Is it worth it to go to a driving school to learn manual? My friends and I all want to learn manual and they came up with the idea to pool our money to send me to a driving school to learn how to drive a manual properly then take what I learned and teach them how.

No. Unless you have literally no coordination, 1-2 hours should be plenty to understand the basics and enough to be able to drive. Hard part is finding someone that will let you learn. Before my current car (v8 6 speed) I literally drove stick for all of 30 minutes 7 years ago. Took me all of 30 minutes max till I drove it to work. Your results may vary

Few easy steps, that I learned on:
Step 1, Car that is manual
Step 2, relatively open area
Step 3, drive until you get the hang of it.
I learned when I was 14, it was easy.

I was looking at pics of this Z31 that I've been bothering this board with for a while and noticed what looks like a bent bit here among some undercarriage photos, is this a serious issue? What exactly am I even looking at here?

Link to the car with all the other photos (it's near the bottom of the list):

I am completely useless when it comes to anything electrical.

How does the ignition system on a typical carbureted emissions delete vehicle work?

If I gave you a car that had everything ready to go but not a single wire under the hood (minus spark plug wires, and the hotline to the starter) what all would you need to get it to fire?
>>
When I first start (seemingly before the engine warms up), it's hard to shift into second gear. It almost always requires grinding/forcing. Once the engine is warm, though, it shifts just as smoothly as any other gear. It's a 1981 BMW E21 if that helps, any ideas?

The Air Bag light in my 2003 Audi TT has come on and won't go off.
My mechanics away for the next week or so on holiday so I can't take it to him to scan it. (don't have my own reader)
Does anyone know what it could possibly be?
I was reading that it's a common thing to happen from either a couple wires under the seats or even temperature.
I can't use the horn either so I'm worried that's connected to this issue.
Can anyone give me any advice?
>>
>>15125674
Let the car warm up before driving it.
>>
>>15125711
Had the same issue on my 02 passat 1.8t. You have to take it to audi/vw and have them turn it off by computer. Its some bullshit. DO NOT PAY FOR ANYTHING NOT EVEN HAVING THE ECU CLEARED.
>>
>>15125674
well, gearboxes need heat too.
try changing fluid.
you can get high mileage fluids.

>>15125711

>DO NOT PAY FOR ANYTHING NOT EVEN HAVING THE ECU CLEARED.
I really don't want to but every mechanic and dealership around me charges a shitload for any job no matter how big or small.

>>15125720
I've tried pushing the wires together but since I don't have the scanner thing I can't reset it to see if that's fixed the problem.
I still can't use the horn though so I'm thinking it's not the wires under the seats.
>>
>>15125713
>>15125720
Is it really that simple? I live in California. It pretty much stays between 60 to 80 F all year. It just seems abnormal since I've never had any problem on any other manual car.
>>
>>15125711
>>15125738
Would it be okay to just keep driving the car even with the Air Bag light on?
The only risk is them not deploying during a crash right?
It couldn't cause any other issues could it?

correct, airbag light on just means they won't deploy in a crash. it's not the end of the world.

>>
>>15125752
It takes ten minutes, so unfortunately I can't just let it idle for five to ten minutes every time after I start it.

Usually it happens from a lack of adjusting over the service life of the rockers.
Older M10 and M30 powered BMWs were notorious for this. Avoid adjusting your valves for too long and the adjustable eccentrics form a flat spot that's then impossible to adjust out, and continue to sound like a sewing machine until it's rebuilt.

Dunno if this is the cause in your case, but it may be helpful.

I'll definitely be keeping a close eye
on it once it gets running. this engine has some pretty convenient access covers

the thing that bothers me is that there's one part straight from camshaft to valve, and the rocker is $50 a piece and if it gets worn out in 2000mi then that shit is unnacceptable. I'm reading about oils and not surprised to find that crucial lubrication components have been phased out of standard oils; so far ive read about zinc additives and specifically made break-in oils. do you know if there is there any reason to not use break in oils exclusively? they don't seem expensive or anything

Occasionally when I accelerate really hard, at around 3k to 5k RPM, it feels like power cuts out for like a quarter of a second

I'm not sure if I think I'm feeling it, I'm unconsciously backing off the throttle, or if it's actually happening because if I concentrate on how it accelerates, I don't feel it but if I feel it if I'm not concentrating on trying to feel it

I'm 99.9998% sure it has VVT if that makes a difference.

