E46 is more powerful and better overall, but is more labor intensive to maintain.
E36 is slower, and easier to fix.

Ive drove an e36 328i for five years, real nice solid car, not toyubaru slow, still classy looking. Never had an issue. Everyone ive known with an e30 or e46 have not been so lucky. Newer BMWs e8X, e9X are much more reliable imo. That said im looking at picking up an e46 simply because there are no good e36s left. If you find a nice low mileage one, buy it.
