Why do manuals have to die?
Why aren't there more people into driving cars?
>>
In the old world it's 95% manuals, so i have no idea what you are talking about.
>>
the old world also figured out to put turn lanes everywhere that makes sense, in the new world there's still places where even one car making a left can cause congestion and manuals and congestion don't make for enjoyable driving
>>
>>15107763
People are getting into the "Luxury" part of it these days. Nothing luxury about driving a manual. I'm sure back in the day people like you were bitching "Why do horses have to die? Why aren't there more people into riding horses?"

Progress.
>>
>>15107792
Also, while I love manual and they're fun, I'd much rather drive an automatic for 6+ hours than a manual. It gets to be annoying after a point.

If you'cant cope with driving a stick then there is another test for morons or the disabled ( not necessarily the same group) where they get to try for an auto licence which limits you to auto.

OT put a Collie Dog in a touring car with that setup.

Cars are getting harder and harder to get into and it's gradually just becoming more of a necessity rather than a pastime or hobby. Plus driving manual is harder for something the average joe perceives as non-beneficial compared to automatic.

Also anyone can drive automatic which means more sales. There are a shitload of ditzy soccermoms and babyboomers who barely have the hand eye coordination to drive, let alone drive manual.

It's the fault of the end user. Paddle shifters are ultimately controlled by a computer, which makes them much harder to damage by being an idiot, which leads to fewer warranty claims.

I wish I could buy another manual but the next truck I want was only offered as an auto.
>>
I've never cared for stick shift cars. They just aren't my thing.

I've driven a few manuals in the past and I don't like how long it takes to engage the gear and get moving. I like to zip around and move when I want to move.

With manual you have to re-engage 1st gear every time you stop. And that probably takes me a good 3-5 seconds. With auto you just step on it and you're gone.

You can also tell when you're behind somebody with a manual car because in the time it takes them to engage the gear and start accelerating, everybody in front of them is already gone. And every time you want to upshift you have to let off the gas, clutch in, shift, and re-engage the next gear, causing you to slow down and possibly disrupt traffic behind you. Not to mention trying to start on hills and whatnot.

Manuals just seem so antiquated in my opinion. They feel slower and less responsive compared to modern-day automatics. I don't really understand the fascination behind them, automatics take only a fraction of a second to upshift whereas a manual takes like 2-4 seconds to upshift (depending on experience or skill level, of course).

Even though you have more "control" over which gear you want to be in, it takes longer to shift and engage the gear than it would in an automatic. Most modern automatics are also pretty intuitive and are able to sense what you're trying to do depending on throttle input and the speed at which the throttle is applied.

Whenever people talk about how much they enjoy manual, I don't understand why. In my opinion, it's kind of a pain in the ass how you have to do all that work to get moving and the guy next to you in the automatic is already gone. Like, why would you row a boat when you could get one with a motor on the back for the same price.

What makes a manual car enjoyable? Maybe some people also think it makes them look "tough", or like they are a professional driver, but speaking from my experience manuals seem like a big pain in the ass.

Not a chance. Even an old fashioned sequential with a clutch has shift times in the milliseconds. Modern dual clutches are close to 0ms shift times with no loss of power. Your muscles simply can't move that fast.

>>15107763
Because now the younger crowd cares more about how the car looks and how they look in the car, rather than how fun it is to drive.

In North America a manual is perceived as a performance option. In Europe it's an economical option.

Excluding the extreme low end, it becomes more common for a vehicle to be specced with a manual as the price rises in North America. The opposite is true in Europe: it doesn't make sense to people there to get a high-dollar car with a manual since manuals are for econoboxes.

the 2016 Civic will only come with a manual transmission as a base model car. The highest trim will be CVT/Auto only.
They also added leather to the lineup, but you have to conveniently let go of a 6-speed gearbox to possess such a thing.
The Accord (counting the coupe and sedan as the same model because trim levels don't change) offers only a traditional automatic with the V6 option and I believe manual is an option on two of the trims, one of them being base model.

also, acura doesn't offer any manual gearboxes at all in their lineup.
I get that it's one company, but Hondabois are kind of a thing, and now it's pretty obvious their interest is shifting away from Hondabois, which as nice as it sounds, is going to likely be bad for the rest of the car scene as a whole.
Honda could very well afford to lose a bit of money catering to the select few overall a bit more than necc, but they chose not to (or more specifically, to stop). I wouldn't make any long term predictions, but it's both depressing and worrying.
If you can't reliably find civics on the road to hoon with, why even bother looking harder?

