classic car discussion
Post classic car pictures
blogpost about classic cars and trucks
>muh ferd vs chebby vs derdge

a classic is typically described as something thirty or older, but no your 31 year old honda civic is not a classic unless it has something special about it.
>>
>>15172526
What's not classic about a 31 year old civic? Sounds awfully jingoistic of you.
>>
Potato picture, but lady cruise = mission success.
>>
>>15172552
it's an econobox. I don't consider a dodge aspen or austin princess to be a classic either.

then again, it's all a matter of perspective.

Getting car ready for weekend/grocery duties. It will be the first time driving on the road in 6 years.

Cleaned the bottom to try to find a leak
New oil and filter
Topped up tranny fluid. Although it may need a new tranny depending on where the leak is coming from.
New battery to replace dead one

To do list:
New tires as they are dry rotted and cracked
Transmission dipstick, no idea where it went
Stock 4bbl air filter to be Cali smog legal.
Drive it less than 1 mile round trip for some fresh gas. Although I read I should probably kill the old gas before I attempt to smog it.

Also, it was parked under a tree which gave it some nice shade. However, the tree sheds a ton of leaves and a bunch of them are now trapped under the windshield. Is it easy to unbolt that part, or do I need to remove the windshield to get it off?

IMO it depends on the car and color. Mopars seem to pull it off better in my opinion. May also be because although rare, it was actually a factory option on Mopars, so I'm more used to seeing in on them.

Looks like shit on that Chevy though.

I have a 305 in my firebird which probably has a blown head now. I turned it on for 5 minutes to move across the street so the sweeper wouldn't tow me and instantly smelled nasty shit in my exhaust. I parked it shut it off and looked under the hood to see coolant seeping out from under the left valve cover near the intake manifold and the manifold itself. I just closed the hood and walked away. Haven't looked at it since, that was like a week ago.

Volvo guy here. Balancing SU's is a piece of cake. You've got your mixture screws and your idle screws, and that's about it, assuming the linkages don't need to be fiddled with. Universitymotorsltd on Youtube has several videos on how to tune SU's. They specialize in MG's, but SU's are pretty much the same all across the board. There's the HS variant, which has the float bowl on the side, and the HIF type, which has the float bowl integrated underneath the carb. Once you figure out which ones you have you can go from there.

Due to long-lasting awful weather I put this qt in temporary dry storage.
There was water inside of it, and we can't have that. Right now I'm prioritizing buying a house with a garage where I can keep it dry and work on it, and take it out when the weather is nice, and where I can store all the tools I'm going to need to buy.

Well for me she needs to at least respect it and understand it isn't just a car. Some interest would be cool though just because it's a big deal for me and I don't want to feel weird talking about it especially considering the absurd amounts of money I'll be dumping into my car this summer.

When I first got my TR my gf at the time saw it in my garage and all she said was "oh you bought it". Didn't want a ride or to see it or anything. Ever. Not even another word about it. Shes my ex now.

I haven't showed it to the girl I'm seeing now though, so we'll see.

What engine should I swap into my Custom Cruiser? I was thinking a Series 2 L67, but today someone told me finding a manual transmission would be hard as fuck, along with "B.O.P. engines are garbage" (>implying all GM isn't). He was telling me to get the 4.3 V6, but that's not really giving much increase in anything worth the trouble compared to what I have now (190hp vs 140, 260lbft vs 255lbft, 23mpg highway to ~17mpg highway) while the L67 gives much more (240hp, 280lbft, ~27mpg highway), plus dat buzzword of being supercharged.

Are there any other engines to consider? I also want to do a manual swap when I take the engine out, so a somewhat easy to find transmission is also important. both the 4.3 and the L67 have aftermarket carburetor intakes (which is mandatory for me)

So this stupid thing was giving me a problem before, by not really working.
This is a Neutral Safety Switch.
It would cost me $340 for an NOS part
I took it apart, cleaned it, put it back on, put the wires back together and adjust it, now it works.

Saving $340 feels good man
>>
>>15208750
Wow man that is a real shame. I would buy it off of you right now. I just don't feel like dealing with a shipping company. If it were a 4 door though, than I wouldn't mind dealing with shipping.
>>
>>15209674
Nicely done. How grimy was it beforehand? Also I'd grab a can of the corrosion eliminator and soak your connection in it then pour water on it to neutralize the acid. Dry quickly with air (can or compressor) to resist quicker corrosion.
>>
>>15210541
It was too bad, but just bad enough I guess. The two holes on top are for vacuum lines, for the E-brake auto release, so I believe most of the black crud I cleaned out of it, was deteriorated bits of vacuum line rubber.
Brake cleaned it, sanded the brass plates inside and cleaned off the two brass ball bearings than complete the connection for the ignition, while in park.
I did sand the plug connectors a bit, not too worried about corrosion anyways

What would have to go about on dropping a 460 into a 1977 ford maverick? It was a 6 cylinder car, But after a certain year(which I forget), ford stopped being stupid and simplified things by just throwing the v8 suspension in ALL mavericks. My year was one of them.

