway and combined.
>>
I have a really strong smell of fuel when I take hard right corners in my 99.
I've been told to look at the filler neck and the shelf behind the seats. Shelf behind the seats isn't hard but I'm not sure what exactly I'm looking for around the filler neck. Over looked there before and just tightened some clamps but what exactly am I looking for?
>>
>>15199471
Compromised hoses and leaks...

Take the parcel shelf carpet out before you drive it hard again.
>>
>>15199424
>painted control arms and inner fenders
>didn't take the time to put the bolts through a piece of cardboard and spray the heads black

also don't you hate it when you see aftermarket control arms, coils, shocks, sways etc and the stock spindles stick out and look shitty
>>
>>15199493
No, I don't hate that. As I said, I only did the control arms to take care of the cancer that was starting to take hold. No point in doing fasteners and the like. Same reason I didn't do the calipers, sway bars, or uprights. it's my DD during the summer. I drive it, I don't hard park it.

>A good intake
>Header, midpipe and exhaust, high flow cat
>Megasquirt pnp2 with the AFM delete
>COP conversion
>93 octane tune
>>
>>15193878
Nigga im baked as fuck dont do that to me
>>15193863
This pretty much, might be one or two manufacturers out there that make softer shit
>>
>>15199982
If u can get someone to pass you for emissions, do a set of long headers and a 2.5" straightpipe, for the intake make sure its actually getting cold air which means not where the stock intake is. That and getting a tune for a few hundred should bring you up to 155ish.
If you want a lot of more power, dump a couple grand into piecing together a turbo kit with a smaller turbo so no lag. Stock 1.8's should be good to 200 ish, so you can get almost double with a stock longblock.

whenever i drive my miata in 1-3 gear, when i accelerate in the 2k RPM range, I keep hearing a metallic rattle that can get a bit embarrassing when driving, since its kinda noticeable to hear. Someone told me it might be a defective exedy clutch installed from the previous owner, but I honestly doubt it. I tried looking at the exhaust hanger but it seems completely fine. anyone had similar issues?
>>
>>15200930
Only during acceleration?
Is the same thing happening when you take the feet off the clutch?
>>
>>15200939
Yes only when accelerating in the 2k-2.5k range in the lower gears. oddly enough, sometimes when i'm idling, when I fully press my clutch inwards, a little sequel that it makes when its in idle goes away but comes back when I'm idling while not pressing the clutch and shit. Its bizarre as fuck
>>
>>15200954
Might be the heat shield around the exhaust. My car does the same thing in 2-3k RPM range but goes away when it's just idling. I have some metal "zip ties" that I keep neglecting to put on the heat shield to suppress that rattle.
>>
Guys I'm thinking about buying my uncles 93 miata from him for 1400. It's got a brand new clutch and brake master cylinder. 170,000 miles on it. Good tread on front tires, rear tires will probably need replacing within the next six months. What do you guys think?

NA front end doesn't really fit, and the square headlights don't fit the NB's body style.

FD would fit better since the NB has similar lines.

the plate is there because its covering up a crack, and the only reason it has skirts is to cover rust (got them cheap). im pretty much done with this car, it needs far too much money spending on it to sort rust issues out. im only running it until i get enough to buy another (maybe an nb) then sell this one in parts. at least now i know what to look out for when buying one of these

the miata is just one of those cars that almost always looks great dipped. I thinks it's because it's so small and not so complex that it's not too hard to do right
>>
>>15205415
Holy shit....I just have liability on mine that's horrifying...

I'm getting mine dipped as a temp solution before it gets wrapped. My friend is dipping it for the cost of the dip and my other friend is wrapping it for the cost of the wrap.....I love having connections (:

I'd 99% dip it myself if I went that route. I can do a passable job actually painting shit, so I imagine dipping can't be to horrible to figure out if I take my time.

Home depot actually has red plastidip in stock, I've bean meaning to pick up a can, and spray a little on the old fender just to see what it would look like

Anyone want to buy a mazdaspeed? located in pa
>>
>>15205503
it's kinda depressing tbqh pham. The only parts that I have some clue of the required cost and work are the radiator and windshield. I can get a shop to do the windshield for $200-300, and I found a radiator with solid reviews on Amazon for $82 that I could easily install myself.

As far as the airbag and bumper... I want to reinstall an airbag for muh safety, but I'm having a hard time finding DIY resources for that, but I feel like it should be simple enough to not have to pay a shop to do it.

