Is car lift necessary if you want to work on your car in your own garage, or is just mainly to make things easier? How much can youdo with just jack and stands?
You can do almost everything without a lift.
If you own a 911 then you almost need a lift though.
You can do literally everything with a jack and stands. A lift does make things a hell of a lot easier though. I have changed tramsmissions in a driveway with just a jack.

I happen to have a 911, getting myself either a flush mount BendPak MDS-6KF (pic related) or a MD-6XP, a portable version of their mid-rise lift.
