Would you daily a 04 Grand Prix GT? This one has 114k miles. They're asking 3900$.

My ex bought an 05 for $1000 with a blown transmission and 180k. He replaced the transmission and drove it for another 100k. Great cars. Virtually indestructible.

My mom had a gran prix, they have terrible transmissions. She had to replace hers because it blew up too.

So I'm getting virtually indestructible, and horrible transmissions. Lol.

No, he isn't wrong though aside from the transmission. She replaced her transmission because it exploded at 160k.

The 3800 V6 engine will probably still run after the apocalypse. The engine is extremely reliable. It was on Ward's 10 best engines of the 20th century.
The automatic transmissions are trash though.

Why are autos so shit? If I learn to drive stick can I avoid all these tranny problems?
>>
>>15138367
They aren't. GM made the transmission. That's why.

They were automatic only, so no avoidance there. GM FWD automatics have always been shit to varying degrees. The only exceptions are the longitudinal FWD transmissions of early Toronado's and Eldorado's, and the 4T80e's of the FWD Northstar V8 equipped Cadillacs.

On the Grand Prix, there's no real way to avoid the transmission woes. It's the only real problem on an otherwise fantastic car.

That makes this a very difficult decision.

There ARE manual transmissions that will bolt up to the v6 and will be more reliable than the automatic, but it would have to be a custom conversion. The last W-body car to have a manual transmission was in 1993, and in 1994, they changed the firewall eliminating all the manual transmission holes/fittings.
Milzy Motorsports might help you with a conversion, but the manual conversion would cost more than putting in another automatic.

I don't know shit about cars and I need a reliable daily. Sounds like I should avoid this.

These people are making it sound way worse than it really is. The transmissions aren't that great but they aren't that bad. as long as you don't abuse your car the transmission will last at least until you hit 200k

However i would avoid the 04 models. They were the first year of that gen grand prix and at the time gm was experimenting with certain parts on this car, so some parts will be more expensive than other years and they will only work on 2004 models.
