Are these good daily drivers?
I just need something cheap, fuel efficient, reliable, practical and will last forever.
These are popular in Japan apparently.
Just get a Civic

Civics are considerably pricier and are less practical

Well they are made in japan by toyota...alot or all of them are shipped here not sure if they have a plant here for scion yet.
if youre looking for something new, prepare for dull driving and cheap interiors, but any of them will do, personally i prefer honda.... mazda is growing on me.
if youre looking for a used car, a civic(si) is pretty much perfect., if you dont care about driving then get a prius.
I had one. They're cheap all right, but that applies to the interior as well, bunch of plastic everywhere.
In terms of fuel economy, mine got around 30 around town and 36 on the highway. In terms of reliability they're toyota/10, and in 2008 they were rated as one of the most reliable cars produced that year.
It'll do what you need it to do, anything more and you might want to do more shopping.

Since they killed the brand off earlier this year, I suspect they really don't

That's all I need it to do. Be reliable and last for another 10 years. How's the ride? Highway? Acceleration?

i see, wasn't sure about the fr-s..

I had mine in a stick, so the clutch was easy and I could get it up to 60 in about 8 seconds. Its a corolla engine so I guess its to be expected. The ride is bumpier since its a little smaller, but otherwise is unoffending.
Going highway speeds (70-80 mph), my rpm stayed in the neighborhood of 3k at my highest gear, which isn't fantastic. It would make for a decent commuter car otherwise.
