They really don't look particularly alike. Their common elements are common to loads of cars.
As far as the front end goes, the XJ's headlights are much more drawn back and the whole impression is much swoopier, while the Conti' it much more upright and masculine. The Conti's greenhouse and also much more upright, and the back ends are totally different (the XJ swoopy and coupish' with a giant rear overhand, while the Lincoln is squared off with a short rear overhang)