I know a bumper will be easy to install, but I would either have to pay $400+ for a new OEM part or "cheap" out on a used scrap bumper which will still be hundreds after shipping (there are no miatas in junk yards within a reasonable distance) and then lord knows what on top of that to paint it.

The only I'm not worried is the lip. It was really nice, I don't remember if it was factory or not but it looked great... but it's the one part that isn't necessary

Hey /o/. Picked up my first Miata yesterday. 67K mile Mazdaspeed. One owner, took amazing care of the vehicle and I honestly got a steal on the price (it was actually below KBB fair deal price).

The car never saw rain until yesterday's storms when I had to drive it home 88 miles. Sad about it, and it already needs to be washed because of the damm rain.

>>
Bought a 99 1.6 NB today. It handles well but its not really that fast. Really fun car tho. Looking forward to doing some mods on it
>>
What are differences between the NA and NB other than headlights? From what I gathered 99s are practically exactly the same as NAs and 01s have some safety/comfort additions that come at the price of "feels".

I'm actually thinking of getting an 01+ because I kinda want the more modern features (and I personally like the NB2 styling the best of the three options because it looks like a mini FD). Are the "feels" really that diminished or will I still have equally a good time? Also, which version is more friendly for a 6'2" guy?
>>
>>15207144
And its still shit
>>
Alright fellas, I'm the guy from earlier in thread buying my uncles 93 NA. It has the 1.6L engine of course. I've decided to go through with buying it, and I'm gonna drive it stock for a little bit but my plans for modification are as follows:

New wheels and tires
Lower it with some coil overs
Supercharge it to get that sick 170hp
Sleepyeye headlights

What else would you guys recommend? I've never had a miata before and I'm pretty excited about it.
>>

I was looking at superchargers because I an get a full kit for about $2800 for a very nice amount of power. How much do turbo kits run?

Also how is the general reliability on these cars?
>>
>>15209434
For tall people, nb. the seats are just plain better as well. the nb is still a great handling car, and you'll have to worry less about stuff like bushings being worn b/c of the age. 01+ have vvt I think, so if you ever want to do a turbo or anything like forced induction it's gonna be a pain in the ass.
>>
Can a Miata outrun a Corolla in a quarter mile
I'm being serious here
>>
>>15199174
>>15209612
They were built in the era of 55mph speed limits. They're intended to cruise on the freeway at that speed, at around 3000ish RPM.

Cruising at 80 on modern freeways gives worse mileage.
>>
>>15209747
I live in 3rdworldistan, i cruise on the highway at 60, around 3.4k rpm. The problem I think is that I can only hold that speed for like a mile before some prickface in a toyota pickup truck blocks the overtaking lane while going 30 and I need to slow down for the next 10 miles.
>>
>>15209621
For a good kit done yourself you could probably turbo and build the engine out for max of a grand more and you'll be making 250hp pretty easily.
In terms of reliability treat her right and she'll treat you right.

>>15209720
I'm 6' with an NA lol I fit alright enough.
>>
>>15209767
yeah, I'm 6'1 and have an na too, it's alright, but when I track it my helmet rubs on the hardtop so i need to drive around while crouching, even after a foamectomy.
>>
>>15209746
a NA miata is slightly faster then a 90s corolla, Newer models literally destroy miatas.
>>
>>15209817
>a NA miata is slightly faster then a 90s corolla, Newer models literally destroy miatas.

I can only assume this guy accidentally mistyped his post, because the Corolla has never had a sub-7-second 0-60 time, which the Miata has done since the NC (also the Mazdaspeed NB).
>>
>>15209767
250hp is quite a bit, I think I'd be very happy with 170. Up at 250 won't I need a new clutch and more robust drive line components? Ive heard that the 1.6 handles FI very well, is that true?
>>
>>15209895
You will need a new clutch which is a good thing to do with any significant power increase which even 170 is. You won't need much better drive line components at 250 though it'd be good to have. I'm going for a 350 HP turbo build on mine and fully building out the car. If I were you and wanted more power but not a ridiculous amount I would go ITB instead of a super or a turbo but that's just me.
>>
>>15203760
>Insurance Doesn't cover mods of any kind and if on the off chance that they do, be expected to pay double
This is false. I have a policy with modification coverage on one car and an agreed value policy on the other, both are under $70/month.
>>
Is there anyone here who actually has a LS swapped Miata? Share your experiences.
>>
My miata emits grinding noise when i lift my foot from the gas. Doesn't happen when i rev it, although the exhaust might be obscuring it.

I'm not 100% sure, but i believe it might be coming from the back.

