Honestly I wouldn't mind driving a classic Beetle, but not any of the recent ones. I'm not even the kind of person that's normally shy to drive a "chick car" I've driven a few Miatas and absolutely loved it, but I don't think I could drive any of the newer Beetles without feeling super embarrassed. It's just a step too far for me.

Yes and no. The Beetle RSI came out before the R32 was launched anywhere and the 3.2L VR6 was made for it to start with. It was the first car to get the 3.2L variant. This is before getting into all the shit the RSI had that the R32 didn't like the carbon fiber everywhere.
The Super Beetle concept car was built using a normal 2012 American market Beetle Turbo. They used a MK6 Golf R as a parts car, yes, but the engine is still the same one the bug came with, just tuned a bit. They welded in the Golf's trunk-pan which is the only part of the floorpan that requires any modification, bolted in the Golf's gas tank, rear suspension and transmission and had a custom driveshaft made (required due to the length of it). Then they used the engine sub-frame from an Audi TT-RS because the one from the Golf wouldn't fit. The build of that entire project is online.
