I went through a 3 pound pack of electrodes then went onto MIG and used about half a spool.

Holy shit. Just... what the fuck dude. I said I had seen worse, but you might want to watch some welding tutorials. I'm not trying to be a dick, so I apologize if I come off that way, but 10th graders in shop class know when they are fucking up. You have to make adjustments along the way.

Actually, I find this all rather amusing. The process went something like this
>weld
>burn hole
>fill weld
>burn another hole
>fill weld my fill weld
>burn another hole
>fill weld the fill weld that I just fill welded
>burn another hole
>fill weld the fill weld that was fill welded after fill welding
>etc.
Eventually I came full circle with both the stick and mig, alternating in between, before I got to a spot I could weld without burning through.
It was all a learning experience.
