Is there anything I can win at guys? Besides doing a sweet burnout and being louder and cooler?
>>
youre not even cooler

can win at looking like poor white trash
>>
>>15003335
yes, spend the $1499 to get a 350 long block from Jegs or Summit, another $450ish to pickup a 600cfm carb and dual plane intake, swap all accessories and other components right onto the new motor and enjoy an extra 0.7 liters of American freedom.

optional and advised: long tube headers and exhaust for another $350ish. save money on a full exhaust, just go from header collectors to a set of mufflers and dump em to the ground.

$500 and an afternoon

I beat my friends '84 T/A in my Focus. The Civic is faster.
>>
>>15003433
pretty much this.
The 305 is slow trash with no real potential because of its tiny bore.
>>
>>15004537
Sad but true. It's like Chevy didn't get the memo re: Malaise small block
>>
>>15004572
what I've never been able to understand is why they even bothered with the 305 to start with. They needed a smaller small block for emissions, but they didn't want to use the 283 and wanted something closely related to the 350. Fair enough. But why didn't they just use a detuned 302? They made a glorious 302 from 1967-1969 specifically to homologate the Camaro Z28 for Trans Am racing. It had a 350 block and a 283 crankshaft. Surely putting shit heads, exhaust and carb on it would detune it enough to meet emissions. No. They had to make a whole new block for the 305 with a tiny bore, but the stroke of a 350.

Just does not make sense to me. Surely it would've been cheaper to make a detuned 302 than to make the 305?

305 is the most underrated engine of all time I think

you can easily get a 13 second 305 for less than >>15003433

all the people who discredit are just parrots
>>
>>15003335
pull out that heavy inefficent V8
and go with somthing lighter like a 4 or 6 cyl

you would definitly be a head turner at any car show if that thing had an SR20 or even a BMW engine

I'm planning on selling it and buying this camaro with a built and cammed 350 in it, basically everything that guy a few posts up said to do is already done on the camaro. Also planning on going to the stealer ship and buying a midsized pickup as my DD because I've been daily driving force bodies for too long and it's super impractical for work and being married

Also apparently the fastest trans am ever built was a 6 cylinder twin turbo
>>
>>15004721
You're preaching to the choir, Man. That combined with the fact that the 350 was never mated with a manual transmission is why I ended up buying a fox even though I thought f-bodies looked cooler when I was a kid. I don't usually betray my younger self like that but I think I could make him understand if I explained it to him.

It's fwd, you'll win easy.

Until you get up around 400 hp that shit doesn't matter. On the other hand the TA is a lot heavier. He could just run him off the road.
>>
>>15003335
you can win at skids
>>
>>15004825
For the time and money you'll spend custom fabricating a nip or euro engine to run in there, you could build the 305 and/or just throw forced induction at it and be faster.
>>
Alright, let's get semi-serious here.

What's the Civic's ET and mph in the 1/4? This way we'll know what the power target will need to be.
>>
>>15004825
The only 4 cylinder you could get in there easily is the GM Iron Duke, but at 90 HP, it's not something you want.

The V6 would have to be one of GM's 60* V6's, the 2.8/3.1/3.4/3400/3500

Pic related. A 3.4L DOHC LQ1 swapped into a turd gen. To my knowledge, the swap was never completed because reasons, but getting it in is the easy part using Firebird V6 mounts. The LQ1 is a special snowflake engine though. But even bone stock, the 215 HP LQ1 makes more power than the 305
>>
>>15003335
I feel you man I just sold my Elco with a 305. Shits not fun. Especially in California
>>
>>15003335
You can take your Hispanic ass back across the border. If you convinced about 50 of your illegal, border jumping friends to come with you it would be a win for every American tax payer.
>>
>>15004721
The 305 itself was primarily a cost and emissions-driven solution when it was introduced in the 70's. The smaller bore makes for a more efficient burn by reducing the amount of time required for complete combustion while also using a common crank between it and the 350. The 302 would have required more work to hit the emissions target while also requiring two cranks to be manufactured.

Why the 305 was used in an F-body at all is again cost, followed by arrogance and apathy. Yes, they should have done a 302 for it but the 305 was already there, and besides they were GM they knew best what customers wanted whether the customers liked it or not
>>
>>15003335
>305
no, you're rekt
>>
>>15004825
At that point just LS meme swap it up and boost it. This is one of the cars where an LS swap is actually relatively simple because of the excellent aftermarket support
>>
>>15005158
So basically the 305 was like the 4 banger that came in the fox, cheaper with better fuel economy but unlike the fox's 4, it was just as heavy as the big engine and they never ousted factory forced induction on it.

God 305 a shit and I just know that still right this very second there are kids buying them because v8 sports car I feel so bad for them.
>>
>>15005181
Can't turbo pinto motors be pretty serious?
>>
>>15005192
yes, unlike the 305.
>>
>>15005192
Eh. They'll do ok up to about 300hp or so. After that the cost/benefit ratio starts going all wonky and it isn't really worth it unless you're out to make some sort of point.
>>
>>15005220
A 300hp Pinto is fun and cheap though. A 300hp 305 F Body is more expensive and still less fun.
>>
>>15005181
Well, consider that in the context of the time it wasn't a terrible choice since the N/A fours were all less than 100hp and an F-body is a fairly large car. As previously noted there was the 2.5L Iron Duke that had all the sophistication of a cement mixer available early on but take rates were rightfully very low

From C/D test:
0-60: 6.8
1/4 mile:
15.3 sec @ 94 mph

Shit, I thought this thing could be too quick for an early F-body but seems to be in range. Couldn't quickly find the test itself but several references to what's presumably an 1984 L69 305 T/A running a 7.9 0-60 and a 16.1 quarter mile. Hell, those are close enough that a win might only hinge on the driver.

If it was a LB9 MM5 G92 or a LB9 MM5 R6P Formula from 1987-1992 it would be good.

>>
>>15004803
lmao you have no idea what you're saying. The 305's tiny bore size leads to tiny combustion chambers and with tiny valves. It's an asthmatic engine and always will be. By the time you get 250hp at the crank you could have 400 to the wheels with a 350.
>>
305 is a boat anchor.

go to local pick a part
look at late 90's chevy trucks
look at their vortec 350s
pull engine pay less than 400$
drop engine in firebird with edelbrock intake and carb
this is a gm product, don't bother wasting money on new parts, good used parts are everywhere for cheap

google vortec 350 junkyard build
easiest 400hp build possible
