My Mercedes has the DIRECT SHIFT stalk. I can see how it's a bit ambiguous if you don't know what you are doing. However, if you turn the car off, and open the drivers door, it automatically selects P. Why the hell would FCA not have logic like this?

It probably won't do it above around 2 or 3 mph. That would rape the parking pawl if it engaged it any faster, and could cause the car to start skidding and crash if it does it at speed.