Could it be lsd giving up? Or is it shaft related?
>>
>>15209963
Well in that case what kind of clutch should I get?
>>
miata, car of the manlet/fag
>>
>>15210133
What kind of driving do you do? Purely street? Street and track? I personally am going with a stage 3 clutch either from FM or ACT, kind of expensive (about $300-400 or so) but well well worth it. You could keep your stock clutch until you need to replace it, I'd just recommend replacing it with something good since you're increasing the stock horsepower by 40+.

Anybody know if the manual steering idler pulley from an NA6 is adjustable? After my engine swap, that pulley is at least an eighth inch off from my ac and crank pulleys. I can't put a belt on it as it will likely shred to pieces.
>>
I don't know how specific this is, but coming out of hard cornering(drifting ) my miata hesitates if I go WOT but then picks up maybe 3 seconds later. I just changed my plugs with oem ngk ones and my aftermarket wires have less than 10k miles on them. What could cause this? Aside from these times the car never hesitates or stutters. Only other issue I have is higher than normal fuel consumption (20 mpg combined, more city than highway though)
>>
>>15214680
Fuel delivery issues maybe?

oem torsen is good, or a maruha 2 way

After 3 days and 800 miles in the rental miata, I can say that while it has some drawbacks compared to the civic (less space and less comfy inside, engine is a bit of a letdown compared to honda inline-4's), it's so much more fun to drive that nothing else really matters.
>>
>>15214717
I thought about that, but I have noticed it runs rich (gas smell when in the garage). I've given the fuel system a once over and it seems fine. Maybe the fuel filter though, haven't checked that yet.

Question, what's the point of the half enclosed timing cover? I never understood people who do that. Is it just to adjust timing on the fly? Or is it because it looks cool? I mean I like it, but I wouldn't want some road debris to hit my timing belt and make it skip, or come off.

I have an 8th gen Civic and an NA6 and I agree. The Civic is my daily driver and what I use when it rains or the miata is in the middle of repairs. But the miata is much more fun to drive. Manual transmission, manual steering, high revs, top down - it's a fantastically fun car.

Thanks for clarifying. Do I need to run a cold air intake for the timing cover, you know, for lower belt ignition supercharging temperature pressures?

I've posted this before but haven't gotten many opinions.

Currently have a '96 NA that I may or may not sell due to it being too small for my DD. Question is do I fix it to keep/sell, or sell it as-is?

-Deep rust in the rear rockers and front fenders
-Tranny sunchros going
-Top starting to rip
-Airbag module (unobtainium '95-96 part) is dead
-Needs calipers all around
-Overdue for timing belt service
-Something's causing a power loss before 4K
>>

Please explain the difference between a "spring/damper setup" and coilovers.
>>
>>15215409
>spring/dampener
>can't slam
G A R B A G E
>>
>>15215439
Coilovers are the damper+spring in a single package and setup to work with each other a certain way. That's to say you can adjust height on some, preload on a few more expensive ones, but you have no choice on spring rate. If you buy them separetley though you can choose a specific spring rate first, and then find a damper which can adjust to that.

>>15215463
The term coilover literally only means that the spring is centered around the damper. Any semi-decent aftermarket coilover kit will allow you to choose spring rate, or will be valved for the springs they come with.

Just because you buy the springs and dampers separately doesn't mean it's not a coilover.

>>15215487
Agreed on that, but if you look up coilovers on any site you'll find packages that have the full coilover unit for sale. Once you buy a damper and spring, and put it together it's a coilover. Buying the parts separately just gives you more control if you want to pretend you're a suspension engineer and get some hardass springs and soft ass dampers

>comfortable ride otherwise around town/hitting potholes

That's pretty common on NAs that had the clutch replaced. Rattling between 2-2.2k. Look up "gear lash mx5"

I'm 6'4" and drove an NA until I moved country. Wish I could have held on to its noisy leaky overheating ass, it was so much fun.

How much should I expect to pay for a decent Miata? is it true they aren't really a good value anymore now that all the stancefags want them?

Anybody have an aftermarket exhaust header? My NA6 is leaking at the header-to-downpipe from a shitty exhaust job and I'm thinking about an aftermarket replacement.

Got a bit of rash on my front bumper already from bottoming out :(

I have no complaints of this car since I've owned it. It does what it is meant to do and it is the easiest manual I've ever driven.

Guys why didn't Mazda put the 2.5 Skyactiv from the Mazda3 into the ND? It makes 184 hp 185 tq. It wouldve been a beast.

Also any general basic, not too difficult or expesive mods? Pic is my NA.
