>>14977350
They WERE going to put the Copperhead into production. It was going to slot above the Plymouth Prowler and below the Viper.
So what happened? The Copperhead had the misfortune of being shown off around the time Bob Eaton sold Chrysler to Daimler. Mercedes/Daimler saw the Copperhead as a legitimate threat to the Mercedes-Benz SL and promptly killed it. When the engineers argued over it, mercedes gave them an SLK and said "Make a Chrysler or something out of that."
And that became the Chrysler Crossfire, named for the internal battle of Chrysler engineers vs Daimler beancounters and execs.
>>14977920
Fucking Benz ruined everything. The ME412 for example was killed because benz git scared out of their minds. How could America make a supercar better than theirs?
I'd rather have Chrysler spend its last days pumping out mentally insane cars like copperheads, vipers, demons and the ME412.
>>14977930
>Copperheas
>Demon
>ME412
all killed to protect Mercedes-Benz.
This is like when GM killed off shit like the Pontiac Banshee to protect the Corvette, but on a worse scale. Mercedes basically said "You're not allowed to have any fun"
>>14977930
Speaking of which. You can really see how paranoid Daimler was. Take a look at the Plymouth Prowler for example. It was put into production in 1997, before the Daimler buyout.
no 1998 model year Prowler. They were worried it would battle the SLK. It went back into production in 1999 when they noticed everything was already in place for it and the car hadn't paid for itself yet. When it did finally pay for itself (2001), they ended production.
>>14977944
How about the 4 door "Corvette" Charger?
>>14977970
That would've gone into production using a slightly modified LH platform. The LH platform was designed with the possibility of an FR car in mind, hence the longitudinal FF setup of all the LH cars.
Look closely and you'll see a LOT of similarity between the 1988 Lamborghini Portofino concept that became the LH cars, and the 1999 Dodge Charger concept car.

To show off what the company is capable of
To test new ideas
To test the public's reaction
Making a single eye catching million dollar concept vehicle is cheaper than spending a billion dollars to put a vehicle into production that then flops.
Example: The Chevrolet SSR.

>>14980494
It was gonna be a Corvette killer. Ironically, concepts like the Banshee are why the F-body twins even exist (instead of being just the Camaro)- Pontiac wanted to make a sports car forever and GM wouldn't let them, eventually giving them a Camaro and telling them to make their own body for it, because that's all they were gonna get.

Could have been an "affordable" supercar. Also could have been one of the fastest cars of its time while being cheaper than the Mercs that were probably half as fast.
And that was the reason merc killed it, got too scared of all the insane shit Chrysler started pumping out, thinking that they might endanger mercs US sales or even worldwide ones.

Mid engine quad turbo V12 making 850HP aint bad either
>>14981613
Not worth getting unless they contact McLaren for engine design again. GNX needs to return
>>14988517
It was ASC Mclaren. not the McLaren known for supercars. ASC McLaren is an American coach-building company. They didn't design the GNX engine, just added a few bits
And why would they need to step in anyways? GM already has a suitable engine in the 3.6L twin turbo V6 that would work just fine in a GNX or Grand National.
>>14988767
it needs to be faster than the corvette in a straight line using only a turbo 6.
>>14988774
again. The Twin Turbo V6 is perfectly fine. It's already available with anywhere between 400 and 450 HP. The chassis just needs to be light enough.

What is exactly preventing of making the ME412 now?
Fiat has the ferraris under its belt, but I really doubt it would compete against even if it was faster since Ferraris sell on brand name alone
>>14989021
>What is exactly preventing of making the ME412 now?
Fiat. Just like GM used to have a rule that nothing could be faster than the Corvette, Fiat has a similar rule that nothing can be faster than a Ferrari.
>>14989050
the Viper hit that wall recently, too.
so when it came time to update the foxbody mustang, Ford rolled out 3 prototype designs. the Rambo, Bruce Jenner, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
the Jenner was ultimately seen as just too bland and plain and the Rambo as too aggressive. The Schwarzenegger would eventually with some tweaking, form the basis of the 90's Foxbodies.
that said, despite rejecting the Bruce Jenner prototype design, the Mustang would continue to have tranny problems

>>14977853
I think I like it. It would be more practical to look at if it was a motor home.
>>14991126
>designer
Yeah, draw one like that, pass it over to the engineers and they'll laugh you out the room or scrawl dicks all over it.
>pedestrian safety nonexistent
>pillars so thin it'll immediately flatten itself and the occupants into a red gruel if it flips over on the roof
>cargo hatch in the rear so far up off the ground you'd have to fucking overhead military press your luggage to get it up past the rear lights
>three acres worth of glass at the back- but at such an angle that maybe half a foot of vertical window height results out of the giant glass expenditure
It's literally car concept design 101- make an unrealistic and horrendously impractical piece of shit that looks pretty and then have fanboys moan that the production car wasn't as 'cool' as the concept drawing promised.

>>14980507
Chrysler has some genuinely cool history, and places like allpar are pretty interesting.
From just how badly Daimler fucked them over to how cool some of their old style stuff was (story of engineers getting to override management decisions because their design of suspension was necessary for something and doing it another way would sacrifice handling too much.) to things like how they actually did the first electronic fuel injection that was not only multiport but also a full analog electronic computer, and this was at the same time fuelie corvettes were new.
>On topic
Onyx concept car, because the first material that comes to mind for a car body is copper. It's a toss up between that and making a car from blued steel body panels though as to what might be the most amazing look.

>>14991139
Not him but I work at a development department in one of the American car manufacture.
Yes, designers do have to compromise a lot on their original designs to get the car comply to various factors such as that you've mentioned. We often do get dumbfounded by looking at the initial idea sketches and the final concept/production sketch. Obviously the initial sketches looks the most glamorous and I cannot deny that.
We all do our jobs as directed by our higher members of the company and sometimes the CEO directly comes to us and orders us.
Safety is what we consider first and we don't compromise it for aesthetics.
Designers and engineers like us work together towards the development of a car. I hope you got my point on track.

Banshee was a name Pontiac used for a number of concept cars. You got the Firebird period due to the Banshee- GM wouldn't let them make the original concept sports car back in the 60's so they told them to make their own version of the Camaro instead.