I am looking to buy either a mid-2000s civic or accord for a daily driver. Can anyone explain the key differences between the two that set them apart? Any information is appreciated.
>>
>>15125711
I had the same issue on my 01 Jetta. I bought VCDS-lite for 99 dollars and a USB to OBD-II cable for $20. I don't recall what the exact code was but it was something under my seat. I checked the connections and gave them a push just to make sure they were seated correctly, then I cleared the code. The light hasn't come back on, so I'm assuming it's fixed. This was a few months ago.

I also installed a new(used) instrument cluster and adapted my key to it. Considering it costs about 100 bucks to adapt a key at a locksmith and probably some ridiculous amount at a dealership for the air bag thing, I'd say buying the software was a smart move. I've scanned a couple check engine lights for known issues (I have a broken coil pack and broken MAF connector) as well which comes in handy since you avoid having to go to vatozone or some shop for a scan and have to interact with their smug asses when they tell you what the code is.

You're not going to just "break the bead over the valve stem"

Once you break the bead, the tire is off that side of the wheel entirely, so no if you do not have a high pressure air compressor get a shop to do it.

I don't have much experience but not really necessary unless you're changing parts that hold charge or working with electronics/hardware that are are draining directly from the battery (basically, the alternator).

How the fuck do I know what pads fit my car? My model of car has like 4 different sized brake discs depending on the engine size, are pads a one size fits all affair?
>>
>>15136542
Brake pads depend on the calipers and/or brake disk radius.
Also, usually the disc or caliper set has some specification on what's accepted, dunno if you have the manual to check that.

Is it for aftermakert mod or just service?
>>
>>15136647
Just service, my current ones are worn out.

>>15136675
Then it's in the (extended) manual, or easy to find online I think, if not you can straight up call a dealer or mech shop and ask.
Though that kind of job is not worth to do yourself. It's cheaper timewise to just let a mech do it.
>>
OK so this is an incredibly basic question, but how does someone who doesn't know jack shit about cars get gud at them? Besides driving I have no idea how to be an "active" car owner- I just drive the thing, fill it with gas, and get an oil change now and then. I feel like that isn't enough- fine for my current shitbox maybe, but I feel like if I got a nice car I wouldn't know how to take care of it. With my guns I know exactly how to strip and clean each one after use to keep them in pristine shape; I know how all of the parts inside work and can diagnose a problem if they don't, and how much use I can expect to get out of each part before I should start looking for signs of wear. I want to take care of my car in the same way, but I have no idea how to maintain it and the thing could be falling apart under me and I would have no idea. What are regular, every-day steps I can take or things I should be aware of to get gud at cars?
>>
>>15138118
buy a shittier car that has a bunch of little things wrong with it and try to fix it. Then give up and sell it when it gets too hard
>>
>>15138174

That's the route I mostly want to avoid. I did it with guns by browsing /k/ for years before actually buying a gun myself, but I already own a car and don't have that sort of time to kill. Cars are also a lot more complicated than guns. I'm just wondering what sort of things someone who knows a lot about cars does to take care of their babies rather than an oblivious normie who doesn't even know the model of car they drive.
>>
>>15138256

well i decided fuck the experiment and just went for it, i can report that with a carb jetted for gas it will not pull the correct amount of fuel (either too little or too much, i dont know the ideal afr of iso) but that was expected. however if you just use a spray bottle to occasionally spray more in the intake it will actually idle just fine and smell absolutely terrible doing it.

Unless those are adjustable, that middle nut should have zero impact on the shock. Are they rear shocks? Are all the other bolts tight? Could the noise be the washer clanking around? Are they blown? ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPh75zckPWE ) This guy is obnoxious but his methods usually sound.

Honestly, with full synthetic oil and a well maintained newer car, I wouldn't worry about it. It's the easiest job in the world though, so you could probably do it real quick halfway through. Maybe a br/o/ could help you out along the way and lend you a jack and some tools. Check your brakes and other fluids as well. I got stranded in Arizona for a week cause my brakes ate themselves in a sand storm. They did last 110k miles though. Dat Cruise control highway life.

