That's stupid as fuck, every car from this era that hasn't been spot on maintained, stored during winter and have an engine with high mileage is going to have problems here and there (Or a shitload depending on the owner). I don't know why you were surprised by anything else.
It's easy, go there, try it out and see for yourself. If you buy a car up front without even having it inspected and without test driving it, you are a legit idiot and that goes for ANY car that you are buying from a private owner even the recent ones.
I wanted to buy a first gen MR2 a few years ago, the car looked top notch in photos, but trying it revealed that it required a lot of work on it, something the guy had ommited to mention in his ad because he wanted to sell it fast and expected someone to just buy it. He put a LOT on pressure on me to buy it, but I ended up not buying because the cost for repairs exceeded my budget by a long shot.
But yeah, don't ever expect to buy any recreative vehicle without having to put some work into it eventually. Sports cars are toys and even if they are very reliable, they tend to fail in certain places. So if you don't know at least the minimum on how to work on cars or don't know people who can do it for you for relatively cheap, don't even buy an old sports car and get yourself a daily with a bit of punch instead.
Face it, there are people who just don't have it in them to own genuine sports. You're not buying a reliable machine, you're buying a toy. Accept this fact.

I dded a 87 aw11 for about two years until I passed it up for an sti. I'd say to make sure hoses aren't rotted and make sure you know how to properly do a coolant flush since the previous owner probably didn't. The ebrake does tend to fade after a while due to rust but I just lived without it. 5th gear tends to grind the higher the mileage is so be wary of that since it does make highway driving a pain. Other than that be prepared to encounter cramped bolts everywhere and as a result cut yourself on some rusted pos since these things tend to rust quick and badly.
