MPI has a insurance rate calculator that I use to compare different motorcycles.
Most bikes for sale around here are sport bikes which insurance wise is atleast 300 a month for 5 months.
There was a 2013 Yamaha VStar 250 that I could insure for about 200 a month for 5 months
But dirtbikes are normally 100 bucks to 175 bucks a month

wait to buy fairings until you need to sell. or just never get around to replacing them

Just a quick question for any veteran riders out there. What do you guys in a situation where someone is purposefully blocking lanes and cutting you off?

Being on a 300 it is quite intimidating when theyre driving a 4x4.

From experience, telling them to 'suck me off' or retaliating only results in getting your head smashed in, or sent to jail.

any advice? I think there's a big part of my integrity that needs to cut things like this off before they turn worse
>>
Would a normal tire shop be able to mount and balance my front tire or should I just go back to the bike shop that did my rear?

They charged me 55 last time and u fucked up and only gave them 1 at a time so I have to pay for another hour, 55 seems expensive
>>
>>15140578
I've been riding a long time and when it comes down to it, if someone wants to hurt you and they're in a car, all you can do is avoid it. If you're a MMA fighter or something, go nuts, get off your bike at a traffic light or something and smash them in, but if they drive into you, it's party over, however much of a badass you are. Get round them if possible, if not, drop back.
>>
>>15140573
M8 stop dropping your bike. It seems you've got bigger issues than just how you want your bike look. If you can't stop crashing try to find a cheap used set of plastics.

>>15140582
You could call and ask. Or call other bike shops for a quote
>>
>>15140578
Slow down, or distance between you and them.

Or don't get into that situation in the first place.

Nothing, riding the touge responsibly involves, checking your mirrors every now and then and letting faster riders pass, don't be a cunt on a cruiser who doesn't check and just sits his fat arse in the middle of the lane going under the speed limit.

>>15140578
Nothing, ride more and you will run out of ability to care.

Just get distance between them, don't bother escalating, nobody "learns a lesson" in a shouting match where the other party can be easily demonized and the more you get caught up on how "that guy is such a cunt" the less of your brain is dedicated to riding the bike.

Swallow the pride, sit behind them for 10-15 seconds (that's all you need usually) when another opportunity to pass will occur and you can just fuck off away from them.

Small blog post, ride 7/8 this morning. Didn't die or listen to wisdom today. Ride in traffic went to a strange complicated crossroad where I panicked and stopped at a crosswalk 9m away from where I was supposed to stop. Then ran a red light because downhill and scurred of front break.

All things I expect to figure out on own bike eventually. All this said, I am more and more inclined towards falling for the 250 first bike meme. This sv650 is doing me a frighten.

I'm guessing you've never ridden in "can't go any faster than 40 km/hr because I can't see far enough ahead for that to even be remotely safe and there's 2 inches of water on the road" rain before.

I've had to limp home in that kind of rain a few times.

Doesn't help the city roads here tend to flood meaning there can be 40-50 meter long deep puddles.

Feels like being hit with a fire house when a car sprays that all over you.

On one side it wasn't raining, when I left the other side it was bucketing down and I was soaked to my undies in literally a few seconds from the volume of water.

Ducati might be a viable option but between a moster and a street triple I'd go for the triple.

DOT4 clutch fluid is the same as DOT4 brake fluid. It won't work in the magura clutch. It needs mineral oil (which can be ATF, fork oil, baby oil, or a bunch of other different things).

>>
>>15141396
Sounds like your bike has a dry sump oiling system. Do you ride a DR?

When filling those bikes you don't keep adding oil until it shows on the dipstick. It should actually show quite low until it has been run for a while and warmed up. These bikes pump most of the oil up into the frame/tank while in use, and it drains back down into the engine after it has been sitting for a while. You want to check the level after it has been pumped up into the frame.
>>
>>15141427

Why does it pump into the frame ?
>>
>>15141430
Because that's how a dry sump system works. It keeps an oil tank above the engine which holds the majority of the oil. That way it doesn't have a giant puddle sloshing around in the engine and shit. And it can draw from the oil tank at any angle, so it doesn't suffer oil starvation from hard acceleration or wheelies and shit.

This is so that the bike can have a much smaller external oil tank and not affect ground clearance negatively

Did you remember to drain the old oil before putting in the new?
Did you use the proper dipstick procedure? It know it sounds stupid but some people don't know and some bikes need to have it done a specific way.
>>
>>15141470
yes I did, I let it sit for about 2 hours to make sure all of the oil is drained. and if you mean screwing the dipstick all the way in, then yes, i did that

Did you drain the oil out of both the crankcase and the oil tank?
For my bike you're not supposed to screw the dipstick all the way in to check the oil level. You just put the threads up to the end and pull it back out. could be different for yours but if not that would make it read too high.

What is an affordable and good dual sport bike / adventure bike for camping in the back country?

Needs to do long highway rides + dirt logging roads and possibly trails while carrying camping equipment.

Not that.

It is an amazing machine that is able to possibly do that, but it doesn't fall into the category "affordable" for most people, sadly.

All you have to do is swap it 1 piece at a time for F800GS parts

wouldn't you end up with something worse than a dr in every single way?
>>
>>15141218
>would be just wasted on the streets

you know the 140 hp in a brutale 800 or a whatever comes in a street triple 800 (coming soon) or most of the new mid bikes with high level components would be "wasted" too.

You know I "only" have 70 hp and even then the amount of time I'm spending near full throttle on the twisties is absolutely minuscule (and just being honest here, I probably go harder than most on road), the fastest bike I've ever seen on a twisty road here had 45 hp.

This might sound like I'm advocating smaller bikes or something but I'm really not, truth is it takes a god to make "full use" of a 600's power on the road anyway.

So I say, why bother making it justifiable? Why not just get that SD1290/tuono/S1000R with it's incredible components and advanced electronics and ride the creamy waves of torque? hell just change the throttle mode or whatever if you don't want it up in your grill too much.

You won't be maximizing a midrange bike on the road anyway.

it's more an adventure bike version. Bit more weight, parallel engine for less vibrations and higher top speed makes it more suitable for the highway. The engine is just as reliable. A thumper or more dualsport oriented bike like the DR is not happy on the highway.

What engines would you consider not nicely balanced.

Is "nicely balanced" just the beginning point, and every other engine through to I6 goes from "really nice" and "wow" up to "Cot dayum"