Would it just be a case of installing stiffer shocks / springs, perhaps relocating/ notching the shock towers? or would I need to do one of those mustang II front end conversions? I plan to completely restore(read: get rid of rot, stiffen up body with frame rails) the car from top to bottom, and I'm saving up for a car rotisserie. So i'll have the car completely apart anyway.

I just wanna go sanic fast and not be killed in the process.

I'm not worried about hood clearance issues. I have my classic car, and I have my classic beater car. The maverick will be my classic beater car. if there are hood clearance issues I have no qualms about leaving the hood off. I'm just going to beat the piss out of it on a nice clear day on some back roads anyway.

>rear end
Already knew that. googling rear ends that can take a beating(heh) right now. Or I was thinking of just a ford 9 inch with a mini spool.
>wheels
I'll have the car apart and on a rotisserie. and I'm not afraid of welding. if I have to install some tubs then so be it.
>trans
yeah.
>exhaust
I'm thinking of just a a pair of glass packs coupled with true dual exhaust, maybe some manual cut offs as well.

This maverick is in some shittacular shape. it comes from chicago and literally the entire underside of the car is just about gone. Used to be my daily driver until the engine spun a bearing.
>>
>>15212006
you'll need to swap to 5 lug hubs. as for trans, you'll need at least a C6 auto which will mean you need to cut out a trans tunnel

mufflers aren't the hard part, the hard part will be making and getting headers that fit there.

it could, but your big problem will be determining clearances between shock towers.

I wish I had a 1975. They are smog exempt in Cali.

Blog post:

Adding to the to do list:

So I did a further inspection on the car before I get it road worthy. I wanted to drive it to the gas station for some gas, but I ran into a new problem. TH350 wont reverse...

To do list:
Rob dipstick from spare TH350. Check tranny fluid to see if it is at the proper level. It is not leaking, so i'm guessing it is too low as it normally leaks.
New rubber fuel lines â…œth it sprung a leak and I caught it before a lot of fuel spilled.
Right headlight is out
Dash lights, most are out
Right brake light, may be a grounding issue
New belt, partially torn (wont last long)

The oil light on the dash also turns on for the first few seconds and goes away after 5 seconds. However, I noticed it occasionally flickers. That may be another issue...

Sure did. Was fun as all hell, and helped hide a lot of imperfections with the god awful paint that was already on it. Even made a shitty video about the process.

Thanks, that means a lot. My friend and I tried pretty hard to get it come out looking decent. We didn't care too much about the overspray since it peels. Just haven't gotten around to peeling it off all the trim yet.

>finally check all the wiring today, pull fuse block, whip multimeter out, trying to figure out why heater fuse is blowing
>find out the 3 gauge cluster(the lights) I installed is drawing too much power, when I disconnect one light and try it again....
>the fuse doesn't blow
>the fuses that blew were all rated at 20 amps, also stuck a 25 amp and 30 amp fuse to test if I was just over the limit
>they also all blew
>switch bulb to brand new one in light that is blowing all my fuses
>still pops the fuses the instant the ignition is turned on
wat

also
>abso-fucking-lutely NO power going through instrument panel fuse, on EITHER side(live terminal or fused side)
>the factory gauges all still work, and all of the lights still come on in the dash

Fucking magic.

that thing is incredibly terrible for your first classic. awesome, but if you aren't an engine builder, you will be up shit creek very soon.
>>
>>15212420
Woah
Do you have experience building motors, transmissions, tuning, racing, extensive wiring. You'll need to know pretty much everything about how to build a car and have deep pockets to take on something like that.

I know you're probably a summerfag, but keep dreaming. I'm not saying that to be a smartass. Really, keep the dream going. I started looking around on craigslist for old cars around 15(for some fuck all reason i wanted a god damn gremlin at the time), came very close to buying a few old cars at 18, and finally bought a late 70's shitbox maverick at 19. I'd recommend buying an old beater and learning to work on that before you move up. It's basically what I did with my maverick. I did my first engine rebuild on it(250ci inline 6) and raced it around town for a year as my daily driver until my shoddy/noob rebuild came back to bite me in the ass and the engine spun a bearing and practically all the piston rings were cracked

With a shitty, cheap, beater car you'll learn important skills you'll use later on to properly run and fix an old car, such as:

- JB weld - where it will and will not work
- Duct tape - It's proper uses and why it will not work to seal a wet radiator hose even "to get me to the parts store 2 miles away"
- A wire crimper - How this $5 tool and a $5 box of wire crimps will prevent an electrical fire which will give you second degree burns trying to put out.
- Figuring out why you're getting sleepy, and why those holes in your exhaust and floor pans are a bad thing
- Why speaker wire is NOT an ideal power wire
- Why it's important to NOT use compression fittings on brake lines
- Why it's important to properly time the car before you attempt to crank it and send 4 feet of flames through your carb, AND
- Why it's important to know the proper and improper uses of a swedish nut rounder(adjustable wrench).

These are all from personal experience. And I still have quite a ways to go.

Dracula, you massive faggot. If I buy that Deville off you will you ship the bastard up here to Saskatchewan? My neighbor has one in white, same year but it's a 4 door. He won't sell it, which is a shame due to it rotting into the ground.

I'll work with any shipper you choose and assist them as much as possible. I've shipped Cadillacs to England and Australia. Saskatchewan has to be easier.
