the 08 was particularly bad but all KLRs have the potential for oil burning. mine was bad enough until I did the 685 kit that I never changed the oil since it was always fresh lol. the suspension can be fixed with a fork swap from EMIG racing and ohlins rear shock but by the time you put that much money in it you could've gotten a much better machine stock. the charm in these bikes though is their rugged invincibility. LOCTITE EVERY BOLT YOU INSTALL. they will vibrate out.

When I was pulling the old motor out of my DR, I discovered that every bolt on the bike had blue locktite on it. I also discovered that there were several bolts missing, all ones that I'd taken off and had put back on without locktite.

i test rode a monster 821 last year before buying my striple rx. it's a hoot of a bike to ride and definitely delivers more giggles around town, but it isn't as capable in the twisty shit and lacks in suspension so it's not as well suited for track days.
if you only ride around town tho, definitely look to pick up a used one in a few years.
