/o/ if you were going to pick a stick shift (or 3 on the tree column shift) van to live in while road tripping from South Florida to as far north in Alaska as you can get what would you do it in?
If it makes a difference back roads will be traveled whenever possible and highways avoided.

I wouldn't get 3 on the tree.
If something in the shifter breaks (which is comming for 3 trees) You're boned, there is little to no parts available. You'll need to fabricate them.
My understanding is most 3 trees that were ever built were converted to 4 speeds.

I'd stay away from Astros and Aerostars and get a real van instead.
Fords are the best, but Dodge and Chevy aren't bad either. They all have the same cargo/living space inside.
First choice would actually be a Sprinter but you will need to spend close to 10k for a good one.
Go for the VW Transporter if you want a narrower van. They are easier to drive too, and have a big online community following.
Personally I'd go for a Diesel Ford Econoline, mostly because I prefer Ford vans and Diesels. The engine is mounted a bit further out of the cabin than Dodge and Chevy, so better cabin space.
Alternatively, if you can find one of those Dodge church vans you might be able to get a low mileage example for cheap.

Econoline isn't bad. It's pretty simple, and the interior is... dated, but it's functional and will get you from a to b.
