What does /o/ think of BMW 128i? Was thinking about picking up a used one for $20k or so. I like that they're relatively small, the inline-6 sounds appealing, and the interior is refreshingly basic and driver-focused.

As far as BMW's go, how reliable are these? I'm thinking probably less issues than the turbo 135 at least?

Fun to drive?

Youre getting royally fucked. That is 135i with 60k miles territory. Buy the 135i and just make sure the turbos were replaced under warranty if it is one of the bad years.

The one I was looking at had really low miles.

Which years are bad?
>>
And what is a "non-fucked" price for 128i?
>>
>>14909635
Far, far less. Use cargurus.com to see what they are actually worth.

2008-2010 N54 had the wastegate rattle i believe. Check the forums. Regardless they should be warrantied for 8 years, 82k miles.

Ah, good to know. The 128 I was looking at is a 2013.
>>
>>14909730
If its that new that isnt a horrendous price but do remember the 128i will depreciate hard. It isnt as desireable as a manual 135i. Also since you arent povery stricken cargurus is the only place id look for cars. Great site, free for private listings, autotrader is dead and craigslist is kinda scummy at this price range besides being 90% dealer spam.

I assume the car us a CPO!

*?

Also huge fan of the 1 series, was debating between that and the M Roadster i finally got. Both great tiny BMWs. New M2 has me super stoked.

>It isnt as desireable as a manual 135i

Is the base 128i still fun to drive? I heard 0-60 is something like 6 seconds.
>>
op i am a bmw tech and have driven both quite a few times. the 128i feels really fucking slow compared to the 135i so if thats your primary concern i really wouldnt recommend the 128i. the 128i's engine (n52) is actually quite reliable and smooth as compared to the n54, and the noticeable lag of the later n55 due to only having a single turbo. both are still sporty, both are fun to drive, except the 135i is MUCH more fun opposed to the 128i being much cheaper.

The official number from BMW is 6.4sec 0-60 with a manual, and judging by BMW times versus magazine tests that would be a 6.2 sec 0-60.

It is fun to drive? Well that depends on if you think any car with a 0-60 more than 5 seconds is slow. My M does 4.6, and the 135i with a little bit of money will destroy that. Really depends on what you want in a car. 128i is a nice car, but for me, I always choose the fastest model available as I'm a speed junky. But it is still a fun car, I would highly recommend getting one with the sport package.

pretty much what this guy says

ALWAYS GET THE SPORT PACKAGE

>>14910845
Good info. How much is it to replace/fix the turbos on a 135i? Just kinda worried about how reliable it is compared to the 128.
>>
>>14910895
no clue off the top of my head, theyre still good engines dont get me wrong. n/a engines will always be more reliable
>>
>>14909564
If it hasn't been mentioned already, the 128i is a four cylinder (albeit turbo), not a six cylinder. You'd be after the 130i if it had to be a six.
Regardless, I'd still imagine it to be an entertaining little car.

>>14910959
please disregard everything this guy said

>>14910959
fucking idiot.
>>14910895
Hit the forums. If you live in the US the turbos should be warrantied for a while.

Coming from the one with an oxygen starved brain, that's rich.

It is. Just a relatively low-powered six. Very smooth though.