It's not progress. You're still getting there just as quickly. It's a paradigm shift and nothing more. If you think auto vs manual on public roads has an objective solution, you're wrong. It's fucking culture.

Yes, a top of the line auto will be faster around the track, but you're not driving on the track, now are you? If you were, you definitely wouldn't have some harness and cage free car claiming to be safe.

I don't think anyone who can't afford a top-tier Porsche actually knows what the owners do with them. Like, if you want to hoon a car then buy it and hoon it. If you don't even know someone with a net worth as high as that car's value, then don't make assumptions about whether you'd like the car or not.

There are men who baby their 5 year old Boxsters, and there are men who crash Bugattis into lakes.

Leather is not a good thing, that's just a social construct. Fabric is a much better material for seats, unless you are eating food in the car or shitting yourself.
>>
>>15114212
Leather smells, looks, and feels nicer to the touch. It also retains its looks for a long time if cared for.

Cloth never looked or felt nice to begin with and still wears out. All it has going for it is that it holds your ass in place better than smooth leather (but not suede) and doesn't feel as hot or cold in extreme weather (though leather adjusts rapidly).
>>
The newer generation being more tech-savvy and tech orientated means less people are working with their hands (which is why trades are struggling to find competent young guys to replace the aging tradespeople), so no one picks up a hobby like cars really anymore.

Or anything mechanical really. People these days would rather just pay a nominal fee for others to do basic shit to their cars.

All brands that arent super luxury will always offer a manual for their performance cars.
Why do American /o/utists say manuals are dying? The only cars excluding them from the lineup are economy cars. Ford, Mazda, Chevy, Subaru, ect. will always keep manual for their fast cars. Thats all that matters.
>>
>>15107763

They haven't. Quite a few people I know can drive stick since they grew up from the 70s. A lot of shitboxes from the 90s are stick here. Most people choose to drive an automatic because the morning commute to work anywhere in Houston is guaranteed to be awful.

I even still see a lot of people driving around in their performance cars over the weekend. It's hardly dead, it is just that it is entirely optional now.

>tfw want to buy a manual for my first car
>dad has only bought and driven automatics for the past 30 years and would probably crash if he tried to teach me shifting

Real talk m8s I need someone to recommend a book or something so I can learn
>>

>you can't be into driving cars and prefer automatic

Just do it, i bought a v6 2011 mustang and i learned to drive it in less than an hour just following youtube videos and shit.
>>
I would want to learn manual, but for like, a weekend car or something. I live in NY, so even for the outer boroughs, a manual is not fun for commuter traffic.

I also have no way of learning it without first buying a manual car, but I want an auto for commuting...

some day though, I'll get around to learning manual.

I would say that the other anons saying itt are right, Manual is making something of a comeback with millennials, possibly because of memes. (OH LOOK AT ME IM A HRADCORE DRIVER I HAVE A MANUAL, etc)

>3 to 5 seconds to get back into first

Dude what. Are you mentally handicapped? Do you have nubs where your hands should be? Literally its the same amount of time it takes to get an auto moving, and I'm not even good.

Personally, I'd rather not have my car drive me. I'd rather drive it. It's like the fear of AI guys. It's going to happen

He probably tries to creep along bumper to bumper because he lives in a city of lane switching assholes

In civilized areas, you can maintain a good following distance in first and actually not block intersections without a brotruck trying to get into the apparent "fast lane"
>>
>>15108278

look, I found the guy who cant drive stick
>>
>>15123824
Braking against engine power is really counter-intuitive to somebody who's always driven manuals.
>>
>>15107798
it becomes 2nd nature and like a lot of people are saying you dont really think about it

>car is manual
>feels luxurious still
>drive over retards like you

Lol look at this pleb thread. I bet you all still masturbate manually too.
>>

>Nothing luxury about driving a manual
Says who? It's almost exactly the same. It's literally a matter of preference you fucking moron.
