Friend of a friend has a high flowed RB25 turbo that he's willing to straight swap me, so I'm going to do that. Should be a perfect fit.
RE Haltech, they pass emissions laws whereas a nistune won't. I can also get a reasonable deal on them, it's tuneable til the cows come home, and it's just generally a better ECU.

Haha I had a highflow 25 at one stage. Was still way too laggy. Running a kando TD05 18G at the moment and it goes noice on the 20. One day when the kando blows up I'll go a gtx series, already have all the supporting mods there for big power but I need to keep it streetable for now.
No ECU's are legal in SA so I just went value for money and something stealthy looking. Haltech's are generally run by the more serious guys who need the super fine tuning for big power, but nistune would run your turbo fine regardless.

The box has been rebuilt within the last few thousand km but yeah it's still a 20 box.
If I was going to do motorsport with it, it'd be a Snowy Mountains 1000 sort of top speed thing. It's too clean to properly slide and box is too weak to drag.

35-40s are fine on the RB26, but the 20's just a bit too peaky in the torque range anyway to flow enough gas to make it usable for much more than a track-day screamer- even then you gotta squeeze its nuts all the time.
In hindsight, if the 20's where born about 25years later with VVT, they'd actually be a really nasty with a twin-scroll on them

The housing is just too big for anything short of a drag car. A friend has a 3582 on his RB26 and even it is a little laggy, and that's with a way smaller rear housing.
The Falcon turbo itself is fucked up, only a 3" inlet as well. No idea why they specced it in such a weird way. It's aids.

RB20's would be noice with twin scroll. Mines pretty punchy, haven't met too many cars quicker yet, and it takes a good thrashing without any complaints. Cannot kill it, 21 psi on std internals with god knows how many kms and still starts no dramas everytime.

Its a production tubbo so they do cut corners in some areas for space/cost, that said they're not actually too bad for a stock turbo really. I know they stuck the 35-82s on some later XR6's but don't know their exact flow rates off the top of my head, but a few of them do hold some fucking crazy levels of boost. Well they do for a while anyway as much as anything with 40psi shoved in its hole.
