What the fuck is an active bonnet? My bonnet is supposed to stay closed when I want it to and stay open when I want it to, not be active.
>>
You know how people on this board like old Japanese cars and refuse to buy new cars?

Now imagine if you had a lot of money and were that much of a samefag, but didn't want to buy a used car.

If they sold stock AE86s, they'd sell. If they sold stock RX-7s, they'd sell. Cars always have have a market, and especially Japanese conservative businessmen would buy into this.

If they sold the dictator Mercedes still, people would buy it.

Centuries are custom made to the order of the customer. That's just a baseline car. Literally anything you want will be put in it.

When you get above a hundred grand and start paying other people to drive you, the features of the car itself start to matter less. Then you start thinking about the looks of the car, seats, media players, and so on.

>cloth seats
The "cloth" fabric in the Toyota Century is not the same renewable nasty polyester shit found in your Tata Nano, but actually sublime quality 100% wool which feels far more comfy and luxurious to the touch than cheap slippery leather in modern pricey cars.

It was adopted to keep your perfectly tailored suits from getting worn out and wrinkled while spending a lot of time in one of the Japanese presidential saloons.

>>14907854
Most applications like this involve small explosives that act on the bonnet hinge. Until you replace the hinge, you're gonna have an SRS light stuck on your dash and likely won't be able to properly close the bonnet.

I'd like to know if idiot pedestrians - drunkards who walk out in front of cars for no good reason - can be sued for the damage they cause to cars with these systems.

The cloth seats are a cultural thing and a scientific marvel, the interior doesn't need to be updated, its already luxurious and just because something looks new and exciting doesn't automatically make it better. The V-12 is there because you can set it up to run in such a way that it is practically silent but still has enough pull to move your car, because it is smooth as fuck, and because it is extremely expensive to maintain. And I'm sorry to break it to you, anon, but xenon headlights, active avoidance technology, and touchscreens as every surface are nothing but extremely expensive memes that do nothing to make the car better, but are not quite expensive enough to exude an air of exclusivity.

other than you forget that one is a top market luxury sedan for people of prestige and power. It was never intended to be flashy or gaudy, but to capture the style of the 60's executive cars. It and the President became the gold standard for showing your social status, but still remaining conservative. Importing an American or European executive car would have made you appear to be new money, a try-hard. It would potentially have the opposite effect of what you want to show.

The other is a mid tier boring sedan old white people buy, then sell to young black men when the airsprings leak because they don't wish to pay 1600 bucks for new springs and air compressor.

Here, this video was made about Trabant production in 1990, just after VW took over the East German factories after the fall of the wall and mere months before they died an inglorious death on the free market. The centuries interior has been updated several times over the years.

The seats were never cloth they've been suede.

Suspension and engine have been updated

And the car is still used for many government higherups and royalty.

Sure I will agree its missing a lot of safety gizmos, but I think their viewpoint is that the driver is your crash prevention. Because its not a car you're supposed to drive yourself.

probably rich Japanese executives or important political figures.

a really important person with his own driver doesn't need all the extra 2 million little tiddly electronic bits in an S class, they are just there to get there from point A to B in comfort. and since it costs so much it is obviously a status symbol as well.

It's amazing that Toyota hasn't been able to transition all the Crown and Century customers over to Lexus LS customers in their own homeland. But maybe that's due in part because Toyota knew from the start that the Century wouldn't cut in in the States and created Lexus exclusively for Americans that like gadgets and gizmos.

Perhaps this will change now that Toyota made Lexus a global brand in 2007.

>the same as a purpose built component developed for one purpose that uses high refresh rate rate radar to read and interpret hand gestures using software made by the same people who made the hardware

I don't even think this hand flailing maestro shit is even that ground breaking of a feature but for fucks sake Edison didn't think the phonograph was that important of an invention, resigning it to be used as a device to record the last thoughts of the dying.
>>
>>14919760
C'mon, really?
Look at voice control for example. It's common, and very well documented, that voice control in cars doesn't work well. Even in very expensive S Class mercs it works only for the simplest of things and only if you have good diction and an american accent.

>>14919781

Electric water pumps and electric motors have much higher efficiency and service lifetime than engine driven water pumps. Electric motors only fail if they have shit bearings or brushes, only one of these things is exclusive to electric motors.

The solid state control boards won't fail unless you get really retarded and park your car in some lava or something.
>>
>>14919898

Both are electronic features that require some sort of analog interaction with the driver, whether through voice or hand movement, and both can be hard to work with because of software issues. It's simple to understand really.

The pricing can be entirely justifiable though.
All the ornaments and final touches are carefully hand crafted by Toyota's master builders which there are only four in the company at the moment.

Also one of the most important purposes of still having this fossil of a car in their domestic lineup is not make a profit (actually it's hardly profitable as the V12 engine exclusively developed for the model is extraordinarily expensive to build), but to have the godlike skills and honor of top ranked artisans keep inherited within Toyota for centuries.

>>
>>14907756
OP, I'm guessing you were just rambling off of an S-class sales brochure there, but if you need that many safety features in car you need to take the bus.

"MAGIC VISION CONTROL wipers"? The fuck? What the hell does that do, pipe LSD in through the air vents every time you turn the wipers on?

Obviously this car is not aimed at a large audience. It's the same way manufacturers like Bristol are still around.

There are a handful of moneyed people who prefer a simpler take on a luxury car like this and will pay to do so.

Plus it's Japan's sort of dignitary vehicle of choice so I imagine it holds a cult status there as a symbol of opulence and social standing.

And for that matter, it's probably still a halo car for Toyota over there. Remember, brands like Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, etc. are a North American thing. In Japan they utilize different dealerships but market all their cars under one larger brand so Toyota does manufacture and sell higher end vehicles unlike here in the U.S. where they're all badged as Lexus.

And for what it's worth, when you haven't done any R&D work in twenty plus years you aren't swallowing all the car's profit (whatever there is to be had) up in overhead expenses.

Because motoring journalists, most of whom are known to be bribed by German auto makers and wheel suppliers, have successfully brainwashed self-proclaimed car enthusiasts like retarded ones on /o/ into believing that if you are a true car guy you must appreciate costly big-footed cars with a spine-crashing harsh ride such as recent Audis and BMWs.
