Good ones do detect active radars fairly reliably, but are still semi-useless against handheld ones and utterly useless against two-point ones that calculate your average speed over a stretch of the road.

They're useful in warning you if radar is being used on OTHER cars. If you are the only car on the road, it is too late when the detector chirps at you. Some stores use radar detectors to detect burglars because infrared and ultrasonics are not reliable enough due to DOS spoofing tactics (week after week) by the more determined burglars. Those radar emitters are in the same range and can set of your detector. It's like that in my area where a home depot is near the road and its emitters have enough signal splash to get over to the roadway.
My state has lots of roadway emitters to check for HOV and toll lane usage passes at so many places your detector is useless due to that because it would basically beep all the time. Our state has speed detector loops embedded in the roadway and cameras but so far has not automated speeding tickets on the state-only freeways. Technology keeps marching forward. Maybe one day, speeding tickets will be automated by gov't mandated location tracking software in your car.

Pictures and scans of the car, plates, people, and does photo recognition & database checks verifying each car is authorized. My RIID employee badge is scanned (badge scanners all over the property can track movements outdoors and indoors). Automation is good and is seamless a lot of times so that you never need to be questioned by the guard but just drive right in and the gate opens automatically if the computer sees you have the correct number of passengers matching badges and faces match up to badges. Yes, it can detect unauthorized people in the car since it is a multimode system. Employees said they didn't like being stopped by guards and the company responded with this transparent seamlessly nice method.

No cop in the world is going to give six shits from sunday if you speed 8 mph over the speed limit on a fucking highway. It is speeding, but you are simply justifying your speeding as being "okay" because lots of other people do it. I have heard that type of logic used in other situations too.
On one local stretch of freeway, most people (about 60 percent) speed. Usually there are one or two highway patrol cars there giving out tickets all day long. That small stretch of freeway generates several million dollars per year of fines. It's not like they sincerely want to fine people (even tho the money is good). If the speed trap is going, they often (but not always) put one of those flourescent red flags on one of the speed limit signs going into that stretch of freeway warning the drivers that "We Are Here On This Stretch Today so please drive legally".

Radar has gotten A LOT better but it is still pretty dodgy at distance, of course cops rectify that by hiding and you can still easily get caught with your pants down by it. In all if you regularly drive like a fucking demon, drive police ridden routes, and get tickets on a regular basis then it is probably worth the money.
But honestly if you keep it within 10MPH over 90% of cops won't mess with it unless there is something else sketchy that they see or feel, even if you see one and it's too late if you tone it down fairly quick you've still got a good chance of being let go.

Where I used to live, there was a 50 to 70k zone with a 800m straight (no intersections, no driveways, no crests, literally the worlds flattest and most visible stretch) before you hit the 70 sign, guaranteed someone pulled over there every day. Over the years, that 70 sign would get further away depending on how clued up people got for the season. For about 4 months, there were roadworks 30 signs on the stretch and corner for no reason. No roadworks.
Similarly, there's a long stretch of open road and twisties that immediately turns to a 50 at the beginning of a 1km stretch with the same lack of obstacles as the above. It's not a black area, but there is ALWAYS a mobile speed camera van snucked into a bush somewhere along it.
Then there's the targetting poor people on the way to and from work on the south side, I've been stopped 6 times on the way to work once in a 'courtesy' car that didn't look terribly roadworthy, but it was all legit.
Sometimes I feel bad for the cops, doing their jobs like that. Blatantly preying on the poor and least dangerous roads for revenue.

That's just some random pic I saved from /o/ a long while back. Some dude was hit by a drunk driver on a blind turn and flipped or something. I'm not a fan of wranglers myself. We were in a Mazda 6, person that hit us was in an old Camaro of some sort. Other driver died on impact, my mother and friend did as well, my fiancé a few days later in the hospital. I was kept in a medical 'coma' for a week while they tried to reduce the swelling in my brain. Woke up and had no recollection, had to be told that everyone was dead.
Didn't take pics because I was unconscious. Never went to the yard to see the car, too afraid to see the blood stains. Spent a long time learning to walk again on a rebuilt left leg. On disability for the rest of my life, living half out of a bottle of drink each week.
All of this could have been avoided by someone not speeding, radar detector or not.

Yes they will save you about 95% of the time. But occassionally a guy will be shooting laser and you won't catch it. And if you got used to speeding you'll be caught one day doing 105 in a 60 and get your license taken away.
One other point: Make absolutely sure it is hidden under the dash. If you do ever get pulled over and the police officer sees it, he will make absolutely sure you are punished to the full extent of the law.