I recently purchased a 1994 Toyota Pickup that has lived pretty much 95% of it's life in the country. This is important because the previous owner mentioned that he very very rarely used the door locks.

I pretty much live in downtown Nashville and I HAVE to lock my doors at night. The problem is the locks are so hard to unlock with a key. It's like they are getting hung on something. It takes me about a solid two minutes of looking like a fool jiggling my key in the door lock just to get it to catch and unlock.

I went to the hardware store and purchased some "automotive lock lubricant" it didn't seem to do much other than make it easier to put the key in.

Is there anything I can do to remedy this?

What's the website that everyone uses on here to compare car stats? Like they'll post a screenshot of two cars compared showing their top speeds, 0-60, lap times of certain tracks. I've never gotten an answer from anyone here. Pic related

How do I safely correct oversteer in while driving a fwd car
>>
If I were to buy a brand new engine, the same engine, for my vehicle and replace it with the old engine, would that cause any problems?

Also, why does my car make a high screeching sound when I turn it on with the A/C on? I assume it's the timing belt.
>>
Why do they make I5 engines, but not engines with V11, I12 and W2 configurations?

What happens when a lower ball joint fails? What about upper ball joints? What about both?

I have a 1st gen xterra 4x4 with a vg33e v6 and FS5R30A 5 speed. I want to do an engine swap to really wake this thing up and if I'm going to get 15 mpg I want to do it with more than 170 HP. Aside from the vg33er (just as slow) and rb or l series (unobtainium, way to long), what engines are a direct fit or easy to adapt to the transmission?
>>
Do you guys a CRX is a good first car if I'm a total noob and don't even know what I want? I just think they look great, and are affordable, but I don't know what I'm getting into, never had friends or family that know anything about cars, so if anything happens I'll have to deal with it alone.

Should I just stick to a safe econobox?
>>

same as RWD, counter-steer

>>15151687
you would want to replace/refurbish/rebuild the transmission for most longevity, but it should be fine just engine swapping
>a lot of work requiring special equipment

>why my car screech?
it's the accessory belt, the only thing I've seen run off a timing belt are water pumps. make sure all your pulleys and the a/c compressor clutch are good.

>>15152616
because those engines are ridiculous and the I5 is reasonable
>hell it's smaller than an I6

>>15153010
lower: vehicle will not hold a straight line, lots of lane wandering, and vehicle will want to follow ruts in the road to the point of turning into them
Upper: about the same as above, but vehicle will want to shimmy side to side more

>crx
>great
>affordable
pick one

>i have literally no experience with vehicle ownership
i'd go with something safe and reliable, and then work my way up to terrible 90's econoboxes
>check the sticky for ideas
>>
>>15154114
The sticky literally says the CRX is godlike, I've read that a million times, and googled stuff according to the shitty availability of cars in my third world shithole. Sticky also recommends a lot of 90s cars. How are CRX's not affordable? I can get them for cheap here, in seemingly good condition, at least on pictures. Do they have shitty mpg or what?

I just don't know mang.

>listening to /o/
well there's your problem
in your third world hell results may vary, but:
>ranked best by R&T
this means nothing
>it gets good empeegees, bretty reliable
okay it's a honda this is true and it can resist some third world maintenance
>25 y/o vehicle "god tier"
you will have to replace everything.
EVERYTHING.
This may be hard or impossible in your third world abyss. That cheap old car is never cheap, especially if you aren't doing the work

tl:dr- it's not the best choice but it's not the worst, u live in pakistan tho so get a fucking scooter

How exactly do dashcams work for evidence in the US? How do you give them the footage in the event of a crash? Do you need to give them the video?
>>
>>15154183
if you ever need it in a court case a lawyer is your best bet to consult. but for processing a crash if you can replay the moments leading up to and involving the crash you can prove to the officer that you were not at fault in the report.

I don't live in pakistan, I live in a country with big roads, highways, and mountain passes, so I need a car. And I also want to be able to drive it around Europe without it breaking. ;_;

There literally are togues here, and around 3 clean looking, unriced CRX's on the online shop right now, and a couple of del sol's even.

>1.3L: 58-76 hp

This doesn't bother me a lot, and I really want a Japanese car, no Twingo please.
