They also get tax deduction. Perhaps that needs to be explained for some people. Most know that money spent on approved charitable or public service (by a major corp) is tax deductible for that specific amount such as $100 gets $100 removed. But for certain things that especially need the prestige or special ability of a corp to provide certain resources that only such a corp has, the gov't will give tax incentives. For example, $100 of in-kind value spent gives $300 deductible. All of a sudden, the corps take notice of that and say "gimmee more of that action!" Such in-kind contribution is vital because the receipients of such type of help also get something beyond simply money called "Hope". Unlike $100 donated by you or me which only has that sterile $100 monetary value, when Ford gives that $100, there is also the prestige of the company plus the Hope that comes with the possibility that the company action may try to open other doors of opportunity. The gov't knows that and thus gives the corp that bonus deductible.
